FANTASY CORNER: AMAZON INK!

FANTASY CORNER: AMAZON INK!

LORI DEVOTI

Meet Mel: Business owner. Dedicated mom. Natural-born Amazon.

It's been ten years since Melanippe Saka left the Amazon tribe in order to create a normal life for her daughter, Harmony. True, running a tattoo parlor in Madison, Wisconsin, while living with your Amazon warrior mother and priestess grandmother is not everyone's idea of normal, but Mel thinks she's succeeded at blending in as human.

Turns out she's wrong. Someone knows all about her, someone who's targeting young Amazon girls, and no way is Mel going to let Harmony become tangled in this deadly web. With her mother love in overdrive, Ms. Melanippe Saka is quite a force...even when she's facing a barrage of distractions -- including a persistent detective whose interest in Mel goes beyond professional, a sexy tattoo artist with secrets of his own, and a seriously angry Amazon queen who views Mel as a prime suspect.

To find answers, Mel will have to do the one thing she swore she'd never do: embrace her powers and admit that you can take the girl out of the tribe...but you can't take the tribe out of the girl.

AMAZON QUEEN

Being an Amazon ruler just became a royal pain.Amazon queen Zery Kostovska has never questioned tribe traditions. After all, these rules have kept the tribe strong for millennia and enabled them to live undetected, even in modern-day America. Zery is tough, fair, commanding—the perfect Amazon leader. At least, she was. A new high priestess with a penchant for secrecy and technology is threatening Zery’s rule. Plus, with the discovery of the Amazon sons, males with the same skills as their female counterparts, even Zery can’t deny that the tribe must change. But how? Some want to cooperate with the sons.

Others believe brutal new leadership is needed—and are willing to kill to make it happen.Once, Zery’s word was law. Now, she has no idea who to trust, especially with one powerful Amazon son making her question all her instincts.

For Zery, tribe comes first, but the battle drawing near is unlike any she’s faced before . . . and losing might cost her both the tribe and her life.

What happens when your past catches up with you and you don’t like what you see?

A powerful novel that questions how we take responsibility for our actions

Will Hodges’ life is a mess! His mother is dead, he has no friends and he thinks he is being followed by a strange group of people who tell him they know him. But Will can’t remember them . . . at first. And when he does, he doesn’t like what he can remember.

While Will is struggling with unsettling memories, he learns that his past is a lot deeper than many people’s, and he has to find out if he is strong enough to break links with the powerful hold that history has on him.

This compelling novel, set in an alternate future, challenges readers to consider the role we all have to play in making our society, and asks how much we are prepared to stand up for what’s right.

NOIR CORNER: PETER GUNN VS. MIKE SHANE!

IN A TV NOIR FACE OFF, PATRICK MURTHA SETS THE SCENE . . .

I decided to approach this week’s TV Noir of the Week in a different manner than usual. Instead of looking in depth at one episode of a show or one installment of an anthology, I will compare the general qualities of two similar shows that were broadcast in the same time-frame. Despite their similarities on many points, Peter Gunn (1958-1961) strikes me as more noir than Michael Shayne (1960-1961), and I would like to explore why in a non-scientific, impressionistic way (I’m not licensed to use the Noir-o-meter!).

MELJEAN BROOK

STEAMPUNK ROMANCE? WHO KNEW?

After the Iron Duke freed England from Horde control, he instantly became a national hero. Now Rhys Trahaearn has built a merchant empire on the power — and fear — of his name. And when a dead body is dropped from an airship onto his doorstep, bringing Detective Inspector Mina Wentworth into his dangerous world, he intends to make her his next possession.

Mina can’t afford his interest, however. Horde blood runs through her veins, and despite the nanotech enhancing her body, she barely scratches out a living in London society. Becoming Rhys’s lover would destroy both her career and her family, yet the investigation prevents her from avoiding him…and the Iron Duke’s ruthless pursuit makes him difficult to resist.

But when Mina uncovers the victim’s identity, she stumbles upon a conspiracy that threatens the lives of everyone in England. To save them, Mina and Rhys must race across zombie-infested wastelands and treacherous oceans — and Mina discovers the danger is not only to her countrymen as she finds herself tempted to give up everything to the Iron Duke.

‘TIS AUTUMN: THE SEARCH FOR JACKIE PARIS!

‘TIS AUTUMN: THE SEARCH FOR JACKIE PARIS!

A FILM BY RAYMOND DE FELITTA

NOW ON DVD

In 1991, Raymond De Felitta was listening to a Jazz station and heard a singer by the name of Jackie Paris. Entranced by his style and technique, De Felitta began researching Paris. He learned Paris had opened for Lenny Bruce, that his voice was admired by among others, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat Cole and Sarah Vaughn. However, his research abruptly ended when he read in The Biographical Dictionary of American Music, that Paris had died in 1977. De Felitta thought that was the end of the story but one night in March of 2004, he was reading the New Yorker Magazine and saw an advertisement listing Paris' comeback at the Jazz Standard. Stunned, he wondered where had Paris been all these years, what had come of his life and why had a singer of this talent fallen into such obscurity.

