TOM BISHOP ~ R.I.P.

TOM BISHOP ~ R.I.P.

Thomas Bishop of Newbury Park, CA, died Thursday following a courageous battle with illness, finally succumbing to respiratory failure at the age of 79.

Tom was born September 6, 1929, in Cheam, Surrey, England. As a young man, he served with the British Army’s 73rd Anti-Aircraft Regiment stationed in North Africa. In 1962, he immigrated with his wife and young son to the United States in pursuit of opportunity and sunshine. After an early working career in men’s haberdasheries in both England and Canada, he held other retail postions in America before becoming a delivery driver for Hartz Mountain for seventeen years. He retired in 1991. He was proud to become an American citizen in 2007, while still retaining his love for England.

He enjoyed gardening and took particular joy from working in the sunshine with his wife and their roses. He had a natural talent for display and design, making his Christmas fireplace displays a main highlight of the season.

A wonderfully caring individual with a smile for everyone, Tom is survived by his loving wife Joan of 57 years; his son Paul and daughter-in-law Dell Bishop of Camarillo; his grandson Greg, wife Amber, and great-grandson Jared of San Antonio, Texas; his sister and brother-in-law June and Derrick Watling of White Rock, B.C. Canada; other extended family members in England; and many special friends, all of whom loved his laugh and delightfully dry British sense of humor.

The funeral service will be 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at Conejo Mountain Funeral Home, Chapel of the Islands in Camarillo, CA, with burial to follow.

Assisting the family with funeral arrangements is Conejo Mountain Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 2052 Howard Road, Camarillo.

THE TAINTED ARCHIVE HAS A COOL POST ON ELVIS' FILMS TO COINCIDE WITH THE ANNIVERSARY OF HIS PASSING:

August 1977, the world is in shock – Elvis Presley, the worlds most popular recording star in history is dead. The worldwide outpouring of grief is incredible and radio stations and TV channels in every corner of the globe sounded out with the unmistakable Presley baritone. The Presley image, sometimes young and viral, more often middle aged and bloated sat beneath the headlines of newspapers everywhere. The King of Rock and Roll was gone, his legacy would be his music but few mentioned the films that Presley had left behind and his own peculiar contribution to the acting field. He made 31 films, not including a couple of concert movies, and not all of them were as bad as you remember.

JAZZ ON LIFE SUPPORT!

JAZZ ON LIFE SUPPORT!

HERE’S SOME ROUBLING NEWS FROM THE WALL STREET JOURNAL BY WRITER TERRY TEACHOUT:

In 1987, Congress passed a joint resolution declaring jazz to be “a rare and valuable national treasure.” Nowadays the music of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis is taught in public schools, heard on TV commercials and performed at prestigious venues such as New York’s Lincoln Center, which even runs its own nightclub, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola.

Here’s the catch: Nobody’s listening.

No, it’s not quite that bad—but it’s no longer possible for head-in-the-sand types to pretend that the great American art form is economically healthy or that its future looks anything other than bleak.

The bad news came from the National Endowment for the Arts’ latest Survey of Public Participation in the Arts, the fourth to be conducted by the NEA (in participation with the U.S. Census Bureau) since 1982. These are the findings that made jazz musicians sit up and take notice:

• In 2002, the year of the last survey, 10.8% of adult Americans attended at least one jazz performance. In 2008, that figure fell to 7.8%.

• Not only is the audience for jazz shrinking, but it’s growing older—fast. The median age of adults in America who attended a live jazz performance in 2008 was 46. In 1982 it was 29.

LES PAUL R.I.P.

LES PAUL R.I.P.

KELLY’S LOUNGE SOUNZ PAYS TRIBUTE TO THE PASSING OF THE
GREAT LES PAUL WITH THIS SUPERB DOWNLOAD:

LINER NOTES:

Les Paul, the guitar virtuoso and inventor who revolutionized music and created rock 'n' roll as surely as Elvis Presley and the Beatles by developing the solid-body electric guitar and multitrack recording, died Thursday at age 94.

