LEGENDS: THE ENCHANTED #0!

WRITTEN AND ILLUSTRATED BY NICK PERCIVAL

Radical Publishing presents a special $1 introductory issue for the upcoming hardcover graphic novel by award-winning illustrator Nick Percival (Dead of Night).

You think you know them… Think again!

Violently ripped from the pages of folklore emerge the Enchanted, supernatural immortals living in a dark, steampunk, creature-infested world where nature, technology and foul magic are in constant conflict. When the twisted, burnt remains of the half-wooden, half-mechanical warrior, Pinocchio are discovered, wolf-hunter Red Hood and giant-killer Jack realize the fragile rules of their existence have been shattered. With the help of the other Enchanted (the mercenary Goldilocks and psychic exterminators Hansel and Gretel), Jack and Red team up on an adventure to stop whatever, or whoever, is destroying their powers and murdering their kind.

The last time Radical debuted their $1 books, they quickly sold out and had to go to a second printing. Don’t miss out again on this limited, one-time-only event!

NUNS WITH GUNS ~ WHO KNEW!

NUNS WITH GUNS ~ WHO KNEW!

WRITTEN BY JASON M. BURNS
DRAWN BY ERICH OWEN

The Church has done many things to fight evil over the centuries, and has many great warriors do battle in God’s name. But Sisters Marie, Francis, Wendy and Bertha are different than most; the majority of religion’s staunch defenders have always been men. It’s a new era in doing the Lord’s work, and these four nuns are just the ass-kickers to do the job. However, when a cult takes a stab at raising the Antichrist, even these mighty soldiers might just have more on their plate than they can handle.

THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR!

Y/A CORNER ~ HEIST SOCIETY STEALS BIG!

Y/A CORNER ~ HEIST SOCIETY STEALS BIG!

I’m right in the middle of enjoying this sparkling Y/A novel about Kat Bishop, a teen from a family of cat burglars and master jewel thieves, caught up in the heist of her life.

The great cover presents Kat as an Audrey Hepburn/Grace Kelly look-a-like, which is actually perfect for the almost retro, To Catch A Thief, vibe exuding from between the novel’s covers.

As a result I wasn’t surprised by the news Warner Bros. (Describing the tale as The Thomas Crown affair with teens,) has just won a multi-studio bidding war to option the film.

Admist the current glut of teen angst vampire / werewolf novels and paranormal/urban romances cluttering the bookshelves, Heist Society is a zesty, refreshing, suspensful tale that is actually fun – making for a great change!

KARAOKE KILLERS!

KARAOKE KILLERS!

SINATRA SONG OFTEN STRIKES DEADLY CHORD

NEW YORK TIMES ~ The authorities do not know exactly how many people have been killed warbling “My Way” in karaoke bars over the years in the Philippines, or how many fatal fights it has fueled. But the news media have recorded at least half a dozen victims in the past decade and includes them in a subcategory of crime dubbed the “My Way Killings.”

The killings have produced urban legends about the song and left Filipinos groping for answers. Are the killings the natural byproduct of the country’s culture of violence, drinking and machismo? Or is there something inherently sinister in the song?

PULP FACTORY - 2009 AWARDS BALLOT ANNOUNCED!

PULP FACTORY - 2009 AWARDS BALLOT ANNOUNCED!

During the month of January, the fifty-two members of the Yahoo Pulp Factory group posted nominations for best new pulp fiction and artwork in four categories. The nominations were tallied and from them, those receiving the most nods were placed on the official ballot listed below. Members of the Pulp Factory have until midnight, March 31st to vote. Winners will be announced and awards presented at this year’s Windy City Pulp & Paper convention in Chicago.

The Pulp Factory is an informal group made up of both professional writers and artists and dedicated fans of the pulp genre. These awards were created to help recognize and promote new work, both fiction and art, in this classic American literary field. Ron Fortier is the group’s moderator. The Pulp Factory is not affiliated with any single publishing organization and many of its members have contributed to dozens of well known pulp markets.

“For too long the pulp community has only focused on rewarding old time creators,” Fortier said. “Yet in recent years we’ve seen a huge resurgence in new material by some of the brightest writers and artists working today. But no one was acknowledging their contributions and we thought it was time to remedy that omission.” The group hopes the awards will spur new interest in the genre and inspire other creators to enter the pulp world.

THE SPIDER #3!

THE STRANGE CASE OF THE SPIDER AND MR. HYDE!

The Spider: the most violent and ruthless crime fighter of all time…A cloaked, fanged, borderline crazy denizen of the dark force-feeding hard justice with a pair of ‘45’s!

