BEAT TO A PULP #64!

BEAT TO A PULP #64!

THE REDEMPTION OF TOM CHATHAM
BY GARNETT ELLIOTT

THE WORD FROM BTAP EDITOR DAVID CRANMER:

Finally, we have pirates at BEAT to a PULP! I put out the call for crews with cutlasses a few months ago and many of you delivered.

Once a staple of pulps, pirates seem to have fallen out of print. Well, the reboot of seafaring plunderers begins now. In our upcoming print anthology, Ian Parnham digs up some treasure with "Spot Marks The X" and here today the talented Garnett Elliott holds us captive with The Redemption of Tom Chatham.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Mr. Elliott lives and works in Tucson, Arizona. He's had work published in Plots with Guns, Thuglit, Out of the Gutter, A Twist of Noir, Darkest Before the Dawn, and Hardluck Stories, among others, and he's got a piece slated for the much-anticipated BEAT to a PULP print anthology coming out later this year.

GABRIEL HUNT NEWS!

GABRIEL HUNT NEWS!

FROM HARD CASE CRIME EDITOR CHARLES ARDAI . . .

Gabriel Hunt has spent the past five months recuperating from three of his most exhilarating adventures ever...but he's all rested now and ready to embark on his next: HUNT BEYOND THE FROZEN FIRE, co-authored by Edgar Award finalist (and Scribe Award winner) Christa Faust.

In this one, Gabriel returns from a grueling encounter in Transdniestria to find an emergency waiting for him at home: the daughter of scientist Lawrence Silver tells him her father has gone missing at a research site near the South Pole. But she thinks he may still be alive! So, it's off to Antarctica for Gabriel and two of his most capable allies, vehicular genius Rue Aparecido and man-mountain Maximillian Ventrose, Jr. (known as "Millie" to his friends). I can say with great confidence you will not be able to guess what they find when they arrive.

The book officially hits stores on March 30...but I wouldn't be surprised if some of them jumped the gun and put it out on their shelves a few days early. So keep your eye out -- or ask your favorite local bookseller to order you a copy now. (Or, heck, order one for yourself online, or by calling 1-800-481-9191. So many options!)

And to spice things up a bit, if you do get your hands on a copy before April 30 and e-mail us either a photo of yourself reading it or a copy of a review of the book you've posted somewhere online, we'll e-mail you back a pdf of the FIFTH book in the series, HUNT AMONG THE KILLERS OF MEN, co-authored by Hollywood screenwriter (and acclaimed novelist) David J. Schow!

So, you can get two brand new Hunt adventures in the next few weeks, one of them before anyone who isn't on this mailing list. Just e-mail your photo or review to:

postmaster@huntforadventure.com

The pdf will come by the electronic equivalent of return post.

And if you send a photo, please let us know if it's just for our enjoyment or if you'd be comfortable if we added it to the Rogues Gallery of Hunt readers on our Web site:

Hope to see you reading FROZEN FIRE soon!

THE HAZARDOUS PLAYERS ~ KNIGHTTIME!

THE HAZARDOUS PLAYERS ~ KNIGHTTIME!

JESSE WILLIS OVER AT SFF AUDIO TIPS US TO THIS HILARIOUS SUDIO OFFERING . . .

Knighttime is an “ongoing fantasy/humor adventure” audio drama series. Each week The Hazardous Players offer up a new chapter in the adventures of good Sir Cottington and Sir Bratwurst. They reluctantly stumble their way through the land of Udenland, while trying to avoid being eaten by any number of terrifying beasts. Along the way they meet several of the eccentric members of Udenland society who more often than not, prove a greater challenge than the terrifying beasts.

The voice acting in this show is actually pretty great, and there are some pretty fun jokes in there too.

All that Knighttime is missing, other than a blog feed, is a podcast feed! How can you have an audio drama series without a podcast feed? Crazy.

Quoth The Hazardous Players ~ “We, The Hazardous Players, have been building a fantasy adventure where we plan on constructing multiply narratives using various media: writing, audio performance and art, (eventually video), to create a story that is an expanding fantasy for children and adults. Though we realize this is a nontraditional approach to literature, we do see that this could be a unique way to tell a story, harkening back to the time of episodic adventures on the radio.”

