FORGOTTEN BOOKS: SEXPIONAGE PART II!
I had so much fun with last week’s Forgotten Books: Sexpionage post, I wanted to do a follow up this week with another similar series I came across while returning last week’s books to my shelves.
THE MAN FROM T.O.M.C.A.T.
MALLORY T. KNIGHT
Written by Bernhardt J. Hurwood, under the pseudonym Mallory T. Knight, super spy Tim O’Shane, T.O.M.C.A.T.’s top man in the field, operated for nine sexpionage assignments from 1967 to 1969.
Hurwood was known more for his horror anthologies, but he did serve one term on the board of directors of the Mystery Writers of America.
Here’s the hype from the back cover of one of O’Shane’s typical assignments:
THE TERRIBLE TEN
Welcome to Hyenas’ Port. A fly speck on the Gulf coast where The terrible Ten are throwing a barbecue – with chopped liberty for a starter . . .
Where the lords of the underworld have erected an enormous temple of temptation, while just outside the 12 mile limit an ancient Chinese woman plows the Gulf in a floating pleasure palace that make Cleopatra’s barge look like a garbage scow . . . where The Man From T.O.M.C.A.T. has baited his most elaborate trap with some of the most delectable bait to ever run up a secret agent’s expense account!
Hit the trail of The Terrible Ten with T.O.M.C.A.T.’s Tim O’Shane as the assignment leads him from unlimited dalliances in the island paradise of Satyria to swinging sessions in London’s Horny Gardens. From a strange confrontation in the back room of Ma Fia’s sweet shop in New York to a double masquerade in San Francisco, an incredible double feature in wide-open Las Vegas, and finally to the heart of Terrible ten territory – the moth-eaten, flea-bitten, not-on-the-map nothingness known as hyenas’ Port where, with the aid of a $750,000 contribution from BLINTS, the assistance of a half-dozen leading American Gangsters, and the eager cooperation of countless sexually adept young women, The Man From T.O.M.C.A.T. finally faces the leaders of The Terrible Ten – AND IS THEN PUT UNDER ORDERS NOT TO DESTROY THEM!
If you’re like me none of that really made any sense, nor was it particularly titillating. Still, like its contemporaries, The Man From T.O.M.C.A.T. series sold well during its heyday, while currently forgotten by all but the most hardcore collectors among us. I think half of the fun of these series was thinking up appropriate wording for all of their clever acronyms . . .