The man-creature, hands about the Spider’s wrists, hoisted him off his feet and slammed him against the stone wall. The beast was powerful, incredibly so, for he suspended the Spider in midair and shook him like a child’s rattle. Then he twisted, and hurled the Spider. Helpless, grasping consciousness by silken webs, Wentworth’s back crashed into the low marble railing running along the balcony. Momentum carried him over the railing and hurtling towards death upon the theater floor twenty feet below…

NEW BRITISH COMIC BLOG ~ CHAMP!

A NEW BLOG DEDICATED TO THE BRITISH BOYS COMIC, CHAMP, WHICH RAN DURING THE MID ‘80s AND WAS ONE OF THE LAST TRADITIONAL ADVENTURE WEEKLYS ~ A NICE MIX OF FOOTBALL, MYSTERY, AND SCHOOLBOY ADVENTURE, PLUS A HUMOUR SECTION.

The two major differences between this boys paper & any of its predecessors was the page count only 28 compared to the usual 32 found in more established titles like Victor,Warlord & Spike. Also no sign of any war strips which was quite refreshing. The main focus was the 10 page complete football stories every week following United football clubs climb back to the top . . FROM PARIS WITH LOVE!

ALL ACTION FILM FANS SHOULD READ ROGER EBERT’S REVIEW OF THIS DISAPOINTING EUROPSPY FILM. EBERT ABSOLUTELY NAILS WHAT IS WRONG WITH CURRENT ACTION FILMS . . .

The fight construction is the same with most modern action movies. In past decades, studios went so far as to run fencing classes for swordfights. Stars like Buster Keaton, Douglas Fairbanks Sr. and Errol Flynn did their own stunts and made sure you could see them doing them. Most of the stunts in classic kung-fu movies, starring such stars as Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan, really happen. Sure, they used camera angles, trampolines and wires, but you try it and see how easy it is.

CGI makes that unnecessary. The stunt work is done by computers and the editing process. I fear that classic action sequences would be too slow for today's impatient action fans, who have been schooled on impossibilities. The stunt driving done in such chase landmarks as "The French Connection" and "Bullitt," where you could observe real cars in real space and time, has been replaced by what is essentially animation.

FORGOTTEN BOOKS ~ BLUE LINE MURDER!

FORGOTTEN BOOKS ~ BLUE LINE MURDER!

JAMES MOFFATT ~ FEATURING JOHNNY CANUCK

I discovered this gem, and I use the term loosely, hidden on my shelves while looking for something else. At the time I originally picked it up I was heavily collecting mysteries with sports backgrounds, and I think the only reason I hung onto it was it is a perfect example of a novel so bad it takes on a value all its own. Novice writers could use this title as encouragement of the if-this-can-get-published-then-I-can-get-published variety.

Private eye Johnny Canuck’s moniker, and the fact the fact he is investigating murder on a hockey team, would have you believing he’s Canadian, hey, but you’d be mistaken . . . Canuck is about as Canadian as the movie Rose Marie with Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald.

Johnny Canuck’s hot blood is one quarter Sioux Indian, going back to his grandfather, who had fought with Sitting Bull at the Big Horn. Because he liked the white Canadians, he changed his name to John Canuck – the usual name for a Canadian. His son kept the name, and so did Johnny...a tough resourceful private eye who gets results where others have failed. And there are quite a few gorgeous dames who agree.

Blue Line Murder, the second Canuck novel, our P.I. is hired by professional hockey’s Lakeview Otters to investigate the murder of their star defenseman, Tex "Cowboy" Brandt (obviously, the police were not available). Everything from plot to characterization to dialogue gets overwritten while our heroic P.I. uses his Indian senses to solve the case and bed women.

I'd met dames like her before. They were borderline nymphomaniacs. An attraction triggered a deep-seated craving and they had to keep going until they subjugated the man.

Okay. Sure. I’m glad that’s out in the open now.

There were eight of these hack jobs published by Compact in the mid-sixties. Moffatt was clearly pumping these out, along with many other titles in pseudonymous series – including the Hank Janson tales – as he pursued his wordsmith career.

From the late-sixties until 1980 Moffatt wrote for New English Library under his own name and pseudonyms, including J. J. More, Etienne Aubin, Trudi Maxwell, Leslie McManus, James Taylor, Ray Ferrier, Johnny Douglas, Ron Cunningham and Richard Allen. That said, only the novels Moffatt wrote as Richard Allen have had any lasting impact.

Under the Allen pseudonym, Moffat ground out a series of youthspolitation novels starting with Skinhead in 1970 and ending with Mod Rule in 1980. These fictional chronicles detailed in salacious (often racist) terms the British youth cult scene. They sold very well and have since become quite collectable.

