THE MUSIC OF THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN!
All month long TCM has been celebrating the 100th birthday of Akira Kurosawa and playing many of the director’s best films. On Sunday TCM will also be showing one of my favorite westerns, John Sturges’ THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN (1960) which happens to be based on Kurosawa’s classic THE SEVEN SAMURAI (1954). If you haven’t had the opportunity to see THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN it’s a great time to catch up with this entertaining movie.

The series ran for 6 seasons on ABC from October 1958 through February 1964. The show personified cool, from the catchy theme song to the ruggedly handsome detectives – played by Efrem Zimbalist Jr. and Roger Smith. Former government agents, they freelanced as private detectives from their stylish offices located between La Cienega and Alta Loma. Though the address doesn’t really exist, the headquarters sat next to the Dean Martin’s nightclub, Dino’s.
The detectives' cars were retrieved by Kookie Kookson (played by Edd Byrnes), a hip valet parking attendant who became a cultural phenomenon and had every kid copying his trademark move of running a comb through his hair.
The series was based on novels and short stories written by producer Roy Huggins, who introduced the character of Stu Bailey in his 1946 novel The Double Take. Huggins, of course, would go on to develop and produce several crime dramas, including The Rockford Files.
WHILE THIS COULD BE COOL, ESPECIALLY IF THE PLAN TO PRODUCE THE FEATURE AS A PERIOD PIECE HOLDS UP, BUT ARE THERE REALLY NO FRESH IDEAS FOR HOLLYWOOD TO TAKE A CHANCE ON – OR IS CHANCE JUST ANOTHER DIRTY WORD IN HOLLYWOOD?
