ESPIONAGE CENTRAL: I, SPY?

ESPIONAGE CENTRAL: I, SPY?

KATE JOHNSON

THE SPY NOVEL AS CHICK-LIT . . .

Never underestimate the blonde. "The British spy is elegant, suave and sophisticated. The British spy is not blonde, built and confused."

But Sophie Green is, and she's just been hired by a highly secret government agency. She drives a car the colour of bile and is obsessed with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She doesn't know which end of the gun to fire from and her hair hasn't been natural since she was twelve. But that's not going to stop her from trying to save the day, once she figures out who to save it from.

Sexy spies, plane crashes, firebombs and multicoloured cocktails-they're all in a day's work for Sophie. Roll over, Bond, there's a new bombshell in town. And it's got Sophie's name on it...

Warning, this title contains guns, swearing, dark thoughts about cheerful people, incomprehensible Britishisms, and painful sarcasm.

PARANORMAL CORNER: A DEVIL IN THE DETAILS!

PARANORMAL CORNER: A DEVIL IN THE DETAILS!

A JESSE JAMES DAWSON NOVEL

K.A. STEWART

Jesse James Dawson was an ordinary guy (well, an ordinary guy with a black belt in karate), until the day he learned his brother had made a bargain with a demon. Jesse discovered there was only one way to save his brother: put up his own soul as collateral, and fight the demon to the death.

Jesse lived to free his brother--and became part of a loose organization of Champions who put their own souls on the line to help those who get in over their heads with demons. But now experienced Champions are losing battles at a much higher rate than usual. Someone has changed the game. And if Jesse can't figure out the new rules, his next battle may be his last...

PULP NOW: INTERNECINE!

PULP NOW: INTERNECINE!

DAVID J. SCHOW

“Smart, scathing, and verbally inventive to an astonishing degree, David J. Schow is one of the most interesting writers of his generation.”

— Peter Straub

“Inter-what?” When advertising executive Conrad Maddox returns from a redeye flight and finds a mysterious locker key waiting in his rental car, he discovers a briefcase loaded with guns and money. Several hours later, his entire life tumbles down a rabbit hole when he meets Dandine, owner of the case and former contract assassin for a shadowy organization called Norco, which is now out to nail both of them.

“Internecine” means conflict, mutual destruction, and slaughter—or, as Dandine tells Conrad, they are now inadvertently at play in a field of “terrorism, counter-assassination, military coups, dirty tricks, Watergate, spy vs. spy, murky secret organizations, that sort of thing.” A world in which being innocent can’t save you, the police can’t help you, and your only hope of getting out alive is to risk unheard-of dangers against opponents with nearly unlimited power.

To free themselves from the spider web of black ops, murder, madness and betrayal, Dandine and Conrad must delve ever-deeper into the spiraling, dangerous maze that is Norco, where everyone seems to be in on the most lethal of games…except you.

PULP NOW: BAD JUJU & OTHER TALES OF MADNESS AND MAYHEM!

PULP NOW: BAD JUJU & OTHER TALES OF MADNESS AND MAYHEM!

JONATHAN WOODS

Violence, sex, and gonzo plot twists fuel Woods's diverting collection of 19 stories, most set in sun-and-blood-drenched borderlands. Incident in the Tropics, Down Mexico Way, Maracaibo, and We Don' Need No Stinkin' Baggezz amp up the volume to 11, while other offerings feature flying sharks, the adventures of a bodiless head, and a slime thing quickly snaking up nostrils.

Woods, who earned his neo-pulp rep in Web zines such as Dogmatika and Plots with Guns, keeps the words popping along, though the endings of his stories are often inconsequential—only more reason to hop instantly into the next yarn.

Throughout, a penchant for vivid imagery slaps the reader around like a boxing bag: A veneer of sweat covers her body like the glaze on a Christmas ham; shadows as murky as an abortion clinic in the Bible Belt; Her small conical breasts confronted him like twin interstellar ray guns. New pulp, indeed.

Y/A CORNER: ZOMBIES VS. UNICORNS!

Y/A CORNER: ZOMBIES VS. UNICORNS!