‘Tis Autumn - The Search For Jackie Paris is not just a documentary about a great but unheralded jazz singer. It’s a film that explores the very nature of what it is to live the life of an artist--any artist. Filmmaker Raymond De Felitta examines the life of cult favorite jazz singer Jackie Paris, but at the same time he might as well be exploring the life of any artist in any discipline, too many of whom share the same fate that Paris did; the explosive debut followed by the years of ups and downs, the constant hope that success, though out of reach, is around the corner, the private tragedies that grow out of artistic frustration, and the final, self-inflicted wounds which all too often cause the once promising to descend into bitterness and chaos, a prelude to vanishing completely.

Working with rare found footage and new interviews with jazz legends such as Billy Taylor, George Wein, Mark Murphy and Ruth Price, as well as the final concert footage and last interviews Jackie Paris ever gave –- De Felitta constructs an emotional mystery story which asks the question, who or what is to blame when a great talent goes from sensation to footnote during their life span?

PEGGY LEE ~ TWO SHOWS NIGHTLY / LET’S LOVE

PEGGY LEE ~ TWO SHOWS NIGHTLY / LET’S LOVE

RELEASED JANUARY 26 FROM COLLECTORS’ CHOICE REISSUES

TWO SHOWS NIGHTLY

Perhaps the most famous album in the Peggy Lee canon is one that few people have ever heard! Culled from three nights of a three week April run at New York's Copacabana in 1968, during which Lee played two shows per night (and three on Saturday), blending in contemporary songs with old favorites to rave reviews. "Two Shows Nightly" was pressed and ready to go to retail when Lee, unhappy with the original mix (she was notoriously picky about the sound on her recordings), pulled the release on the eve of its street date.

That set off a four decade-long collector feeding frenzy that persists to this day, as the very few promo copies of this album that have surfaced go for hefty sums.

Now, over forty years later, the Peggy Lee estate has consented to Collector's Choice Music releasing a remastered version of the long-lost album—and, not only that, they're allowing a dozen bonus tracks! The CD includes, from the original album, 'Do I Hear a Waltz; By the Time I Get to Phoenix; Reason to Believe; Didn't Want to Have to Do It; Personal Property; Hand on the Plow; Until It's Time for You to Go; Something Stupid; What Is a Woman; Alright, Okay, You Win; Here's to You', and 'Come Back to Me'.

Bonus tracks include the unreleased 'Money' and 'I Wound It Up' as well as the rare single sides 'Stay with Me; Happy Feet; That Man; I Feel It; The Lonesome Road; Misty Roses; It'll Never Happen Again; Reason to Believe', and 'Didn't Want to Have to Do It', as well as the obscure 'Make Believe'. New liner notes from Peggy Lee discographer Ivan Santiago tell the fascinating story behind this release. It's the pop vocal collector find of the year and a 'Collectors' Choice Music' exclusive.

LET'S LOVE

In this year of all things Beatles, it made sense to reissue the album that saw Peggy Lee join forces with Paul McCartney. The story goes like this: In early 1974, Peggy had Paul and Linda McCartney over for dinner, and instead of bringing flowers or wine, the ex- Beatle brought a song written specifically for her, 'Let's Love'! Thus was this album project born, Lee's first for Atlantic after her long stint at Capitol.

And, as befits an album recorded for one of the great R&B labels, Lee took a more soulful tack than usual, tackling material like the gospelly toe-tapper 'Sweet Lov'liness', the samba-styled 'Sweet Talk' and a funky version of Irving Berlin's classic 'Always'. That's Paul McCartney producing and playing piano on the title cut, too.

Lee also tackles 1970s singer-songwriter selections such as James Taylor's "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight" and Melissa Manchester's "He Is The One" as well as her collaboration with Dave Grusin (the album's co-producer) "The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter." Also included are Easy Evil; You Make Me Feel Brand New' and 'Sometimes'. Jim Ritz's notes tell the story of this most fortuitous marriage in another 'Collectors' Choice Music' exclusive.

The Blades of the Rose are sworn to protect the sources of magic in the world. But the work is dangerous—and they can’t always protect their own . . .

IN HOTTER WATER . . .

KELLY’S LOUNGE SOUNZ BRINGS US THIS COOL DOWNLOAD FROM 1956 . . .

Though a singer of uncommon emotional depth, Beverly Kenney could also cut loose with the best of them, and this album, "Come Swing with Me", captures an effervescence and playfulness often absent from her later, more renowned sessions. Paired with arranger Ralph Burns, who likewise sidesteps his usual subtle refinement for a lighter, more lively approach, Kenney retains the thoughtful phrasing and sultry demeanor that are her signatures, but it's a pleasure to hear her tackle material like "You Make Me Feel So Young" and "You Go to My Head" with such unabashed gusto. ~ Jason Ankeny

SINATRA/JOBIM: THE COMPLETE REPRISE RECORDINGS!

