My long-gestating Kolchak miniseries for Moonstone has just been announced by the publisher over on their forums. It's scheduled to debut in March of '08. The art by Tim Hamilton is incredible, and Dave Akins' covers are pretty awesome, too. Here's the solicitation copy:

KOLCHAK TALES: NIGHT STALKER OF THE LIVING DEAD 1 (of 3)32 pages, color, $3.99Written by: Christopher MillsArt by: Tim HamiltonZOMBIES! Everybody hates them. But that appears to be exactly what Carl Kolchak finds to be stalking among the cornstalks in the small heartland town of Georges Corner, Nebraska. The simple task of covering just another festival pageant takes a dark turn... as it so often does in Kolchak's world... when people start disappearing, and the dead start walking! Watch out... they bite!Covers by Twilight Creation's board game "Zombies" artist Dave Akins!

Also scheduled for March is Moonstone's latest pulp fiction anthology, which also includes a new short story by yours truly:

In the roaring heart of the crucible, steel is made. In the raging flame of personal tragedy, men are sometimes forged into something more than human.Wealthy and successful at an early age, Richard Benson was preparing to enjoy a long and happy life with his family when crime took away his wife and young daughter.

Once he was just a man, but now he is a machine of vengeance dedicated to the extermination of all crime. A figure of ice and steel, but more pitiless than both, Benson has become a symbol to crooks and killers--a terrible, almost impersonal force, masking cold genius and a nearly supernatural power behind a face as white and still as a dead man's mask. Only pale eyes, like ice in a polar dawn, hint at what awaits criminals when they invoke the rage of millionaire adventurer Richard Benson -- The Avenger!

Now, for the first time in over 30 years, the fearless/expressionless crime fighter; the man with the moldable face, the man with the shock white hair and the pale grey eyes, is back in action in a stunning collection of stories featuring all the action, adventure, and revenge Avenger fans have come to expect! From noir adventure and two-fisted action, to emotional tales of inner demons, join The Avenger for an E-ticket thrill ride!

Develop an attitude of richness over riches, of swankness, suaveness and strangeness to set yourself apart from the horde of uniformity. This is a paraphrase of the First Manifesto of the Cocktail Nation, as written by the Millionaire of the lounge music group, Combustible Edison.

Find or create the proper lounge atmosphere. Set up an overall theme, such as Polynesia or outer space, while blocking out the outside world by covering windows and removing inside clocks. Enhance this theme through undulating drapes and sensuous textures, such as silk or velour throw pillows.

Place yourself and your fellow listeners in close proximity to one another, so you can carry on conversations. You want to schmooze as much as you swing.

Eat and drink only what you can carry in your hands. Food items should take the form of canapes and appetizers, while drinks should be some form of cocktail. When you do go for a full meal, make it a steak and Scotch.

Dress the part. Men should wear polyester or sharkskin suits and try to copy the style of Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin. Women should wear dresses with tight skirts and try to copy the style of either Jacqueline Kennedy or, at the other extreme, Marilyn Monroe.

Collect the works of several lounge artists, ranging from classic vocalists such as Dean Martin, Bobby Darin and Tony Bennett to bandleaders such as Louis Prima. Include modern groups such as Love Jones, Pink Martini, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and the Brian Setzer Orchestra.

Set the volume at a comfortable level for easy listening. Lounge music isn't about breaking your eardrums, although groups such as Lounge Against The Machine play music that was originally intended to do so.

Listen for an exotic sound with white-bread overtones. While lounge music often has African, Indian or Polynesian rhythms, most of it is recorded by professional American musicians, not by tribesmen, rajahs or island natives. This kind of lounge music is often called exotica.

Look for an absence of the elements of such genres as country, blues, or rock 'n' roll. Lounge music is intended to be free of the elements of most popular music, other than the swinging elements of big band and be-bop jazz.

Some days I am just behind the curve. However, it’s wonderful to come across a writer or singer who is unknown to you, knocks your socks off, and has an extensive cannon of work behind them. The joy of personal discovery is a wonderful thing.

Last night, Sirius Radio was channeling it’s Seriously Sinatra channel through my televison when I heard this female voice, full of smoke and promise, a husky, torchy voice, like Julie London in full seduction mode. I dropped what I was doing to see to whom the voice belonged – Laura Fygi. Who? Never heard of her! Rush to the computer and googlize the name. Found some downloads and listened in pure bliss. This multicultural (Dutch-French), multi-lingual chantuse is amazing!

Her latest CD, Rendez-Vous comes in as a premium import CD with most of the songs both in French and English. What a find!

Fygi - who celebrated her 15th anniversary as a solo singer last year - was born in Amsterdam in 1955 the daughter of a Dutch father and an Egyptian mother, and raised bilingual: her mother spoke French to her and her father Dutch.

Between 1987 and 1991, she was a member of Centerfold, one of the most popular Dutch girl-bands, most likely as much for their voices as for their penchant for dressing in sexy lingerie. They had hits in the Netherlands and all over Europe. In Japan, they were considered famous.
In 1991, the ladies of Centerfold stopped performing and Laura (together with Rowan Moore) started a band called The Backlot. An album was expected from the new group, but instead Mercury Records asked Laura to make a solo album – released as Introducing, produced by Ruud Jacobs. On this album, she was accompanied by famous Belgian musician Jean 'Toots' Thielemans. Most of the songs on the album are jazz.