EDITED BY HOLLY BLACK AND JUSTINE LARBALESTIER

SEPTEMBER 2010

It's a question as old as time itself: which is better, the zombie or the unicorn? In this anthology, edited by Holly Black and Justine Larbalestier (unicorn and zombie, respectively), strong arguments are made for both sides in the form of short stories. Half of the stories portray the strengths--for good and evil--of unicorns and half show the good (and really, really bad-ass) side of zombies. Contributors include many bestselling teen authors, including Cassandra Clare, Libba Bray, Maureen Johnson, Meg Cabot, Scott Westerfeld, and Margo Lanagan.

This anthology will have everyone asking: Team Zombie or Team Unicorn?

MYSTERY CORNER: HOOK, LINE & SINISTER!

MYSTERY CORNER: HOOK, LINE & SINISTER!

EDITED BY T. JEFFERSON PARKER

Fishing can be murder both literally and figuratively, as shown in this rich string of 16 original stories caught and displayed by bestseller Parker. Not all are trophy worthy, but most are keepers, like Mr. Brody's Trout by the late William G. Tapply, in which bait shop owner Stoney Calhoun guides an elderly fisherman on a monthlong quest for a ten-pound native Maine brook trout. Dana Stabenow's Kate Shugak solves a missing person case and metes out poetic justice in her Alaskan village in Cherchez La Femme.

In John Lescroart's clever Unsnaggable, a Yellowstone fishing trip offers a spouse the chance to exit a marriage. Three brief fishing lessons from a hit man teach a suicidal man a life lesson in Brian M. Wiprud's provocative Granite Hat. Other contributors include Michael Connelly, Ridley Pearson, C.J. Box, and James W. Hall. This solid anthology demonstrates that a passion for fishing and a passion for writing can hook a reader and reel him in.

FANTASY CORNER: MY NAME IS MEMORY!

FANTASY CORNER: MY NAME IS MEMORY!

ANN BRASHARES

From the New York Times-bestselling author of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and The Last Summer (of You and Me) comes an imaginative, inspired, magical book-a love story that lasts more than a lifetime.

Daniel has spent centuries falling in love with the same girl. Life after life, crossing continents and dynasties, he and Sophia (despite her changing name and form) have been drawn together-and he remembers it all. Daniel has "the memory", the ability to recall past lives and recognize souls of those he's previously known. It is a gift and a curse. For all the times that he and Sophia have been drawn together throughout history, they have also been torn painfully, fatally, apart. A love always too short.

Interwoven through Sophia and Daniel's unfolding present day relationship are glimpses of their expansive history together. From 552 Asia Minor to 1918 England and 1972 Virginia, the two souls share a long and sometimes torturous path of seeking each other time and time again. But just when young Sophia (now "Lucy" in the present) finally begins to awaken to the secret of their shared past, to understand the true reason for the strength of their attraction, the mysterious force that has always torn them apart reappears. Ultimately, they must come to understand what stands in the way of their love if they are ever to spend a lifetime together.

A magical, suspenseful, heartbreaking story of true love, My Name is Memory proves the power and endurance of a union that was meant to be.

PARANORMAL CORNER: MOZART'S BLOOD!!

PARANORMAL CORNER: MOZART'S BLOOD!

LOUISE MARLEY

Marley, a musician and writer, has produced a stunning drama inspired by the life of Teresa Saporiti, the first Donna Anna. Teresa, an aspiring singer, was turned into a vampire by a Czech aristocrat. As bad as the need for blood are the memories of the victims, which remain with the taker.

Teresa has learned to deal with them, but Mozart, whom the baroness bit at the same time, never did and died painfully because he could not bring himself to satisfy the unnatural thirst. In San Francisco in 1906, Teresa meets Ugo, a Silician werewolf with a very curious past of his own. They become partners, guarding each other’s backs.

In twenty-first-century Milan, an egoistic baritone thinks he has figured out Teresa’s secret and abducts Ugo to obtain the blood that holds Mozart’s memories. The story covers four centuries, but the shifts between the past and the present are seamlessly handled, and the development of Teresa and Ugo over those centuries is impressive. An engrossing piece, from overture to final chord.

NOIR CENTRAL: VERONICA LAKE!

NOIR CENTRAL: VERONICA LAKE!

JOE ACKERMAN HAS POSTED A COOL PIECE OVER AT HIS TWO-FISTED TALES OF TRUE-LIFE WEIRD ROMANCE BLOG ON ONE OF MY FAVORITE VAVAVAVOOM NOIR FEMME FATALES – VERONICA LAKE . . .