THE JOHNNY CANUCK NOVELS:

Blood Is a Personal Thing (1965)
Blue Line Murder (1965)
The Eighth Veil (1965)
Time for Sleeping (1965)
Course of Villainy (1966)
Curtain of Hate (1966)
Terror-Go-Round (1966)
The Twisted Thread (1966)

Y/A CORNER ~ THE YOUNGEST TEMPLAR!

Y/A CORNER ~ THE YOUNGEST TEMPLAR!

MICHAEL SPRADLIN

BOOK ONE: KEEPER OF THE GRAIL

Left as a baby at a monastery, Tristan has spent the last 14 years working with the gentle monks and pondering his identity. Facts surrounding his arrival there seem to indicate he is of noble birth. Yet even these suspicions in no way prepare him for what’s in store with the arrival of Sir Thomas and a group of Knights Templar on their way to the Holy Land. In short order, Thomas makes Tristan his squire, Tristan makes an enemy of malevolent Sir Hugh, and the warriors, with Tristan now among their ranks, head to the Saracen stronghold of Acre.

Let the fighting begin! And so it does, with much of the book’s second half taken up with battles, skirmishes, and ambushes.

The deadly action, uncompromising in many of its descriptions, may take center stage, but Spradlin smartly doesn’t neglect story. Tristan is given an immense challenge and responsibility and meets new friends, whose names clever readers will find familiar. The stirring saga ends with a true cliff-hanger, priming fans for the next installment.

BOOK TWO: TRAIL OF FATE

The action and intrigue start right from the first page in this riveting sequel to Keeper of the Grail (Putnam, 2008). Shipwrecked and on his own, Tristan washes up on a beach on his way home from the Crusades. Instead of coming ashore in England, however, he lands in France, where a group of armed warriors take him prisoner. Celia, the leader of this band, appears to be in trouble, and her earnest desire to help her people, coupled with her pretty face, makes Tristan eager to do what he can for her.

Rejoined by his companions Robard Hode and Maryam, a Saracen assassin, he must choose between pursuing his original mission—returning the Holy Grail to Rosalyn Abbey in England—or aiding Celia against corrupt church leaders. In addition, a Templar who wants to claim the Grail for himself is still on Tristan's tail. Covering both action sequences and intrigue with the same brisk pacing, Spradlin gives audiences three appealing and sympathetic heroes to guide them through the strange and dangerous landscape.

The interplay between Robard and Maryam lightens the mood at tense moments, and the growing romance between them puts a brilliant spin on the traditional tales of Robin Hood and Maid Marian. Readers can jump into the series at this point, but the story has neither a beginning nor an ending; this second volume is a serial installment in a much larger tale.

FANTASY CORNER ~ THE THIEF TAKER’S APPRENTICE!

FANTASY CORNER ~ THE THIEF TAKER’S APPRENTICE!

STEPHEN DEAS (AUGUST 2010)

When Berren makes the mistake of stealing a purse from a thief-taker, it should have condemned him to a short and brutal life in the slave-mines. So when the thief-taker offers to train him as an apprentice instead, he can’t believe his luck. The thief-taker has secrets of his own, though, and Berren is soon sucked into a faraway war, filled with mercenary soldiers, necromancers who brew potions that can change your destiny, and a psychotic girl-princess with a penchant for cutting pieces out of her lovers’ souls.

Berren has lived in the city all his life. He has made his way as a thief, paying a little of what he earns to the Fagin like master of their band. But there is a twist to this tale of a thief. One day Berren goes to watch an execution of three thieves. He watches as the thief-taker takes his reward and decides to try and steal the prize. He fails. The young thief is taken. But the thief-taker spots something in Berren. And the boy reminds him of someone as well. Berren becomes his apprentice. And is introduced to a world of shadows, deceit and corruption behind the streets he thought he knew.

Full of richly observed life in a teeming fantasy city, a hectic progression of fights, flights and fancies and charting the fall of a boy into the dark world of political plotting and murder this marks the beginning of a new fantasy series for all lovers of fantasy - from fans of Kristin Cashore to Brent Weeks.

THE DEAD SHERIFF!

THE DEAD SHERIFF!

GREAT NEWS FROM PULP NOCTURNE BLOGGER MARK JUSTICE . . .

As the saying goes, there's a new sheriff in town.

A walking dead one.

According to legend, The Dead Sheriff was a lawman forced to watch the murders of his family before he was killed. His need for vengeance would not allow him to rest, and he rose from the grave to avenge himself upon his killers. Now he travels across the west, dispensing justice for those in need and sending the wicked to their graves.

He can never return to the grave until the western frontier is free of evil and tyranny.

The reality, however, is a little different….

So goes the premise of horror writer Mark Justice's new supernatural western tales of The Dead Sheriff, a multi-book series of fiction stories with echoes of the pulp and dime adventure novels of the old west.