FORGOTTEN BOOKS: JADE FOR A LADY!

FORGOTTEN BOOKS: JADE FOR A LADY!

M.E. CHABERS

They say you can’t judge a book by its cover, which is quite true. However, sometimes, you can’t judge a cover by the book it’s wrapped around. In the case of the Milo March novels by M.E. Chabers, the stunning paperback covers by Robert McGinnis are worth collecting no matter what text is contained within.

In the case of Chabers, the text is entertainingly pulpy, but eminently forgettable – a standard you might expect from an old time pulp writer who also created the Green Lama, a crime-fighting Buddhist superhero whose powers emerged upon the recitation of the Tibetan mantra, om mani padme hum.

Jade For A Lady was actually the twelfth Milo March novel, however, when the reprints bearing the beautiful McGinnis covers began appearing in the ‘70s, it bore the #1 logo designating it the first in the reprinted series. A lot of paperback original men’s adventure series were being successfully published at the time, all bearing their number in the series on the cover. Clearly, Paperback Library’s Milo March novels were trying to grab a share of that market.

The Milo March covers, with their James Coburn look-alike representing Milo March (does anyone know if Coburn was ever consulted or reimbursed for this blatant rip-off of his image), and their long limbed, come-hither-looking McGinnis women, contained the perfect blend of action and lurid promise to reel in ‘70s readers. Heck, they still reel me in today – so much better than the clip art, photo file, copycat state of today’s covers.

M.E. Chaber ( taken from the Hebrew word mechaber, meaning author) was one of the many pseudonyms of Kendall Foster Crossen (1910-1981), who created Milo March in the 1950s after years of prolific word spinning for the pulps, radio, and television.

March is a former OSS/CIA agent who has become an international, jet-setting, martini-drinking, poetry-quoting investigator for Intercontinental Insurance. Jade For A Lady is typical of the series in its breezy approach to both life and investigation, working almost as a ‘50s era man’s wish fulfillment featuring alcohol fueled male bonding, beautiful women, and professional success.

While somewhat dated today in this era of veneration for all things noir, desperate, and depraved, Jade For A Lady and the other Milo March novels are still a refreshing diversion.

THE BRITISH U.N.C.L.E. MINI-CON!

THE BRITISH U.N.C.L.E. MINI-CON!

AKA: THE ARUNDEL AFFAIR

The first Arundel Affair was held in 1997, and since then we have had twelve such events.

The name 'Arundel Affair' was coined by Norman Felton, Executive Producer of the U.N.C.L.E. series.

The conventions are small, extremely friendly get-togethers, where we spend a weekend immersing ourselves in our favourite TV programme.
We watch U.N.C.L.E. episodes, play the odd (U.N.C.L.E.-related) game, compete in the prize quiz and caption contest, listen to short talks given by other attendees, and watch other things the show's stars have done.

There is also plenty of time to chat and get to know everyone else – and as there are normally around 20-25 people, it is easy to chat to everyone there.
We usually have lots of memorabilia on display, a small sales table, lots of freebies and a raffle table.

The weekend has more of a 'houseparty' feel than the usual large conventions.

This is the place to meet other U.N.C.L.E. / RV / DMcC fans – and people come, on a regular basis, from all over England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Belgium and the USA.

Arundel was chosen as the venue for the conventions because of its ease of access. By rail, it is on the main line from London, Victoria Station, and takes approximately one hour and twenty minutes. London Gatwick Airport is less than an hour away by train. Again, this is a direct line.

The small town of Arundel is dominated by its castle and cathedral and is a popular tourist destination. And, finally, David McCallum was a frequent visitor when his parents were residents of the town!

Dates for the convention are March 6th and 7th 2010. It will be held at the Comfort Inn, Arundel.

Please note that because of the size and nature of the Arundel Affair, you must register before the deadline date given in the convention information. It is not possible to register at the door.

PULP CORNER: BROTHER BLOOD!

PULP CORNER: BROTHER BLOOD!