A stray lock of her shoulder-length blonde hair during a publicity photo shoot led to her iconic "peekaboo" hairstyle, which was widely imitated. During World War II, she changed her trademark image to encourage women working in war industry factories to adopt more practical, safer hairstyles.

Although popular with the public, Lake had a complex personality and acquired a reputation for being difficult to work with. Eddie Bracken, her co-star in Star Spangled Rhythm was quoted as saying, "She was known as 'The Bitch' and she deserved the title." In that movie, Lake took part in a song lampooning her hair style, "A Sweater, A Sarong and a Peekaboo Bang", performed with Paulette Goddard and Dorothy Lamour.

Lake's career stumbled with her unsympathetic role as Nazi spy Dora Bruckman in 1944's The Hour Before the Dawn. During filming, she tripped on a lighting cable while pregnant and began hemorrhaging. She recovered, but her second child, William, was born prematurely on July 8, 1943, dying a week later from uremic poisoning. By the end of 1943, her first marriage ended in divorce. Meanwhile, scathing reviews of The Hour Before Dawn included criticism of her unconvincing German accent.

Nonetheless, Lake was earning $4,500 per week under her contract with Paramount. She had begun drinking more heavily during this period and people began refusing to work with her. Paramount cast Lake in a string of mostly forgotten films. A notable exception was The Blue Dahlia (1946), in which she again co-starred with Ladd. During filming, screenplay writer Raymond Chandler referred to her as "Moronica Lake". Paramount decided not to renew her contract in 1948.

AMANDA MARRONE

The Van Helsing family has been hunting vampires for over one hundred years, but sixteen-year-old Daphne wishes her parents would take up an occupation that doesn’t involve decapitating vamps for cash. All Daphne wants is to settle down in one place, attend an actual school, and finally find a BFF to go to the mall with. Instead, Daphne has resigned herself to a life of fast food, cheap motels and buying garlic in bulk.

But when the Van Helsings are called to a coastal town in Maine, Daphne’s world is turned upside down. Not only do the Van Helsings find themselves hunting a terrifying new kind of vampire (one without fangs but with a taste for kindergarten cuisine), Daphne meets her first potential BF! The hitch? Her new crush is none other than Tyler Harker, AKA, the son of the rival slayer family.

What’s a teen vampire slayer to do?

HARD CASE CRIME NEWSLETTER!

HARD CASE CRIME NEWSLETTER!

HERE'S THE WORD FROM HARD CASE CRIME EDITOR CHARLES ARDAI . . .

The books Max Allan Collins has written for us about the hitman known as Quarry -- THE LAST QUARRY, THE FIRST QUARRY, QUARRY IN THE MIDDLE -- have been some of our most popular. One of them was even turned into a movie, "The Last Lullaby," starring Tom Sizemore as Collins' enigmatic killer.

When October comes around, we'll be adding a new entry to the list: QUARRY'S EX. This one puts Quarry in particularly hot water when, on a job, he runs into one of the few people in the world who know his true identity: his adulterous ex-wife. If you'd like to read the first chapter, you can find it on our Web site: www.HardCaseCrime.com

Want more than a chapter? We're giving away a dozen free advance copies of the book. All you have to do is send e-mail to: drawing@hardcasecrime.com (including your name and the address you'd like the book mailed to if you're selected). There's just one other thing we're asking this time: if you're chosen, we ask that you post a review somewhere online of one of the OTHER Quarry books -- it can be on your own blog if you have one, it can be a site like Amazon.com or BN.com, it can be anywhere you like. If you've already read the first three Quarry novels, that'll be easy -- just pick your favorite and tell people about it If you haven't read any of them yet, getting one (or all three!) is easy, too: just visit your favorite local or online bookseller.

All entries must be in by 5PM New York time on July 31; only one entry per person, please. Good luck!

Oh, and while I have you: We've also finally posted the first chapter of CHOKE HOLD, Christa Faust's upcoming sequel to MONEY SHOT, on our Web site, and I think you're really going to like it. Just click on the words "CHOKE HOLD" in the list of book titles on our home page, then on "Read A Sample Chapter." We're not holding a drawing for advance copies of this one yet -- but you can still enjoy a taste of what's coming...