SINATRA/JOBIM: THE COMPLETE REPRISE RECORDINGS!

COMING MAY 4 ON CONCORD RECORDS

TWENTY-SONG SET CONTAINS THE COMPLETE 1967 FRANCIS ALBERT SINATRA & ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM ALBUM PLUS ALL 10 SONGS FROM ITS INTENDED 1969 FOLLOW-UP, SINATRA/JOBIM

In 1967, Frank Sinatra teamed up with Brazilian singer, pianist, guitarist, composer and songwriter Antonio Carlos Jobim to record an album that married the Chairman’s signature vocals with rhythms from the master of bossa nova. The resulting album, Francis Albert Sinatra/Antonio Carlos Jobim, reached #19, remaining on Billboard’s rock-dominated album chart for 28 weeks.

Forty-four years later, on May 4, 2010, Concord Music Group, on license from Frank Sinatra Enterprises (FSE), will release a deluxe reissue of the Sinatra/Jobim classic including all ten songs from the original album plus seven songs from a subsequent collaboration between the two, and three songs from that session that were not released until decades later, when they were included in a box set. Sinatra/Jobim: The Complete Reprise Recordings features digital remastering and expanded liner notes by Stan Cornyn, longtime head of creative services at Warner/Reprise and author of the book about the Warner Music Group, Exploding.

Sinatra and Jobim gathered at Hollywood’s Western Recorders for three nights, January 30 through February 1, 1967. Jobim brought the beat in the form of bossa nova percussionists and arrangers. Sinatra supplied the producer (Sonny Burke), the string arranger/conductor (Claus Ogerman) and the rest of the orchestra. The resulting session produced ten songs including the classic “The Girl From Impanema” plus “Dindi,” “How Insensitive [Insensatez],” “Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars” and six others. (After bidding até a vista to Jobim, Sinatra, on the high of making one of his finest albums ever, stayed at the studio to record a duet with daughter Nancy that would reach #1 on the charts, “Something Stupid.”)

Two years later, Sinatra and Jobim returned to Western Recorders to record ten more bossa novas for a shorter-titled follow-up: Sinatra-Jobim. Replacing Ogerman was a 26-year-old long-haired arranger named Eumir Deodato (later to be known for his 1973 jazz version of Richard Strauss’ “Also Sprach Zarathustra [2001]”). The songs were all written or co-written by Jobim, many with unusual melodic twists. Producer Burke enlisted conductor Morris Stoloff to ensure a pop feel to the session.

After three nights, the album was wrapped, and was readied for release in the fall of 1969. The eight-track version of the album had shipped when the call was placed to Warner/Reprise’s Burbank, Calif. offices. It was Sinatra, demanding that the label “kill the album,” so Warner recalled most of the recordings. A 2005 Goldmine story reported that the rare eight-track would command $5000.

Sinatra later agreed to permit Reprise to release seven of the Sinatra-Jobim vocal tracks on the album Sinatra & Company. It reached #73 and remained on the album chart for 15 weeks in 1971.

More than 40 years later, the airport in Rio has been named Antonio Carlos Jobim International. And an American postage stamp honored Frank Sinatra. And the Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim and Sinatra-Jobim albums have been combined to form Concord’s Sinatra/Jobim: The Complete Reprise Recordings set.

KICKSTART ATHENA VOLTAIRE!

KICKSTART ATHENA VOLTAIRE!

I'M NEW TO THIS WHOLE KICKSTART CONCEPT, SO I THINK IT'LL BE EASIER TO JUST QUOTE ATHENA VOLTAIRE CREATOR STEVE BRYANT ON THIS ONE . . .

"For the past few years, I've been working on AV in my downtime. Along the way, the comic earned an Eisner Award nomination (2005, Best Digital Comic), released two trade paperbacks and earned me a nomination for the Russ Manning Most Promising Newcomer Award. I'm grateful for the reception of the book and the supporters we've had along the way."

"I'm appreciative of every fan I meet at a convention or every email I receive from a reader who wonders when the next mini-series is going to be released. And I hate to tell them, lamely, that I'm working on it and I hope to release it soon."

"That's the downside to producing something that's a labor of love—it always takes a back seat to paying work. Don't get me wrong—I'm not complaining or asking for sympathy—it's just frustrating to not be able to give someone a definitive timetable for the next mini-series' release."

"Instead of doing the same thing over and over (and getting the same results), I'm trying something different. I've started a Kickstarter campaign for our favorite globetrotting aviatrix. Kickstarter is a terrific site where creative folks can get funding for their projects by offering special incentives (like original art, deluxe editions of books, etc) to folks who pledge their support. Think of it like PBS, but instead of tote bags, you can get an AV cover, interior page, a sketch from me, and more!"

ATHENA VOLTAIRE IS ONE THE BEST PULP CHARACTERS CREATED IN RECENT YEARS, AND BRYANT IS OFFERING SOME PRETTY GREAT INCENTIVES FOR YOUR MONEY.
