CONTACT SHOTS ARE BAD LIKE THAT

DEREK KELLY

"Do not think God will intervene on your behalf," I say. A snarl. "He might not like me per se, but I have noticed He stays out of my way. God is in all things but not this street alley. Not tonight."

He starts crying again, his shame surfacing. Our every word a cloud of ice dying in the freezing, rank air. Every one of those clouds containing secrets.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Derek Kelly was born and raised in the Midwest. He is prior military. "Contact Shots Are Bad Like That" is the first chapter from a Richard Dean Buckner novel being shopped around later in the year. Derek has been published under the name Ryan Sayles at shortstory.us.com, eskimopie.net, Heroin Love Songs volume 7, Powder Burn Flash, SNM Horror Magazine and Nefarious Muse. One of his stories at shortstory.us.com has been chosen to be included their upcoming eBook collection, and his story in SNM Horror Magazine has been selected to appear in their anthology Bonded By Blood III, available later in 2010.

THE HITTITE COMES HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FROM TWO SOURCES THAT I TRUST AND ARE USUALLY SUITED TO MY ECLECTIC TASTES . . .

This is the tale of Lukka, the Hittite soldier who traveled across Greece in search of the vicious slave traders who kidnapped his wife and sons. He tracks them all the way to war-torn Troy. There he proves himself a warrior to rank with noble Hector and swift Achilles.

Lukka is the man who built the Trojan horse for crafty Odysseus, who toppled the walls of Jericho for the Isrealites, who stole beautiful Helen--the legendary face that launched a thousand ships--from her husband Menaleus after the fall of Troy and fought his way across half the known world to bring her safely to Egypt.

STARK/COOKE ~ THE MAN WITH THE GETAWAY FACE!

STARK/COOKE ~ THE MAN WITH THE GETAWAY FACE!

IDW Publishing and award-winning creator Darwyn Cooke are pleased to announce an exclusive prelude to The Outfit, the second of Richard Stark's Parker novels that Cooke is adapting. Cooke's initial Parker release, The Hunter, has been a critical and popular success, appearing on over 50 "best of the year" lists as well as the New York Times best-seller list.

Titled The Man With the Getaway Face: A Prelude to the Outfit, a limited number of copies will debut next week in San Francisco at WonderCon, one of the country's leading comics and pop culture conventions. This 8"x12" preview book offers one entire chapter of The Outfit and will be included in the finished graphic novel, coming in October. Available for the bargain price of $2.00, the prelude will offer fans a beautiful introduction to The Outfit. Cooke, a special guest of WonderCon, will be on hand to sign copies at the IDW booth #519. WonderCon will be held April 2nd through the 4th at the Moscone Center.

"The Man with the Getaway Face special is a fun and inexpensive way for new readers to check out Richard Stark's famous master criminal," commented Cooke. "It's our hope that this oversized, underpriced kidney punch will pull them in to the violent world of Parker."

In addition to debuting at WonderCon, the preview will be available in comic stores everywhere in July at the same low price and large size. Retailers should check the IDW section of the Diamond May Previews catalogue for details.

"We wanted to do something to make this preview special, something to make Darwyn's incredible work really pop off the shelves," said IDW Special Projects Editor, Scott Dunbier. "And at this size and price point, I think we've succeeded!"

MYSTERY CORNER: WATER HAZARD!

MYSTERY CORNER: WATER HAZARD!

DON DAHLER

I ALMOST MISSED THE PUBLICATION OF THIS SECOND IN THE SERIES, PROBABLY DUE TO THE TOTAL LACK OF PROMOTION BY MACMILLAN. I READ AND ENJOYED THE FIRST IN THE SERIES, A TIGHT LIE, DESPITE SOME UNEVEN PATCHES AND THE TRADITIONAL SPORTS MYSTERY CURSE OF BEING NEITHER FISH NOR FOUL (SPORTS NOVEL OR MYSTERY NOVEL). STILL, I WAS HAPPY TO SEE THIS ON THE SHELF OF MY LOCAL BRICK AND MORTAR TODAY AND LAID OUT ONE OF MY HEAVILY HOARDED GIFT CARDS.

The follow-up to the critically acclaimed A Tight Lie – a darkly funny, fast-talking mystery with a dash of sports and no shortage of action.

