Y/A CORNER ~ LEX TRENT VERSUS THE GODS!

Y/A CORNER ~ LEX TRENT VERSUS THE GODS!

ALEX BELL

Law student Lex Trent’s world is inhabited by fearsome magicians, ageing crones and a menagerie of Gods and Goddesses. And while Lex is seemingly dedicated to his legal studies he’s always enjoyed a challenge – which is why he leads a double life as the notorious cat burglar ‘The Shadowman’ who has been (luckily) evading capture for years.

But Lex’s luck is about to run out because the Goddess of Fortune has selected him to be her player in the highly dangerous Games. Losing is not an option for Lex (particularly as it so often involves dying) but can he really win each of the perilous rounds? Given that the reward for doing so is money, fame and glory – all things that Lex is quite keen on – he’s going to do whatever it takes to make sure he will… and he’s certainly got good experience of cheating.

BEAT TO A PULP #61!

THE MASTER BEDROOM

BY ANONYMOUS-9!

Anonymous-9 is back and BEAT to a PULP has her! This is her first appearance since the award winning "Hard Bite" kicked ass a year ago. Not for the squeamish but neither was James M. Cain, a writer she admires.

What’s she been up to? Well, if you’re brave enough, go ahead and ask. Otherwise, sit back and enjoy what hard boiled fiction with a purpose is all about. C’mon, she’s waiting for you in The Master Bedroom.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Anonymous-9 won the 2008 Spinetingler Award for Best Short Story on the Web. She is a two-time Derringer nominee and currently competing for a Thriller Award sponsored by the International Thriller Writers. "The Master Bedroom" was originally a nightmare, and took nearly two years and 150 drafts to convert to story form.

A-9 feels it could possibly use another 150, but a writer has to stop somewhere. Henrik Ibsen's play Ghosts provided inspiration. Infrequent blogs and story links can be found at myspace.com/ano9

They say a man meets his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it. Which means that whatever you do, and whatever the result might be, your fortune cookie can smile at you and say "see? I told you so."

For some folks that road may lead to a destiny of great importance or heroic meaning. For others, it might lead to a face-down posture in a puddle somewhere. I suppose no one can tell. Except the cookie, and it ain't talkin'.

FANTASY CORNER ~ THE SILVER SKULL: SWORDS OF ALBION!

FANTASY CORNER ~ THE SILVER SKULL: SWORDS OF ALBION!

C.O.B.R.A.S. TAKE NOTE: SWORD, SORCERY, AND SPIES . . .

Two-time British Fantasy Award winner Chadbourn (the Age of Misrule trilogy) offers a grim and decidedly current take on supernatural Elizabethan intrigues.

Will Swyfte, England's greatest spy, is charged with stopping the faerie and their Spanish tools from acquiring the Skull, the Key and the Shield, magic items whose combination could devastate all of Britain. Scenes range from squalid London slums to King Philip's monumental El Escorial palace and the mighty confrontation with the Armada in the English Channel.

Readers familiar with cold war spy novels will wryly note Swyfte's visits to Dr. John Dee for the latest in spy technology, à la James Bond and Q. Graphic presentations of tortures from the rack to waterboarding recall contemporary issues in national security, carefully contextualized with Swyfte's dilemmas of personal versus professional codes.

Jean le Flambeur is a post-human criminal, mind burglar, confidence artist and trickster. His origins are shrouded in mystery, but his exploits are known throughout the Heterarchy - from breaking into the vast Zeusbrains of the Inner System to steal their thoughts, to stealing rare Earth antiques from the aristocrats of the Moving Cities of Mars. Except that Jean made one mistake. Now he is condemned to play endless variations of a game-theoretic riddle in the vast virtual jail of the Axelrod Archons - the Dilemma Prison - against countless copies of himself.

Jean's routine of death, defection and cooperation is upset by the arrival of Mieli and her spidership, Perhonen. She offers him a chance to win back his freedom and the powers of his old self - in exchange for finishing the one heist he never quite managed . . .

The Quantum Thief is a dazzling hard SF novel set in the solar system of the far future - a heist novel peopled by bizarre post-humans but powered by very human motives of betrayal, revenge and jealousy. It is a stunning debut.

FORGOTTEN BOOKS: CASTING IN DEAD WATER!

FORGOTTEN BOOKS: CASTING IN DEAD WATER!

DAVID LEITZ

I'm posting way early this week as I may not have a lot of computer access through the weekend. We’ll see how much I’m able to post, but at leat I won’t miss this regular entry.

The first entry in a four book, paperback original series, Casting In Dead Water (A Max Addams Fly-Fishing Mystery) was one of the better series published under St. Martin’s Dead Letter Mysteries imprint.