New Publisher Pulp 2.0 Press Officially Launches with Author Donald F. Glut's Lost Vampire Blaxploitation Novel BROTHER BLOOD

Company to specialize in quality pulp entertainment, reprinting rare classics and developing new properties in the classic pulp form for the Horror, Scifi and Action-Adventure audiences

Bill Cunningham, the Mad Pulp Bastard (yes, that's his job title) of new publishing label Pulp 2.0 Press today announced its premiere pulp novel release, Brother Blood from author Donald F. Glut (The Empire Strikes Back novelization, TV's Transformers, The X-Men and comics' The Occult Files of Doctor Spektor). Brother Blood is a horror "blaxploitation" novel set in 1969 Los Angeles in and around the world famous landmarks of the Sunset Strip. Sexy Preston Duval is a sinister vampire stalking the streets of Los Angeles, building a vampire army to take over the city.

"Brother Blood is an old school pulp novel that captures the tone of the sort of material we'll be publishing here at Pulp 2.0 Press," said Cunningham. "Besides being a piece of pure entertainment, Blood captures the feeling of the time - having been originally written in 1969, three years before Blacula - and is premiering in english and novel form. It was published previously in the 70's in an edited, magazine form in German. "

Brother Blood will be published and distributed worldwide through Createspace's (www.creatspace.com) print-on- demand service and Amazon.com with low-cost digital editions available later for Kindle and other e-readers. Each print edition will feature "Extras" containing behind-the-scenes information, articles, photo essays and other exclusive entertainment.

In addition to collectible print editions for all of their releases, Pulp 2.0 Press has launched a promotion program for each of their titles. Starting with Brother Blood each Pulp 2.0 title will also feature signed extremely limited edition cover proofs that will be available free to only five lucky readers who are the first ones to send in pictures with themselves holding the book. Winners will be posted on the company's Facebook page: www.facebook.com/pulp2ohpress

In addition to the signed cover proof promotions, each title will be supported with various types of merchandise geared toward fans - posters, t-shirts and branded novelty items. Quality pulp entertainment items that fans can easily acquire.

"The whole company came about because so many cool pulp and exploitation novels that I wanted to read had fallen out of print and were really hard to track down. I figured that if the only way I was going to be able to read these books in affordable editions was to publish them - then I would do that. I tracked Don (Glut) down and licensed several of his books - more of which we'll announce soon - and got underway."

Cunningham added, "Since that initial startup we've added several artists and writers to the mix as well as a web marketing manager. We've all signed on to the idea of creating the kind of books we as fans want to see and figuring the best way to make pulp fiction fans happy. As a youngster I remember the classic Famous Monsters magazine and how editor Forrest J. Ackerman used to get monster fans involved. Those fans eventually grew up to become the very professionals they were enamored with in the first place. You'll recognize some of the names: John Carpenter, Joe Dante and yes, Donald F. Glut.

Thanks to the internet and meeting fans at conventions we can do the same and connect them with quality genre entertainment more than ever before - hence, the name and the mission Pulp 2.0."

MARK HENRY

In Seattle's undead circles, Amanda Feral is one of the beautiful zombies. Of course, when you're socializing with werewolves, devils, and rampaging yetis, there's not that much competition. Still, Amanda has a stylish rep to maintain, which is getting tricky now that her tanking ad agency is obliterating her finances.

The fastest way to make some cash: appear on a new reality show, American Minions, hosted by lecherous wood nymph Johnny Birch. Classy? Maybe not, but a girl's gotta eat.

With zombie gal pal Wendy posing as her bitchy agent, Amanda settles in to "Minions Mansion," crowded with 24-7 video cameras and undead fame whores. When Johnny is found incinerated in a locked room, Amanda decides to channel her inner Miss Marple (minus the fugly cardigans) and find out who's responsible.

Was it Hairy Sue, the white trash stripper yeti? Tanesha, the glamorous trannie werewolf? Angie, the Filipino vampire with a detachable head? Unveiling the culprit in a heart-stopping finale won't just save the show from cancellation, it might just keep Amanda alive-or as close as a ghoul can get.

