SAVE AGATHA CHRISTIE'S POIROT!

HERE’S THE WORD FROM CHRISTIE PROMOTER BRIAN SHERIDAN . . .

This month, the tenth series of Poirot will air on PBS. It may be the last
despite there being only 6 Christie stories to be filmed.

Below is an excerpt from an online article with more info and how
we can help save the show.

"In early 2010, it was speculated the Poirot series might end before
the last six stories (out of 71) are filmed. David Suchet said, "I'm
pragmatic and accept that things get cancelled. Of course, there are
cutbacks in TV drama and if it is not to be, it is not to be. I will
have to be a big boy and accept it.” He added, "Of course I would be
very sad if it didn't get recommissioned."

Suchet also stated in April 2010 that if the series were to return,
but on a lower budget scale, he would not want to continue making the
last episodes if they would compromise the quality of the program.

So now is the time for fans to let ITV know we would like ITV to
produce the last of the Hercule Poirot stories . . .

FORGOTTEN BOOKS: OFF SIDE!

FORGOTTEN BOOKS: OFF SIDE!

MANUEL VAZQUEZ MONTALBAN

With the World Cup spiraling up to the final game this Sunday, I’m offering up one last soccer mystery. This time it’s a great mystery with soccer well woven in to the story – call it soccer noir . . .

With Spain playing in the World Cup Final against the Netherlands, this week’s Forgotten Books choice is also quite appropriate.

Born and Living in Barcelona, author Manuel Vazquez Montalban infuses his fast-living, gourmet private eye character, Pepe Carvalho, with a European sensibility – specifically, a Spanish sensibility – which makes him unique. There is a great flavor of Barcelona, Madrid, and all of Spain in these pages, plus an understanding of how important soccer/football is to its inhabitants – especially when the home team is led by an expensive foreigner.

Montalban is a master of the mystery trade having won both the Spanish Planeta Prize and the French Grand Prix of Detective Fiction.

OFF SIDE

Paella, death, and an English centre forward

“Because you use your centre forward to make yourselves feel like gods who can manage victories and defeats, from the comfortable throne of minor Caesars: the centre forward will be killed at dusk.”

To revive its sagging fortunes, Barcelona FC has brought the services of Jack Mortimer, European Footballer of the Year. No sooner has Mortimer taken possession of his company Porsche that the death threats start arriving. Are they a hoax, the work of a loner, or are they connected to the awesome real estate speculation that is tearing Barcelona apart?

In a period of turmoil where Catalan pimps and racketeers are being hustled off the streets by crime syndicates from the Middle East, Pepe Carvalho is thinking of retirement, but the need to save the soul of his beloved Barcelona forces him to take on a case that can only end in disaster.

I really enjoy the Pepe Carvalho stories and highly recommend at least giving them a try – one taste and you’ll be hooked.

Leon Cazador holds back the encroaching night of unreason

Private Investigator Leon Cazador is half-English, half-Spanish and wholly against the ungodly. His connections run wide and deep, which is to be expected of a man who served in the Spanish Foreign Legion, liaised with Japanese police, and was a spy. Dive into his fascinating stories, based on real events. Glean insight into his past and the people with whom he rubbed shoulders. Cazador translated into English means hunter. He is indeed a man driven to hunt down felons of all kinds, to redress the balance of good against evil.

Sometimes, Cazador operates in disguise under several aliases, among them Carlos Ortiz Santos, a modern day Simon Templar. Join him as he combats drug-traffickers, grave robbers, al-Qaeda infiltrators and conmen. Be witness to the dodgy Spanish developers and shady expat Englishmen who face his wrath. Traders in human beings, stolen vehicles and endangered species meet their match. Kidnappers, crooked mayors and conniving Lotharios will come within his orbit of ire. Even the vengeful Chinese and indebted Japanese are his friends—and enemies.

In his adventurous life, he's witnessed many travesties of justice, so as a private investigator, he will use his considerable skills to right wrongs in the most clever and unexpected of ways. Leon Cazador fights injustice in all its forms and
often metes out his own rough justice. It’s what he does.

FREE KINDLE e-BOOK ~ THE MAGICIAN’S ACCOMPLICE!

MICHAEL GENELIN

In Genelin's superb third novel featuring Slovakian police commander Jana Matinova (after 2009's Dark Dreams), a late-night call plunges Matinova into an unusual murder case. A professional hit man has gunned down university student Denis Macek, who sneaked into the dining room of a swanky Bratislava hotel to get free food. Matinova has barely begun to investigate before she learns that her lover, prosecutor Peter Saris, who'd been conducting a sensitive corruption inquiry, has been killed by a bomb set in his office phone. To prevent her from seeking revenge, her supervisor transfers Matinova to Europol headquarters in The Hague, where her predecessor as her country's representative has vanished. Macek's uncle, a retired magician, tracks the commander down, and the pair scheme to bring those responsible for their losses to justice. Genelin brilliantly blends action and detection, never allowing the plot twists to overshadow his characters' humanity.

ESPIONAGE CENTRAL: I, SPY?

KATE JOHNSON

THE SPY NOVEL AS CHICK-LIT . . .

Never underestimate the blonde. "The British spy is elegant, suave and sophisticated. The British spy is not blonde, built and confused."

But Sophie Green is, and she's just been hired by a highly secret government agency. She drives a car the colour of bile and is obsessed with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She doesn't know which end of the gun to fire from and her hair hasn't been natural since she was twelve. But that's not going to stop her from trying to save the day, once she figures out who to save it from.