Four years ago Paul issued his first newly recorded album in 27 years (the last one being his collaboration with Chet Atkins, "Chester & Lester", in 1978), and it's a classic rock guitar version of the Frank Sinatra Duets projects, which is to say that, on most tracks, Paul is joined by superstar friends, most of them guitarists, who have overdubbed their parts elsewhere.

The list of guitarists is truly stupendous – Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Rick Derringer, Peter Frampton, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, Buddy Guy, Steve Miller, Joe Perry, Keith Richards, Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi, Neal Schon, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd. As if that weren't enough, the featured vocalists include Mick Hucknall of Simply Red, Johnny Rzeznik of Goo Goo Dolls, Sting, Joss Stone, and Edgar Winter.

The sidemen are equally stellar (if better known among their peers than to the general public), including guitarist Steve Lukather, bassists Nathan East and Will Lee, and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta. So, there is no problem with chops here.

While the album is a celebration of Paul, and there are some endearing excerpts from the old Les Paul & Mary Ford radio show, as well as a home tape of family friend Steve Miller as a five-year-old, the old master himself only really shines on the numbers lacking the superstars, a strong version of Duke Ellington's "Caravan" and "69 Freedom Special". Otherwise, the album is more about what a couple of generations of rock guitarists have done with Paul's signature Gibson guitar model than it is about Paul himself. ~ William Ruhlmann

AURELIO ZEN AND CHIEF INSPECTOR BANKS HEADED FOR TV!

AURELIO ZEN AND CHIEF INSPECTOR BANKS HEADED FOR TV!

I’M EXCITED BY THIS NEWS FROM ENGLAND’S THE GUARDIAN NEWSPAPER’S BLOG:

The production company behind drama Wallander hopes to replicate the success of the Swedish detective by launching two new television detectives on BBC1 and ITV1.

Left Bank Pictures, run by The Queen producer Andy Harries, has had scripts commissioned for three Aurelio Zen mysteries, written by the late Michael Dibden, for BBC1 and one Inspector Banks drama, written by Peter Robinson, for ITV1.

The Zen mysteries are set in Italy and feature a middle-aged detective who in the early novels lives with his mother in a Rome apartment. They are being adapted into feature-length dramas for BBC1 through BBC Scotland.

Ratking is being adapted by Peter Berry, Vendetta by Simon Burke and Dead Lagoon by Patrick Harbinson.

Robinson's 2002 novel Aftermath – one of 16 Inspector Banks mysteries – is being adapted by Robert Murphy for transmission next year.

The film will feature detective chief inspector Alan Banks, who lives in the Yorkshire town of Eastvale. Divorced with two children, he works from the local police station overlooking the town's busy market square.

It is hoped the two detective mysteries could become long-running franchises.

THE HUNTER!

ALSO AT GUNS IN THE GUTTER, CHRIS MILLS ALSO REVIEWS THE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED DARWYN COOKE GRAPHIC NOVEL TAKE ON RICHARD STARKS FIRST PARKER NOVEL:

Undoubtedly the most anticipated crime comic in years (around here, anyway), Darwyn Cooke's adaptation of Richard Stark's (the late Donald E. Westlake) first "Parker" crime novel, The Hunter, is a truly beautiful piece of narrative art, and exceedingly faithful to its source material.

After a successful heist, professional thief Parker (no other name) was betrayed by his partner, shot by his wife, and left to die in a burning house. He survived, though, and now he's out for revenge – and to get his share of the money from the heist. To accomplish this, he'll have to go head-to-head with the Outfit, and nothing – or nobody – is going to stand in his way.

ANGEL OF DEATH!

ANGEL OF DEATH!

CHRIS MILLS REVIEWS THIS HARDBOILED ACTIONEER AT HIS GUNS IN THE GUTTER BLOG:

I don't make a habit of reviewing movies here in the Gutters, but since this particular flick was written by comics scribe Ed Brubaker (Criminal, Scene of the Crime) I thought this one was relevant and worth covering here.

Originally serialized online, Ed Brubaker’s Angel of Death is an entertaining B-action flick vehicle for Kiwi stuntwoman Zoe Bell (Death Proof, Kill Bill), directed by Paul Etheridge.