Golf is a game of consistency, and after too many missed fairways, missed putts, and missed cuts, Huck Doyle’s career as a Tour pro is on life support. The sometime private eye has lost his full-time PGA player status and is back to scraping it out on minor tournaments. So it’s only by the generosity of the father of an old law-school pal, Rick Wong, that Huck finds himself in paradise with a rare sponsor’s exemption, gearing up to play in the Sony Open in Hawaii. But when his benefactor keels over dead from a gunshot during a practice round, Huck is obligated to find out who killed the millionaire banker and pillar of the community. Is it the young wife? A competitor trying to stop a secret bank merger? Or was it an assassination ordered from some distant shores?

With his brother undergoing an experimental spinal-cord treatment and his relationship with a beautiful medical examiner showing some strain, Huck has more than enough on his mind as he tees off in a career-changing match. As the investigation carries him into the murky waters of international finance, computer encryptions, and the dark side of paradise, Huck finds himself playing the game of his life, on and off the golf course.

In the footsteps of Tim Green and Mike Lupica, Don Dahler has once again written a riveting mystery that brings the world of sports into crime fiction. Water Hazard will satisfy thriller readers and golf fanatics alike.

NOIR CORNER: BLUES AND TROUBLE!

NOIR CORNER: BLUES AND TROUBLE!

TOM PIAZZA

In "Burn Me Up," the most effective of the 12 achingly moody stories in this virtuoso collection, Memphis city councilman Archie Lucas recalls the spring of 1948, when he felt "a sense of longing and possibility mixed with a strange directionlessness." His ennui is later shattered by the rock-and-roll voice of Billy Sundown on the radio. Raunchy Billy is Archie's former schoolmate, and his Jerry Lee Lewis-style fame and troubles have propelled him into a peripatetic world of backwater lounges. The painful counterpoint of these two lives resounds through this and other pieces that contrast pure-on-the-road blues and frustratingly settled existences.

Set in motion by the soul-sapping "Brownsville," in which the narrator sits alone in a steamy New Orleans bar and vows to quit running when he gets to dusty Brownsville, a town he has chosen "because I've got no reason to go there," these stories are sequenced in perfect call-and-response rhythm.

Piazza has found the common American experience in the attachment-detachment struggle. Ranging from New York City to coastal Texas to Santa Monica, and crisscrossing through Memphis, he draws into his edgy cosmology characters from disparate segments of our population, what Stanley Crouch in his introduction calls "so many out-of-tune lives": the diaspora Jew trapped in the commuter ethos ("A Servant of Culture") as well as the Tennessee trucker who can't act "right" in sedate Ohio society ("Memphis"). If there is a flaw here, it is that women are depicted only as speed bumps that throw men off course.

Told in a clear tenor voice, Piazza's first collection is as wonderfully dislocating as an all-night drive. Piazza is a recipient of a 1995-96 James Michener Award.

BICYCLE LOVE: STORIES OF PASSION, JOY, AND SWEAT!

BICYCLE LOVE: STORIES OF PASSION, JOY, AND SWEAT!

EDITOR: GARTH BATTISTA

All athletes love their sports, but cycling has a fetishistic side to it-the love of this deceptively simple machine that allows you to silently float, race and climb. These 50 essays on the many varieties of bicycle love range from dreamy reminiscences of childhood bikes to powerful, sometimes insane adult attachments to mountain bikes, road bikes and tandems.

They all celebrate the freedom of cycling, the elegance of the machine and the beauty of the act. The characters are everyone from a teenage girl on a moun-tain bike to old men crossing the country on touring bikes to couples falling in love while cycling. Funny, revealing and intensely emotional, these stories show the secret inner life of every cyclist.

ZBS: AUDIO STORIES!

ZBS: AUDIO STORIES!

ZBS is a not-for-profit arts organization. We have been in existence since 1970. For 35 years we've been producing radio/audio stories. These are comic and cosmic adventures, science fiction, mystical mysteries - some with spiritual wisdoms woven within. Our intention has always been to raise consciousness by using the media, radio and audio. Of course, some of these stories are just down right fun, fine family entertainment. Laughter is a great healer, as you know. We're all living in the Cosmic Joke, and one day we may actually "get" the punch line. But in the meantime, remember, kindness to others, people, plants, animals, even the earth and the clouds, we can all do. It makes us feel better, it probably even makes the clouds feel better. We hope you enjoy our stories.

FORGOTTEN BOOKS: HELLER ~ THE OIL RIG!

FORGOTTEN BOOKS: HELLER ~ THE OIL RIG!

FRANK RODERUS

Better known for his long list of westerns, Frank Roderus jumped into the mystery field in the mid-eighties with this series featuring Carl Heller “a great hero from the great outdoors” – so, a sort of white water rafting, rock climbing, horseback riding, rodeo-roping, off-roading Travis McGee.