FREE LISTENING ~ SPELLWRIGHT BY BLAKE CHARLTON!

FREE LISTENING ~ SPELLWRIGHT BY BLAKE CHARLTON!

PER A DRIBBLE OF INK:

To celebrate today’s release of his debut novel, Blake Charlton, with the help of Mark D. Hines, has created an hour long (!!!) audiobook containing the prologue and first four chapters of Spellwright!

Imagine a world in which you could peel written words off a page and make them physically real. You might pick your teeth with a sentence fragment, protect yourself with defensive paragraphs, or thrust a sharply-worded sentence at an enemy’s throat.

Such a world is home to Nicodemus Weal, an apprentice at the wizardly academy of Starhaven. Because of how fast he can forge the magical runes that create spells, Nicodemus was thought to be the Halcyon, a powerful spellwright prophesied to prevent an event called the War of Disjunction, which would destroy all human language. There was only one problem: Nicodemus couldn’t spell.

Runes must be placed in the correct order to create a spell. Deviation results in a “misspell”—a flawed text that behaves in an erratic, sometimes lethal, manner. And Nicodemus has a disability, called cacography, that causes him to misspell texts simply by touching them.

Now twenty-five, Nicodemus lives in the aftermath of failing to fulfill prophecy. He finds solace only in reading knightly romances and in the teachings of Magister Shannon, an old blind wizard who’s left academic politics to care for Starhaven’s disabled students.

But when a powerful wizard is murdered with a misspell, Shannon and Nicodemus becomes the primary suspects. Proving their innocence becomes harder when the murderer begins killing male cacographers one by one…and all evidence suggests that Nicodemus will be next. Hunted by both investigators and a hidden killer, Shannon and Nicodemus must race to discover the truth about the murders, the nature of magic, and themselves.

Hines does a wonderful job reading, and gives readers neat look at a novel in a medium that’s close to the subject matter of the novel. Charlton’s novel is a fun romp that reminded me of my early days discovering fantasy, while at the same time playing with tropes and delivering a deliciously intricate magic system.

BY MISTY EVANS

Hotshot spies never die. They just slip undercover. Julia Torrison-codename Sheba-is keeping secrets. Seventeen months ago she was a CIA superagent, tracking down dangerous terrorists with her partner and lover, Conrad Flynn. A mission was blown, literally, when a bomb Julia built exploded early and Conrad died.
Yanked back to Langley and given a new identity, she is now the Counterterrorism Center's top analyst, spending her days at CIA headquarters and her nights in the bed of her boss. Her former life as a secret agent has been sealed off. Like her heart.

Conrad Flynn-codename Solomon-has his own secrets. For starters, he's not dead. Going under the deepest cover possible, he faked his death to save Julia's life. Now he must tear her life apart and ask her to help him hunt down a traitor: her new love.

Is Con a rogue agent or just a jealous ex-lover? To find out, Julia will have to enter a web of seduction and betrayal to play the spy game of her life using nothing more than her iPod-and her intuition.

Julia warns: "Beware of sexy spies bearing gifts. Trust no one and sleep with a gun under your pillow." Conrad warns: "Sex, lies and tantalizing suspense...don't worry, I'll protect you."

INTERNATIONAL CRIME CORNER: THE DOGS OF ROME

INTERNATIONAL CRIME CORNER: THE DOGS OF ROME

A COMMISSARIO ALEC BLUME NOVEL

CONOR FITZGERALD

Fitzgerald's impressively plotted debut, the first in a projected contemporary crime series, introduces police chief commissioner Alec Blume, an American expatriate who's been living in Rome for the last 22 years. Since losing both his parents—art historians who were shot and killed during a bank robbery on Via Cristoforo Colombo—as a teenager, Blume has been a loner of sorts, the proverbial outsider.

When someone brutally murders Arturo Clemente, a prominent politician's husband and an animal rights activist who recently exposed a dog-fighting ring, in Clemente's apartment, the flawed but endearing Blume uses his unique perspective to negotiate his way through a labyrinthine minefield that includes crooked cops, unscrupulous politicians, and an ancient city whose very history is steeped in the corruption associated with organized crime. Those who like gritty crime thrillers with a European flair will be well rewarded.