On Rendez–Vous, her 11th album, she combines her love of the Great American Songbook with the beautiful sounds of her mother tongue. "I just selected my favourite classics and sang them in the most poetic language I know. It's a combination of recognition and emotion."

The collection of songs on Rendez-vous is inspired by the famous Hot Club de France-era, of which Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli are well-known exponents. Hot Club de France was a famous jazz club in Paris in the 1930's, established to protect and promote jazz music. As a result, major international jazz musicians were able to perform in France and many American and European musicians owe their success to the activities of this French organisation. As it was forbidden to sing in English during the war, well-known songs of American composers were translated into French at the time. So, with the exception of 'Caravane', the tracks on Rendez-Vous are all French classics. Fygi asked Philippe Elan, a Frenchman living in the Netherlands, to translate the lyrics of 'Caravane' in French.

The world-famous tracks from Cole Porter, Kurt Weill, Glenn Miller and George Gershwin and others were adapted by Laura's own band. "We started in the summer of 2006 by selecting the repertoire, the rhythms and the soloists we would like to invite. My pianist Hans Vroomans laid the foundation for all the new arrangements after which the rest of my band perfected them. Their involvement is significant for this album; it's the reason why this record is so special," says Laura. Rendez-vous is produced by Ruud Jacobs. Similar to Live At Ronnie Scott's, this album has a truly intimate club vibe. Laura: "I just love that intimacy; the idea that the songs are performed just for you, as if you are the one in front of the stage."

The album features guest performances by David Kweksilber on clarinet, Gert Wantenaar on accordion, Tim Kliphuis on violin and Bert Boeren on trombone. Another remarkable guest is French superstar Dave (born in the Netherlands) with whom Laura performs a stunning version of 'Dansez Maintenant'. "He has been living in France for the last 40 years, so he didn't know who I was. But he said that if Michel Legrand thought I was good enough, he certainly couldn't refuse the offer!" Guitarist Stochelo Rosenberg from the famous Rosenberg Trio contributed his gypsy-sounding guitar solos to 'Nuages' and 'Caravane'.

Rendez-Vous is a wonderful CD of jazzy evergreens sung in French. The album will see a worldwide release on 27 April. Laura Fygi will be touring in Asia , where she has been a true superstar for many years. In the spring of 2008, she will embark on a theatre tour in the Netherlands.

Le Continental
This song immediately sets the tone. It feels like driving a Deux Chevaux through the waving lavender fields of the French countryside, your arm hanging out of the window, enjoying the sunshine.

Le Temps qui passe
This brings back memories of Casablanca, one of my favourite movies. I wasn't too impressed by Humphrey Bogart, but I just adored Ingrid Bergman. This is pure nostalgia.

Divine Beguine
The characteristic features of this song are its drive and differences in pace. Nearly each verse has a different melody and there's no recurring chorus.

Pour Te Plaire
As far as I'm concerned, this is one of the most wonderful songs on the album. It's a romantic tribute to my husband, almost like wedding vows.

C'est Si Bon
A very famous, originally French song! I have been performing it live as a Q&A with the audience. Everybody knows this song!

Originally a French song, just like "C'est Si Bon", but this one has a real gypsy style to it. It's about a departing train and it really feels like you're on that train. It has an amazing guitar solo by Stochelo Rosenberg.

Tout Le Jour, Toute La Nuit
A Cole Porter classic and just a great song!

Volons Vers La Lune
Everybody always records this song in a swing version. I wanted to do it differently, so I recorded a very slow version instead.

Quelqu'un m'aimera
Cheerful, short and uncomplicated, featuring a great solo of my pianist Hans. Very refreshing, especially after "Volant Vers La Lune".

Tu Viens Dans Ma TĂȘte
The French lyrics are about somebody who can?t make up his mind. Should he stay of should he go? The lyrics are completely in sync with the music.

La Complainte de Mackie
Originally a classic song by Kurt Weill, and by many covered in a jazz version. It's a magnificent composition. It starts out very subtly, and with each verse an instrument is added. It's also a fantastic story in itself.

Autour de Minuit
One of the most melancholic songs on the album, and the most poetic French lyrics I have ever heard. It has an enormous depth and is a beautiful translation of the original.

A true caravan song, with a solo by Stochelo Rosenberg! Our collaboration was the result of a tour I did with the Rosenberg Trio. I love their gypsy style.

Dansez Maintenant
This is a French version of Glenn Miller's "Moonlight Serenade". Dave's high timbre combines beautifully with my sultry, low voice. It was a thrill to work with him.

While the new book, "GONZO: The Life of Hunter S. Thompson: An Oral Biography," by Corey Seymour, along with media god and Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner was released on Halloween day, an abridged, albeit extended book jacket version can be found in this month's Men's Vogue in a well-documented piece. No self-respecting modern journalist hasn't at least once fancied the notion of chucking the conventional route and just going plain gonzo like the late renegade writer Hunter S. Thompson. Corey Seymour, a senior editor at Men's Vogue magazine, had his first journalism gig at Rolling Stone as the $18,000-a-year handler of Thompson. Seymour recounts his diverse duties included resuscitating the writer from comatose states, buying him inflatable sex dolls, and preventing him from throwing heavy objects out of hotel windows. Ah, the life of a modern would-be handler… A must-read for aspiring gonzo scribes and those interested in modern journalism in relation to the modern journalist celebrity. To read it, click HERE.
