It follows the story of two spies, Nigel and Sophie, as they puzzle over a mysterious Soviet plot. A bold new aggression from the Red Army comes at the same time as a series of strange excavations by Soviet teams around the globe. Working for the secret, nameless Agency, the Colds race from site to site, trying to unravel the mystery. But the more they learn, the more elusive the plot becomes, and meanwhile, the 84 nations are being drawn into the global conflict.

Their anonymity protected by longstanding agreements, the hidden races are finding that the magnitude of the Cold War is threatening that safety, reaching beyond the human world to ensnare them in the fight for world hegemony. When the Colds learn the terrible purpose behind the Soviet plot, they are faced with an impossible choice: total domination is within the Soviet’s reach, but revealing this fact will almost certainly lead to nuclear war.