In reality, Casting in Dead Water, was actually the second book in the series. The first, The Fly-Fishing Corpse, however, was privately published by author Leitz and not picked up for reprint by St. Martins. Lietz sent me a copy years back, and it’s a shame it didn’t get to be part of the official series – although it is now somewhat collectible.

Lietz style is as laid back as the fly-fishing theme percolating in the background. The series is worth reading, especially if you are into fly-fishing. I’m not (put the filet only on the plate, no bones, no head, no tail, and make it not taste like fish), but I still enjoyed the ambience Leitz establishes via Whitforks Lodge.

CASTING IN DEAD WATER

There’s more than trout dying at whitforks lodge, and max is in over his waders.

Loon, vermont has perfect fishing, a great microbrewery – and a murder.

Spring has returned to the lush, forrested mountains of northern Vermont, and Whiteforks Lodge owner Max Addams and his staff are ready for another tranquil season of fly-fishing and hospitality . . . until a lumber compnay begins clear-cutting trees from the mountain above the lodge and Max’s trout start dying by the bushel.

Soon Max discovers it isn’t just trout that are turning belly-up. With one close friend found dead in the water, his livelihood at stake and the town turning against him, Max must reel in the killer before he becomes the catch of the day.

Leitz had one of the best of the early author websites to back this series, although, it appears to have disappeared from Google’s radar. Still, books in the series are readily available on the used market and as readable as ever.

U.N.C.L.E. ~ THE FINAL AFFAIR!

U.N.C.L.E. THE FINAL AFFAIR!

FELLOW C.O.B.R.A.S. AGENT WES BRITTON HAS DONE A GREAT SERVICE FOR FANS OF THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.

ON HIS SPY WISE WEBSITE HE HAS MADE THE FINAL MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. NOVEL, THE FINAL AFFAIR BY DAVID MCDANIEL, AVAILABLE AS A FREE PDF DOWNLOAD.

I JUMPED ON THIS AND SENT THE PDF FILE TO MY KINDLE EMAIL AND NOW HAVE IT RESIDING HAPPILY ON MY KINDLE.

FROM WES’ INTRODUCTION:

While a number of writers contributed to this series for Ace Books, none was as significant as David McDaniel. In fact his first, The Dagger Affair (No. 4 in the American series) contained the first use of the acronym for the evil THRUSH--the Technological Hierarchy for the Removal of Undesirables and the Subjugation of Humanity.

...McDaniel had written one last MFU story justly called The Final Affair which he unfortunately finished several months past its deadline, completed after the parent show’s demise. Ace Books was no longer interested in further novels beyond a handful of reprints of stories first published in England. The Final Affair would have been the 24th ACE story that would have brought the TV show to a more or less logical conclusion where the battle between U.N.C.L.E. and THRUSH finally came to an end.

FANTASY CORNER ~ THE LAST ARGUMENT OF KINGS!

FANTASY CORNER ~ THE LAST ARGUMENT OF KINGS!

JOE ABERCROMBIE

The sword & sorcery trilogy that began with The Blade Itself (2007) and Before They Are Hanged (2008) comes to a violent, sardonic and brilliant conclusion.

The shaky Union, menaced simultaneously by rampaging Northmen and by Gurkish invaders from the south, now must contend with intrigue and treachery in its capital, Adua. Summoned to play parts in a devastating confrontation between magical forces, conscience-ridden berserker Logen Ninefingers and honest, weary Union commander Colonel West come down from the north to meet painfully self-aware torturer Glokta, revenge-obsessed female warrior Ferro, pliable young adventurer Jezal and scheming, unscrupulous mage Bayaz.

All these people are believable, especially as they dabble in grimly convincing magic and struggle to hear their consciences through the roar of carnage and betrayal.

Abercrombie is a fresh new talent, presenting a dark view of life with wit and zest, and readers will mourn the end of this vivid story arc.

CITY OF DRAGONS ~ CONTEST!

CITY OF DRAGONS ~ CONTEST!

It’s still very early in the year, but I already know the just released City Of Dragons by Kelli Stanley is going to be hard to beat for my favorite book of 2010. It also has one of the best covers and interior book designs I've seen in a long time.

I enjoyed this 1940s San Francisco, steeped in noir sensibilities, hardboiled P.I. tale so much I want to share the experience, so I’m running a contest for a free copy.

To enter just leave a comment below stating you’d like to be in the contest before February 18th. I’ll make a randon drawing from all entries and announce the winner on Friday February 19th.

CITY OF DRAGONS

February, 1940.