These were lightweight, but enjoyable mysteries (told in the first person)with a cool main character with whom it was fun to spend time – sort of Spenser-light.

And therein lies the biggest problem with the series; Heller is not quite Travis McGee, not quite Spenser, and so not quite an original or strong enough character in his own right to be truly memorable.

HELLER #1: THE OIL RIG

MEET CARL HELLER – A maverick son of the new West, Heller’s a man you can turn to when your life’s in danger – if you can get him off his butt. Born in the Colorado high country, he’s a part-time rancher and a full-time drinker who savors a laid-back approach to living. But Heller’s also a law school dropout with a head for justice that’s as hard as the Rockies and a mile-wide stubborn streak. So, he hires out to the hopeless cases, hurtling into action when some big guy is putting the squeeze on a little guy – or gal. Whether he’s tracking down a murderer, out hustling a high-tech con man, biking in the wilderness or falling for a lady’s charms, Heller fights hard and plays harder. Wise-talking, quick-thinking, with a body that can absorb – a dish out – a lot of punishment: that’s the combination that’s kept Carl Heller alive. So far.

THE OIL RIG – It was just supposed to be a simple oil and mineral sting run by a bunch of sharp Easterners against some of the locals. But then the boys from the East goy ugly. One man lay dead, and several others were facing ruin, Until Heller stung back – with a vengeance.

The Heller series is actually a cut above many of it’s paperback original contemporaries, and worth seeking out for those days after you’ve read (and re-read) all your Travis McGees and Spensers. Plus, the uniform covers of the first five in the series a very cool . . .

PULP CENTRAL: THE GREEN GHOST!

PULP CENTRAL: THE GREEN GHOST!

HERE’S EXCITING NEWS FROM WIN SCOTT ECKERT . . .

It's not easy being Green...

No, not Moonstone Books' The Green Hornet Chronicles, which I am happily co-editing with Joe Gentile...

...But the Green Ghost! (Originally just called The Ghost in his initial pulp appearances...) That's right, kids, the Green Ghost is coming to comics and Moonstone's got him.

Before the war, when the GREEN GHOST-master magician and criminologist George Chance-ventured into the night, with his horrific skull-like appearance and his seemingly supernatural abilities, evildoers quaked at the prospect of tangling with him.

But the war in Europe changed him...he witnessed the depths of evil, and now combats it with an intensity that makes his pre-war exploits look like a lark. To this point, though, Geaorge Chance has battled only human depravity and is a skeptic at heart. Can he hold his own against the real supernatural menaces?

SMOKER: A BOXING FABLE!

SMOKER: A BOXING FABLE!

MEL ODOM

Those of you who are regular Bish’s Beat readers know I have a soft spot for well written, pulp-style, boxing stories. Now, prolific writer Mel Odom has just e-published his second novella using the Kindle platform and it’s a doozy of a two fisted tale. SMOKER: A BOXING FABLE retails for $1.99 via Amazon.

Set in 1952, it’s a story of revenge as young merchant seaman Terry Farrell goes after the men that murdered his father in an illegal underground boxing match called a “smoker.”

Odom claims it is one of the favorite stories he ever wrote.

HERE’S THE OPENING . . .

1952

When the Malaysian stopped heckling the young waitress and upped the ante by grabbing her, I tossed the pair of Jacks and deuces I’d been holding onto the ratty tablecloth and pushed my chair back. The docks of Singapore were some of the most dangerous in that part of the world, and if the police came at all they’d be too late to help the woman.

Tipper’s was a sailor’s bar and had a reputation as a bad place to be. The only d├ęcor consisted of American movie posters of Bogart, Edward G. Robinson, Errol Flynn, Rita Hayworth and a half dozen others on the smoke-stained walls. Bottled beer sat at room temperature behind the scarred bar and everybody paid to drink from the house bottle. Night draped the room and left heavy shadows that felt cottony from tobacco smoke. I’d stayed past the sundown curfew I’d promised myself I’d stick to.

The sandy-haired British seaman to my left glanced at me casually. A tattoo of an island girl in a grass skirt with bared breasts decorated his left forearm. He spoke in soft warning. He was fortyish and spoke softly, belying his rough exterior and the oily smudges on his weathered face and scarred arms. “This isn’t any of your concern, Yank. Let it go.”

The young waitress struggled against her captor. I guessed that she was sixteen or seventeen. The Malay sailor laughed as he held the woman and ran his free hand over her. He bumped up against his prisoner obscenely.

“Can’t,” I said. Part of that decision was mine, but a lot of it had to do with the way my old man had raised me.