Bell portrays a professional hit woman named Eve, who, during a botched assassination attempt, is stabbed in the head. She survives, but finds herself haunted by visions of one of her victims, and compelled to hunt down and execute the ones who originally commissioned the hit. Of course, this doesn’t sit well with her bosses, who send other hit men to put her down. Carnage ensues.

FORGOTTEN BOOKS ~ DEAD MEN’S LETTERS BY ERLE STANLEY GARDNER!

FORGOTTEN BOOKS ~ DEAD MEN’S LETTERS BY ERLE STANLEY GARDNER!

I’ve always enjoyed Erle Stanley Gardner’s pulp short stories. Perry Mason never cut it with me, but Donald Lam and Bertha Cool (written as A.A. Fair) were tops with me when it came to Gardner’s novel length works.

Dead Men’s Letters was the first collection of Gardner’s Ed Jenkins stories and I enjoyed them from first to last.

WARNING: While the stories are great, the jacket copy has some howlers...

Erle Stanley Gardner – creator of Perry Mason – was the bestselling author of detective fiction of all time [I think Dame Agatha’s estate might argue this point]. Many of his best early short novels originally appeared in the famous Black Mask magazine alongside Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler.

Gardner’s most enduring hero was Ed Jenkins [wait, what about Perry Mason?], also known as the Phantom Crook. So enduring was he that when the author considered discontinuing the exploits of this intrepid man, his fans overwhelmingly succeeded in ensuring his longevity
[I think the cover copy writer was mistaking Gardner and his character Ed Jenkins for Arthur Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes].

Working beyond the law, pursued by police and criminals, Jenkins’ undesired notoriety made him a prize target for blackmail, coercion and imprisonment. But those who tried to force his hand never knew the man he could be when his back was to the wall, fighting.

This first ever collection of Ed Jenkins short novels
[is a short novel the same as a short story?] represents the most thrilling adventures of Erle Stanley Gardner’s contribution to the hard-boilded detective genre [riiiiiight].

COME FLY WITH ME : THE MUSICAL!

COME FLY WITH ME : THE MUSICAL!

OL’ BLUE EYES SETS THE MOOD FOR TWYLA THARP’S BREATHTAKING CHOREOGRAPHY IN THE NEW MUSICAL

COME FLY WITH ME

A New Musical Conceived by Twyla Tharp with Vocals by Frank Sinatra

Production Debuts September 15 at the Nationally Acclaimed Alliance Theatre in Atlanta; International Tour Scheduled for Summer 2010

This September, Twyla Tharp will bring the music of one of the world’s most legendary singers to the stage in the new musical, COME FLY WITH ME. Conceived, directed and choreographed by the legendary Twyla Tharp (who most recently won the Tony Award for Movin’ Out) and featuring the music and vocals of Frank Sinatra, COME FLY WITH ME is a unique production celebrating love and life as it follows four couples over the course of one night falling in and out of love. The show has its world premiere at Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre – a 2007 Tony Award recipient – on September 15, 2009, running through October 11. Ticket information is available at www.alliancetheatre.org. The production will begin a Broadway-bound tour in summer 2010.

Set in a crowded nightclub, COME FLY WITH ME is sexy, athletic, passionate and filled with optimism, providing a glimpse into the four couples’ relationships. The audience follows each character on their journey of discovery, love and life, conveyed through Sinatra’s music and brought to breathless heights through Tharp’s high-energy choreography.

Tharp’s direction and choreography blend the incomparable vocals of Frank Sinatra, an international company of 38 – including world-class dancers and a 17-piece on-stage Big Band – and a wonderful hit parade of song, including Let’s Fall In Love, Witchcraft, Summer Wind, Body & Soul, It’s All Right with Me, Take Five, That’s Life, Nice ‘n’ Easy and My Way.

By special arrangement with Frank Sinatra Enterprises and The Sinatra Family, COME FLY WITH ME features original recorded “masters” of Frank Sinatra’s voice -- arguably one of the most recognized voices in the history of music -- backed by a live on-stage Big Band. The show’s score combines newly discovered vocal performances from the Sinatra archives along with signature arrangements of some of his most famous work. The majority of music is comprised of songs from The Great American Song Book, composed by the likes of Irving Berlin, Cy Coleman, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, Sammy Cahn, Hoagy Carmichael, Jerome Kern, Johnny Mercer, Richard Rodgers and Jimmy Van Heusen.