BETHANY MAINES

Q: What do you get when you cross Avon Ladies with Charlie's Angels?

A: A world-class intelligence organization run by women who really know their foundation.

When Nikki Lanier signs up as a cosmetics rep at Carrie Mae, it's hardly her idea of a dream job. With a degree in linguistics and a hard-core workout regimen, the twenty-six-year-old redhead once had hopes for a real career. But unemployed and desperate to escape life at home with her nagging mother, she'll try anything—even selling makeup to housewives. Soon, Nikki learns that the powder and lipstick are simply cover-up for the Carrie Mae Foundation: a secret organization of international espionage and high-tech mascara founded for the purpose of “helping women everywhere.”

Whisked off to Thailand with the legendary Carrie Mae agent Val Robinson, Nikki is soon in over her head. Between investigating the abduction of a human rights activist, tracking down a murderous arms dealer, keeping up with her wildly dangerous new partner, and occasionally trying to date a hunk who may or may not be CIA, Nikki has to use all the courage and cosmetic technology she's got to bring down the bad guys and get out alive.

With the support of the colorful Carrie Mae crew, Nikki will overcome even the most harrowing obstacles—including incessant phone calls from her mother—or die trying.

FANTASY CORNER: THE DEAD TRAVEL FAST

DEANNA RAYBOURN

A husband, a family, a comfortable life: Theodora Lestrange lives in terror of it all.

With a modest inheritance and the three gowns that comprise her entire wardrobe, Theodora leaves Edinburgh—and a disappointed suitor—far behind. She is bound for Rumania, where tales of vampires are still whispered, to visit an old friend and write the book that will bring her true independence.

She arrives at a magnificent, decaying castle in the Carpathians, replete with eccentric inhabitants: the ailing dowager; the troubled steward; her own fearful friend, Cosmina. But all are outstripped in dark glamour by the castle's master, Count Andrei Dragulescu.

Bewildering and bewitching in equal measure, the brooding nobleman ignites Theodora's imagination and awakens passions in her that she can neither deny nor conceal. His allure is superlative, his dominion over the superstitious town, absolute—Theodora may simply be one more person under his sway.

Before her sojourn is ended—or her novel completed—Theodora will have encountered things as strange and terrible as they are seductive. For obsession can prove fatal…and she is in danger of falling prey to more than desire.

FANTASY CORNER: WARRIORS!

FANTASY CORNER: WARRIORS!

From George R. R. Martin’s Introduction to Warriors:

“People have been telling stories about warriors for as long as they have been telling stories. Since Homer first sang the wrath of Achilles and the ancient Sumerians set down their tales of Gilgamesh, warriors, soldiers, and fighters have fascinated us; they are a part of every culture, every literary tradition, every genre. All Quiet on the Western Front, From Here to Eternity, and The Red Badge of Courage have become part of our literary canon, taught in classrooms all around the country and the world. Our contributors make up an all-star lineup of award-winning and bestselling writers, representing a dozen different publishers and as many genres.

We asked each of them for the same thing—a story about a warrior. Some chose to write in the genre they’re best known for. Some decided to try something different. You will find warriors of every shape, size, and color in these pages, warriors from every epoch of human history, from yesterday and today and tomorrow, and from worlds that never were. Some of the stories will make you sad, some will make you laugh, and many will keep you on the edge of your seat.”

Included are a long novella from the world of Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin, a new tale of Lord John by Diana Gabaldon, and an epic of humanity at bay by David Weber. Also present are original tales by David Ball, Peter S. Beagle, Lawrence Block, Gardner Dozois, Joe Haldeman, Robin Hobb, Cecelia Holland, Joe R. Lansdale, David Morrell, Naomi Novik, James Rollins, Steven Saylor, Robert Silverberg, S.M. Stirling, Carrie Vaughn, Howard Waldrop, and Tad Williams.

Many of these writers are bestsellers. All of them are storytellers of the highest quality. Together they make a volume of unforgettable reading.
