I can tell you that the locations of interest are all DEFINITELY ON THE WEST SIDE. Which is to say Beverly Hills, Culver City, and West Los Angeles. All three have a great deal to offer, and all three sites communities are excited about the prospect of having The Jazz Bakery in their midst.

I assure you our POLICY WILL REMAIN EXACTLY THE SAME in our new location: Artists will be presented in a concert format; our reduced student pricing will remain intact; as will our Wall of Fame, populated by the many heartfelt honors you've bestowed upon your favorite players and/or friends. As soon as The Jazz Bakery re-opens in its new permanent home, your Upper Crust card will be extended to allow for "time out." And of course, as always, we will continue as a non-profit organization and maintain our 501(c)3 status. Click here to see the many TAX DEDUCTIBLE ways you can help the Jazz Bakery stay alive!

Billie’s Ghost, the 2005 debut novel from Chad Hautmann, is a must read for jazz and blues fans. A young widower, suffering from depression, drunkenness, and loneliness, finds his home infiltrated by a woman who may or may not be the ghost of Billie Holiday. She comes and goes without warning and makes him doubt his sanity – this is Laura for the jazz set.

This is a dark, yet lyrical story, filled with the rhythms and beats of Billie Holiday’s voice at its sad, haunting best. And despite the themes of depression, blues, and death, Billie’s Ghost is a satisfying, uplifting read by the time its last page is turned and last note sounded.

It’s been a year since Casey’s wife died, leaving him the youngest widower in Naples, Florida, and in the throes of a seemingly bottomless depression. Now he lives only for nighttime, drinking to forget and listening to Ellington, Coltrane, and Davis. His friends have given up on him, and he’s certainly given up on himself. That is, until Billie Holiday – or someone eerily reminiscent of her – drops into his life.

She calls herself Eleanora, and while she may be the result of Casey’s loneliness and drinking, there is no mistaking that beautiful, had-some-rough-times-voice, so like Lady Day’s. But no matter who she is, she soon becomes the one source of light in Casey’s dark world, helping him to find solace, reenter the world, and rid himself of the guilt that has plagued him since his wife’s death.

Haunting and luminous, Billie’s Ghost is a novel of hope, faith, and learning to move on.

So, more Nicholas Sparks than Dashiel Hammett, but I enjoyed this slim tome. I think you will too, especially if the voice of Billie Holiday in the dark of the night raises your goose bumps.

This is George Michael attempting to create yet another post-Wham image. This time he and co-producer Phil Ramone have crafted a warm, intimate album built around a small combo, full orchestra, big band, harp and even a rock band. Unlike his previous post-Wham releases ["Faith" ('87), "Listen" ('90) and "Older" ('96)], George is not concerned about chart success. This is the most relaxed GM yet. The album split his fans right down the middle when they were first confronted with it ten years ago. On the one side those who wanted nothing other than his up-beat duo style a la Wham. On the other, those die-hards, perhaps older and more adaptable types like myself, who were open to a more laid-back, sophisticated sound from the pop star.

HERE'S THE INTRODUCTION TO A VERY COOL NEW SITE BY ERIC SELTZER DEDICATED TO ALL THINGS BATMOBILE . . .

My fascination with the Batmobile began when I was about 4 years old. This photo on the left is circa 1972 with my favorite toy -- a tin battery-operated, blue colored Batmobile. I remember playing with it all the time until it stopped working one day. Thanks to my grandfather, the motor was fixed, but unfortunately the prognosis for Robin's caved in head was grave.

Fast forward 20+ years... My tin toy was LONG gone, but nostalgic for the past, I set out on a search for a big piece of my childhood. I scoured antique and collector shows and after quite a few years, finally found one (remember, this was pre-eBay). It set me back about $250, but I was happy to pay the price. Since then I have owned, at one time or another, over 10 of these tin toys in various colors (black, red, and blue) and various conditions.

Little did I know this quest would eventually lead to my adventures in meeting the creator of this icon and the consuming hobby this website has become.

Since creating the site in 1999, I have had over 6,000,000 visitors & the site has been featured in The New York Times, The Sacramento Bee, Motor Trend, Car Craft, Car and Driver, RC Driver, Car Collector, and RIDES magazine & many other publications. We have also been used as a reference source by Mattel (Hot Wheels) and various DVD's too.

We had a blast last night when England’s top swing band, The Jive Aces, touched down and turned Pasadena into the swingingest place on the planet!

In the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, England arguably saved the blues and many blues singers from obscurity. And it was the resurgence of swing and jive in England that led to the American success of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Royal Crown Revue, The Wiseguys, and others. England (with an assist from Japan) also embraced Brian Setzer and the Stray Cats’ rock-a-billy vibes long enough for the Brian Setzer Orchestra’s big band sound to emerge.

Now come The Jive Aces. Formed in 1989, these guys play a uniquely British fusion of jive, boogie-woogie, rock-a-billy, and swing, from standards to originals. On Saturday night, they set over 200 dancers swinging, jiving, jitterbugging, and lindy hopping like it was the end of the world.

Front man, Ian Clarkson (vocals & trumpet) oozed charisma and channeled Bobby Darin as he worked the crowd’s frenzy, and the rest of the band (Ken Smith – double bass, ‘Big” John Fordham – saxes & clarinet, Vince Hurley – piano, Alex Douglas – trombone, Peter Howell – who was out with the flu Saturday so Mark admirably filled in – on drums) in their signature canary yellow suits, black shirts, and red ties, were as sharp as new razors.

Touring in support of their new CD Recipe For Rhythm, the song of the evening had to go to the original London Rhythm. Written by drummer Peter Howell and pianist Vince Hurley, London Rhythm starts by swinging the sounds of Big Ben’s ‘bongs’ and rips on from there – very possibly the song to define The Jive Aces.

Cheers for a great evening that left the crowd sweat soaked and jumping. My feet tapped all the way home.