The 17-piece Big Band that will be supporting the show will be comprised of acclaimed musicians from across North America. Renowned jazz artist Dee Daniels is featured at the piano, providing occasional vocals and the “female point of view.” COME FLY WITH ME features sets by James Youmans (West Side Story), lighting by Donald Holder (The Lion King, Movin’ Out), costumes by Katherine Roth (All My Children), and music supervision by Sam Lutfiyya (Movin’ Out, 101 Dalmatians).

“Twyla Tharpe is America's dance laureate, a genius who understands among other things: discipline, music, dance, relationships, emotions and the human body. Somehow she reaches through the chaos of our lives and, with the help of Frank Sinatra's voice, shows us that everything is going to be all right,” said Nancy Sinatra. “Having watched her in this process of creating - inventing - from the smallest detail in pre-production: the casting, set, lighting, clothes and the choice of songs, to the final show we are about to enjoy, I can say she is hands on and in charge. This is one hell of a show. We can all be grateful for the works that she shares with us and I often think, wistfully, about the wonders in her brilliant, beautiful mind that we may never get to see.”

According to Tina Sinatra, “Dad was particularly proud of the Twyla Tharp and Mikhail Baryshnikov ballet, SINATRA SUITE. We saw it together at the Kennedy Center and to say he was delighted is an understatement. It brought us all to tears. I don’t think he’d experienced seeing his music set to dance before, which prompted him to ask: ‘Why hadn’t someone done it before?’ He would talk about it for years to come and was ever appreciative of Twyla and Company. When it was performed again in Los Angeles, we attended the performance. It is sweetly nostalgic for us to be working with Twyla on this production a decade after Dad’s passing.”

Special care has been taken to expand some of the original musical treatments that were created for Frank Sinatra. In some cases exciting dance segments have been added to support the show, and featured instrumental soloists have been added to enhance the pre-existing works. Some new arrangements and orchestrations, as well as adaptations, have been created for COME FLY WITH ME by Dave Pierce (Chicago, Radio City Music Hall’s Christmas Spectacular and music director for the 2010 Winter Olympics).

“We are thrilled to bring Frank Sinatra’s music and Twyla Tharp’s incomparable choreography to the stage with this incredible new theatrical event,” said Nicholas Howey, executive producer for His Way Entertainment, LLC in association with WAT Limited and Troika Marketing. “Combining the heart of the Great American Song Book performed on stage by a Big Band, with amazingly talented dancers and powerful choreography, COME FLY WITH ME will undoubtedly appeal to theatergoers of all ages. We are excited to launch this production at the Alliance Theatre and then begin a worldwide tour next year.”

“It's a profound honor and, frankly, a thrill to be a partner in the premiere of a brilliant work that combines the jaw dropping dance theatre of Twyla Tharp and the music of that icon of icons, Frank Sinatra,” said Alliance Theatre Artistic Director Susan V. Booth. “COME FLY WITH ME gives Alliance patrons and the city of Atlanta the first look at the music and choreography that will be a deeply significant contribution to American theatre. A mix of artistry and excellence not to be missed.”

REMEMBERING FLEMING!

REMEMBERING FLEMING!

THE HMSS WEBLOG REPORTS:

Aug. 12 is the 45th anniversary of the death of Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond. There’s a tendency to forget Fleming. His last Bond novel was published in 1965 and the movies long ago became the center of the 007 universe. While fleming lived to see two of his novels turned into movies (and visited the set of the third, Goldfinger), he never saw Bond movies become mega hits.

Still, the anniversary of his death is reason enough to remember the person who actually created James Bond.

CHUCK ~ THE RETURN, 2010!

CHUCK ~ THE RETURN, 2010!

For me, the humorus spy show Chuck has been one of the few current bright spots in television programming, so I was peeved when it looked like the show was sitting on the cancellation bubble. However, NBC has stepped up to the plate (they didn’t have much choice with the mess their schedule is in) and annoce3d Chuck will be returning in March of 2010 after the Winter Games.