And speaking of what's coming: At the end of this month you'll be able to find Brett Halliday's MURDER IS MY BUSINESS, the first appearance of famous detective Mike Shayne in bookstores in a couple of decades. The cover's a brand new painting by long-time Halliday illustrator (and Hard Case Crime favorite) Robert McGinnis, and the book even features a brief introduction from Hollywood screenwriter Shane Black (creator of "Lethal Weapon" and writer/director of "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," which Shane based on two Mike Shayne novels).

If even the end of the month is too long for you to wait for some great summer reading, I can't urge you strongly enough to pick up a copy of the book we have in stores now, NOBODY'S ANGEL by Jack Clark. This is the book the Washington Post raved about recently, calling it "a gem" and "just about perfect." The Chicago Sun-Times called it "captivating...heartbreaking," saying "each page turn feels like real, authentic Chicago." And those are just two of the many raves the book has gotten. It's an amazing, amazing book, truly one of the finest we've ever published, and if you haven't read it yet, you should. Go get a copy and settle in for a great read.

Time for one more bit of Coming Attractions? This coming Friday -- July 9th -- is the premiere of Hard Case Crime's first ever TV series, "Haven" on SyFy. It airs at 10PM on Fridays in the U.S.; check your local listings for times and dates if you're in another country. The series is based on our bestselling book of all time, Stephen King's THE COLORADO KID, and I've been fortunate to get to work on it as a writer and producer. Yes, being a SyFy show it contains more supernatural elements that you'd normally associate with Hard Case Crime -- but it's also a mystery show at its core (the main characters are an FBI agent, a cop, and a criminal), and I promise we've got some great stories up our sleeves.

I'll be watching, popcorn in hand, when Friday night rolls around. Won't you join me?

QUARRY'S EX!

QUARRY'S EX!

MAX ALLAN COLLINS

COMING IN OCTOBER 2010 FROM HARD CASE CRIME!

Even the enigmatic hit man called Quarry had to start somewhere. And for him that was the day he returned stateside from Nam to find his young wife cheating. He’d killed plenty overseas, so killing her lover was no big deal. And when he was recruited to use his skills as a contract killer, that transition was easy, too. He survived in this jungle as he had in that other one—by expecting trouble.

AGE OF ADVENTURE

WOMEN PLAYING THE BLUES!

WOMEN PLAYING THE BLUES!

In a typical musical coincidence, i was recently given two new blues cds featuring female artists. Not my usual listening fare, but i enjoyed both, especially Cyndi Lauper’s as i admire the way she’s survived in the music business on her own constantly reinvented terms . . .

MEMPHIS BLUES ~ CYNDI LAUPER

Cyndi Lauper has never followed trends. Her hits have come despite the oddness of her sounds. However, on the surface Lauper may sound as if she’s channeling Betty Boop, but underneath the performance there is a signature sound and some amazing vocal phrasing.

Now, Lauper has again bucked current pop trends and has immersed herself in the blues – and how the music loves her. With help from B.B. King, Charlie Musslewhite, and Johnny Lang, among others, Lauper really shows her chops. Anyone who has ever underrated her is in for a surprise.

Memphis Blues is a heartfelt, gritty, emotional, full-out blues album. Well beyond the lightweight pop of her early years, Lauper is at the point in her career where she can claim ownership of a continuing artistic legacy. Lauper makes you listen, makes you feel, and on this CD she really makes you feel the blues.

TRACKLIST

1. I m Just Your Fool (Charlie Musselwhite)
2. Shattered Dreams (Allen Toussaint)
3. Early in the Morning (B.B. King)
4. Romance in the Dark
5. How Blue Can You Get (Jonny Lang)
6. Down Don t Bother Me (Charlie Musselwhite)
7. Don t Cry No More
8. Rollin and Tumblin (Ann Peebles)
9. Down So Low Listen
10. Mother Earth (Allen Toussaint)
11. Cross Roads (Jonny Lang)
12. Wild Women Don’t Get the Blues

BACK TO THE BLUES ~ SUE FOLEY!

Foley has been on the blues scene since the early ‘90s. She is an accomplished guitarist with a voice that sneaks up on you without warning. There are some high points on this CD, which contains a number of outtakes from her earlier efforts, including her cover of Bob Dylan's Positively 4th Street, the original Come Play with Me, and Gone Blind, which closes the album on a traditional blues note.