In San Francisco's Chinatown, fireworks explode as the city celebrates Chinese New Year with a Rice Bowl Party, a three day-and-night carnival designed to raise money and support for China war relief. Miranda Corbie is a 33-year-old private investigator who stumbles upon the fatally shot body of Eddie Takahashi.

The Chamber of Commerce wants it covered up. The cops acquiesce. All Miranda wants is justice – whatever it costs.

From Chinatown tenements, to a tattered tailor's shop in Little Osaka, to a high-class bordello draped in Southern Gothic, she shakes down the city – her city – seeking the truth.

SHADOW OF THE TEMPLAR: THE MORNING STAR

SHADOW OF THE TEMPLAR: THE MORNING STAR

M. CHANDLER

Simon Drake is an up-and-coming young FBI hotshot, an agent with a personal track record so outstanding that it borders on unbelievable. Not yet thirty, he's already the leader of his own special ops team; a ragtag bunch of talented but nigh-uncontrollable lunatics, it's true, but under Simon's inspired leadership they're a force to be reckoned with, a team with an unparalleled success rate, a team with an almost unblemished record--until now.

Jeremy Archer is the brilliant and unpredictable scion of a long line of international art thieves, simultaneously a phenomenally wealthy English socialite and one of the most infamous criminals in the world. At twenty-seven years old he's already wanted on nearly every continent for thefts totalling more than ninety-one million dollars, and yet no one has ever come close to catching him--until now.

Now?

May the best man win.

The first book in the Shadow of the Templar series.

SHADOW OF THE TEMPLAR: DOUBLE DOWN

"Hypothetically, I was wondering how you'd feel about working on the side of the good guys. On a purely contractual and highly erratic basis, mind you." Little did Simon suspect the explosive consequences that would arise from his offer.

Because now Jeremy Archer has a double: another thief with skills and abilities eerily similar to Jeremy's own. When this mysterious double falls afoul of Simon and his team, Simon asks for Jeremy's help, because who better to catch Jeremy Archer than... Jeremy Archer?

If Jeremy Archer is anything, however, he's unpredictable--and there's more at stake here than Simon could have imagined. Because in the halls of the FBI 'double' has another meaning...

The second book in the Shadow of the Templar
series.

SHADOW OF THE TEMPLAR: WITH A BULLET

For Jeremy Archer, it all starts with a simple phone call from halfway around the world.

For Simon Drake, it all started three years ago...

Now a madman from Simon's past is on the loose, claiming his revenge on Simon and his team, one member at a time... and no one who stands in his way is safe.

No one.

Not even Jeremy Archer.

The third novel in the Shadow of the Templar series.

SHADOW OF THE TEMPLAR: HIGH FIDELITY

A fellow FBI agent with an old grudge picks Simon as the instrument of his revenge. And he knows the hidden truth behind one of Simon's closest-kept secrets... or does he?

On the other side of the world, two steps ahead of a ruthless, implacable foe accidentally set on his trail by Simon, Jeremy Archer is running for his life... or is he?

Now Simon finds himself torn between his job and his responsibilities, forced to make the ultimate choice, and no matter what he decides, he'll lose something important... or will he?

Fidelity, Bravery, Integrity... or Jeremy?

The fourth and final novel in the Shadow of the Templar series

THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR!

Y/A CORNER ~ HEIST SOCIETY STEALS BIG!

Y/A CORNER ~ HEIST SOCIETY STEALS BIG!

I’m right in the middle of enjoying this sparkling Y/A novel about Kat Bishop, a teen from a family of cat burglars and master jewel thieves, caught up in the heist of her life.

The great cover presents Kat as an Audrey Hepburn/Grace Kelly look-a-like, which is actually perfect for the almost retro, To Catch A Thief, vibe exuding from between the novel’s covers.

As a result I wasn’t surprised by the news Warner Bros. (Describing the tale as The Thomas Crown affair with teens,) has just won a multi-studio bidding war to option the film.

Admist the current glut of teen angst vampire / werewolf novels and paranormal/urban romances cluttering the bookshelves, Heist Society is a zesty, refreshing, suspensful tale that is actually fun – making for a great change!

KARAOKE KILLERS!

KARAOKE KILLERS!

SINATRA SONG OFTEN STRIKES DEADLY CHORD

NEW YORK TIMES ~ The authorities do not know exactly how many people have been killed warbling “My Way” in karaoke bars over the years in the Philippines, or how many fatal fights it has fueled. But the news media have recorded at least half a dozen victims in the past decade and includes them in a subcategory of crime dubbed the “My Way Killings.”

The killings have produced urban legends about the song and left Filipinos groping for answers. Are the killings the natural byproduct of the country’s culture of violence, drinking and machismo? Or is there something inherently sinister in the song?