At the recent Television Critics Association press tour, NBC has confirmed this decision, squashing rumors of an earlier start to show’s third season. This was a possibility speculated by fans and perhaps fueled by comments from various people involved with the show as production for the seasons starts this month.

When Chuck does return, it is scheduled for 13 episodes, but Angela Bromstad (the President of NBC Entertainment) did mention the possibility of the show’s extension into the summer – which basically means the extension is rating dependent.

Chuck stars Zachary Levi, Yvonne Strahovski, and Adam Baldwin and should never have been in the discussion of being canceled.

CUGI'S COCKTAILS ~ XAVIER CUGAT (1963)

CUGI'S COCKTAILS ~ XAVIER CUGAT (1963)

ANOTHER CLASSIC DOWNLOAD FROM KELLY’S LOUNGE SOUNDZ.

LINER NOTES:

Contrary to the title, "Cugi's Cocktails" is no sleepy album of cocktail music. It has all the elements a listener would expect of Xavier Cugat's first great stereo album: an agreeable theme, a dash of exotic flair and all the bombast of the preceding half-decade of experimenting with high-fidelity stereo recording.

"One Mint Julep" would have made "Twist With Cugat". Also of note are the bossa nova "Daiquiri", Hal Mooney's "Cugi's Cocktail" (a hully gully cha cha) and "Singapore Sling".

Cugat's composition "Zombie" is exotic and wonderful, and only "Old Fashioned" is dismissible. With fun, better than average artwork, "Cugi's Cocktails" makes a fine addition to any record collection or bar. ~ Tony Wilds

BE MINE TONIGHT ~ ABBY LANE / TITO PUENTE (1958)!

BE MINE TONIGHT ~ ABBY LANE / TITO PUENTE (1958)!

ANOTHER CLASSIC DOWNLOAD FROM KELLY’S LOUNGE SOUNDZ. I’M INTO THIS ONE FOR THE COVER ALONE!

LINER NOTES:

"Be Mine Tonight" pairs sexpot singer Abbe Lane with mambo maestro Tito Puente and his orchestra for a lively, colorful Latin jazz-inspired release that follows the stylistic blueprint of her long tenure with bandleader husband Xavier Cugat.

Compared to the absurdly carnal approach of Lane's subsequent albums in tandem with arranger Sid Ramin, this is a relatively serious straightforward affair with an intriguing and broad selection of material that spans from "Nightingale" to "Whatever Lola Wants" to "Babalu".

Puente's high-octane arrangements guarantee the energy never flags, but Lane commands the spotlight from start to finish galvanizing otherwise innocuous lyrics with wit, sophistication and sheer lust. ~ Jason Anken

Y/A CORNER ~ ANGRY MANAGEMENT BY CHRIS CRUTCHER!

Y/A CORNER ~ ANGRY MANAGEMENT BY CHRIS CRUTCHER!

CHRIS CRUTCHER IS WITHOUT A DOUBT MY FAVORITE YOUNG ADULT WRITER ~ HE’S ACTUALLY ONE OF MY FAVORITE WRITERS PERIOD. EVERY NOVEL IS A KNOCKOUT. I ESPECIALLY RECOMMEND WHALE TALK, STOTAN, AND IRONMAN.

HIS LATEST NOVEL , ANGRY MANAGEMENT (INCORPORATING CHARACTERS FROM PRIOR BOOKS, WHO I CAN’T WAIT TO MEET AGAIN) HAS JUST BEEN PUBLISHED IN HARDCOVER, ALONG WITH THE PAPERBACK EDITION OF THE BRILLIANT DEADLINE.

ANGRY MANAGEMENT

Every kid in this group wants to fly. Every kid in this group has too much ballast. Mr. Nak's Angry Management group is a place for misfits. A place for stories. And, man, does this crew have stories.

There's Angus Bethune and Sarah Byrnes, who can hide from everyone but each other. Together, they will embark on a road trip full of haunting endings and glimmering beginnings.