TRACKLIST:

1. Lightnin' Boogie
2. Come On
3. Positively 4th Street
4. If You Think I've Lost You
5. I Feel So Good
6. Tayna
7. Me and My Chauffeur Blues
8. Come Play With Me
9. Can't Afford to Do It
10. Make Me a Pallet on the Floor
11. Guitar Rumba
12. The Leading Brand
13. Gone Blind

If you are into the blues or have them, both these CDs will fit your needs.

MILT BRUCKNER: SEND ME SOFTLY (1957)!

MILT BRUCKNER: SEND ME SOFTLY (1957)!

CAN ANYBODY TELL ME WHAT THE WOMAN ON THE ABOVE ALBUM COVER HAS JUST FINISHED DOING?

YOU GOTTA LOVE THE ‘50s . . .

THANKS TO KELLY’S LOUNGE SOUNDZ FOR THIS COOL DOWNLOAD . . .

Milt Buckner's Hammond organ style and sound is quite different from others who followed in his footsteps. His choppy two-hand chord approach, thorny and biting sound and his regular usage of a bass player identified him as a raw industrialist coming from the Midwest hearths of St. Louis and Detroit. Buckner has largely been ignored as a pioneer of the organ in the '50s. He actually came out of the swing era as a pianist and sometimes cocktail lounge performer who was able to straddle the line between popular sounds of the day and more riveting and substantive jazz.

The sessions from "Send Me Softly" are distinctly more cocktail or martini induced than his usual ale or stout style.

FORGOTTEN BOOKS: FOR WHOM THE BALL ROLLS!

FORGOTTEN BOOKS: FOR WHOM THE BALL ROLLS!

IAN PLENDERLEITH

As the World Cup brings us the drama of the quarter finals this weekend (the clashing of styles, Brazil vs. Netherlands, Germany vs. Argentina, it doesn’t get much more dramatic), I wanted to weigh in on my favorite collection of football/soccer short stories – For Whom The Ball Rolls by renown soccer journalist Ian Plenderleith.

Plenderleith is a master of crafting entertaining, offbeat tales, often a web of coincidences and circumstances leading to a punch line delivered with the precision of a world class striker.

FOR WHOM THE BALL ROLLS

The ex-pro sitting in front of the TV, interminably replaying the last moment of his career; the political activist who’s struggling to concentrate on a seminar because he knows a vital international match is being shown in the bar; the failed, alcoholic actor who reflects on life from inside the club mascot; the quiet left-back who never speaks to any teammates . . . Ian Plenderleith gets inside the heads of all his characters and finds one thing in common: that football is, for the most part, the be-all and end-all.
But also in this collection is a set of stories that proves life does exist away from the square acre of turf and that Plenderleith is an adept chronicler of the lives of the mad, the aging, and the averagely dysfunctional . . .

Whether about football or just everyday life, the stories in For Whom The Ball Rolls make up a wonderful, understated and gritty first collection from one of When Saturday Comes regular contributors

These are stories that bring out the passion, fears, hopes and failures known to all true footie fans, while also capturing the sheer joy and importance of the game’s meaning to so many people – not the trophies and final results, but how the game influences the everyday life of everyday people.

PULP SURFIN’!

PULP SURFIN’!

I DIDN’T KNOW PULP AND SURFIN’ COULD BE COMPATIBLE, BUT IN THE NOIR WORLD ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE . . .

Let's get the party started with Pulp Surfin'. You get old school & modern surf groups, and a keen variety of novelty tunes and straight out surf instrumentals. Some of the coolest highlights include Bobby Fuller's raw take on "Miserlou," The Blue Hawaiians' cover of Penetration" (trivia note: for you Spongebob fans, the cool instrumentals in the cartoons are often The Blue Hawaiians!), and "Intoxica" by The Centurions. The piece that wins me over, above everything else, is Eden Ahbez's spoken prose "Full Moon," a celebration of his solitary earthy lifestyle. If his name does not ring a bell, Eden Ahbez is best known for penning the song "Nature Boy" that was made famous by Nat King Cole, and has been covered by many vocalists since then. The cover is a neat homage to the Pulp Fiction movie poster, and despite the title "Pulp Surfing," its contents go far beyond surf music.