And Montana West, who doesn't step down from a challenge. Not even when the challenge comes from her adoptive dad, who's leading the school board to censor the article she wrote for the school paper.

And straightlaced Matt Miller, who had never been friends with outspoken genius Marcus James. Until one tragic week—a week they'd do anything to change—brings them closer than Matt could have ever imagined.

Chris Crutcher fills these three stories with raw emotion. They are about insecurity, anger, and prejudice. But they are also about love, freedom, and power. About surviving.

And hope.

HARD CASE CRIME CHRISTMAS!

HARD CASE CRIME CHRISTMAS!

NEWS FROM HARD CASE CRIME:
Friends,

I know, in my last e-mail I wrote that I planned to keep the identity of our second December title a secret until we got closer to its Christmas-season publication date (I think I said something like "I'll tell you when it gets a little colder outside"). Well, it's only August and still plenty hot here in New York City -- but it's hard to keep a secret in the age of the Internet, especially when sites like Amazon.com put books up for pre-order four months in advance...

Yes: You can now see our second December title on Amazon.com (though you have to hunt around a little, due to a bizarre error that has our book's cover attached for some reason to a horror novel by Gord Rollo). But since they let the cat out of the bag early, I figured we might as well come clean, too -- so you can find a full complement of information on the book (cover art, description, sample chapter) at our Web site: www.HardCaseCrime.com.

And what is the book...? It's the very hard-boiled story of a man murdered by a blast from a sawed-off shotgun to the face at point-blank range; of a criminal on the run from Chicago who comes to a dirty Pennsylvania coal-mining town and winds up locking horns with the corrupt Masonic lodge that runs the town; of a Pinkerton detective who sets out to clean up the town; and of the doom that pursues a man across an ocean and leaves him at the mercy of the world's most ruthless criminal mastermind. It's a story narrated by a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, whose partner in investigating the twisted plot is a drug addicted private investigator with a brain like a steel trap.

And wait till you see the cover -- Glen Orbik has really outdone himself here, with his portrait of a gorgeous, bosomy dame in a transparent negligee watching with horror as a man with a brand on his arm appears in her doorway.

And the author -- it's one of the best-selling authors in the world. His books have been made into movies, computer games, comic books; they've sold tens of millions of copies. He's not someone you'd think of as a Hard Case Crime author in a million years!

Now, I can hear you out there, saying, "Come on, Ardai -- if you're gonna spill, spill already. What's the name of the damn book?"

Well.

I think you're just going to have to visit our Web site and see for yourself.

HEAT WAVE!

HEAT WAVE!

First Chapter of Heat Wave by Richard Castle Available Today for Download

The first chapter of the first book in the Detective Nikki Heat mystery series by Richard Castle, Heat Wave, is now available for download on the ABC.com website.

In the ABC series Castle, mystery writer Richard Castle is shown developing a new series with a character based in part on Detective Kate Beckett. It's kind of a running joke through the first season. As a way to promote the second season, a real book has been written (Heat Wave, available September 29th) and ABC is posting chapters from the book a week at a time online. The real author has not been identified.

Book synopsis: A New York real estate tycoon plunges to his death on a Manhattan sidewalk. A trophy wife with a past survives a narrow escape from a brazen attack. Mobsters and moguls with no shortage of reasons to kill trot out their alibis. And then, in the suffocating grip of a record heat wave, comes another shocking murder and a sharp turn in a tense journey into the dirty little secrets of the wealthy. Secrets that prove to be fatal. Secrets that lay hidden in the dark until one NYPD detective shines a light.

Mystery sensation Richard Castle, blockbuster author of the wildly bestselling Derrick Storm novels, introduces his newest character, NYPD Homicide Detective Nikki Heat. Tough, sexy, professional, Nikki Heat carries a passion for justice as she leads one of New York City's top homicide squads. She's hit with an unexpected challenge when the commissioner assigns superstar magazine journalist Jameson Rook to ride along with her to research an article on New York's Finest. PulitzerPrize-winning Rook is as much a handful as he is handsome. His wise-cracking and meddling aren't her only problems. As she works to unravel the secrets of the murdered real estate tycoon, she must also confront the spark between them. The one called heat.