Sexy spies, plane crashes, firebombs and multicoloured cocktails-they're all in a day's work for Sophie. Roll over, Bond, there's a new bombshell in town. And it's got Sophie's name on it...

Warning, this title contains guns, swearing, dark thoughts about cheerful people, incomprehensible Britishisms, and painful sarcasm.

PULP NOW: INTERNECINE!

PULP NOW: INTERNECINE!

DAVID J. SCHOW

“Smart, scathing, and verbally inventive to an astonishing degree, David J. Schow is one of the most interesting writers of his generation.”

— Peter Straub

“Inter-what?” When advertising executive Conrad Maddox returns from a redeye flight and finds a mysterious locker key waiting in his rental car, he discovers a briefcase loaded with guns and money. Several hours later, his entire life tumbles down a rabbit hole when he meets Dandine, owner of the case and former contract assassin for a shadowy organization called Norco, which is now out to nail both of them.

“Internecine” means conflict, mutual destruction, and slaughter—or, as Dandine tells Conrad, they are now inadvertently at play in a field of “terrorism, counter-assassination, military coups, dirty tricks, Watergate, spy vs. spy, murky secret organizations, that sort of thing.” A world in which being innocent can’t save you, the police can’t help you, and your only hope of getting out alive is to risk unheard-of dangers against opponents with nearly unlimited power.

To free themselves from the spider web of black ops, murder, madness and betrayal, Dandine and Conrad must delve ever-deeper into the spiraling, dangerous maze that is Norco, where everyone seems to be in on the most lethal of games…except you.

PULP NOW: BAD JUJU & OTHER TALES OF MADNESS AND MAYHEM!

PULP NOW: BAD JUJU & OTHER TALES OF MADNESS AND MAYHEM!

JONATHAN WOODS

Violence, sex, and gonzo plot twists fuel Woods's diverting collection of 19 stories, most set in sun-and-blood-drenched borderlands. Incident in the Tropics, Down Mexico Way, Maracaibo, and We Don' Need No Stinkin' Baggezz amp up the volume to 11, while other offerings feature flying sharks, the adventures of a bodiless head, and a slime thing quickly snaking up nostrils.

Woods, who earned his neo-pulp rep in Web zines such as Dogmatika and Plots with Guns, keeps the words popping along, though the endings of his stories are often inconsequential—only more reason to hop instantly into the next yarn.

Throughout, a penchant for vivid imagery slaps the reader around like a boxing bag: A veneer of sweat covers her body like the glaze on a Christmas ham; shadows as murky as an abortion clinic in the Bible Belt; Her small conical breasts confronted him like twin interstellar ray guns. New pulp, indeed.

Y/A CORNER: ZOMBIES VS. UNICORNS!

Y/A CORNER: ZOMBIES VS. UNICORNS!

EDITED BY HOLLY BLACK AND JUSTINE LARBALESTIER

SEPTEMBER 2010

It's a question as old as time itself: which is better, the zombie or the unicorn? In this anthology, edited by Holly Black and Justine Larbalestier (unicorn and zombie, respectively), strong arguments are made for both sides in the form of short stories. Half of the stories portray the strengths--for good and evil--of unicorns and half show the good (and really, really bad-ass) side of zombies. Contributors include many bestselling teen authors, including Cassandra Clare, Libba Bray, Maureen Johnson, Meg Cabot, Scott Westerfeld, and Margo Lanagan.

This anthology will have everyone asking: Team Zombie or Team Unicorn?

MYSTERY CORNER: HOOK, LINE & SINISTER!

MYSTERY CORNER: HOOK, LINE & SINISTER!

EDITED BY T. JEFFERSON PARKER

Fishing can be murder both literally and figuratively, as shown in this rich string of 16 original stories caught and displayed by bestseller Parker. Not all are trophy worthy, but most are keepers, like Mr. Brody's Trout by the late William G. Tapply, in which bait shop owner Stoney Calhoun guides an elderly fisherman on a monthlong quest for a ten-pound native Maine brook trout. Dana Stabenow's Kate Shugak solves a missing person case and metes out poetic justice in her Alaskan village in Cherchez La Femme.

In John Lescroart's clever Unsnaggable, a Yellowstone fishing trip offers a spouse the chance to exit a marriage. Three brief fishing lessons from a hit man teach a suicidal man a life lesson in Brian M. Wiprud's provocative Granite Hat. Other contributors include Michael Connelly, Ridley Pearson, C.J. Box, and James W. Hall. This solid anthology demonstrates that a passion for fishing and a passion for writing can hook a reader and reel him in.

FANTASY CORNER: MY NAME IS MEMORY!

FANTASY CORNER: MY NAME IS MEMORY!

ANN BRASHARES

From the New York Times-bestselling author of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and The Last Summer (of You and Me) comes an imaginative, inspired, magical book-a love story that lasts more than a lifetime.

Daniel has spent centuries falling in love with the same girl. Life after life, crossing continents and dynasties, he and Sophia (despite her changing name and form) have been drawn together-and he remembers it all. Daniel has "the memory", the ability to recall past lives and recognize souls of those he's previously known. It is a gift and a curse. For all the times that he and Sophia have been drawn together throughout history, they have also been torn painfully, fatally, apart. A love always too short.

Interwoven through Sophia and Daniel's unfolding present day relationship are glimpses of their expansive history together. From 552 Asia Minor to 1918 England and 1972 Virginia, the two souls share a long and sometimes torturous path of seeking each other time and time again. But just when young Sophia (now "Lucy" in the present) finally begins to awaken to the secret of their shared past, to understand the true reason for the strength of their attraction, the mysterious force that has always torn them apart reappears. Ultimately, they must come to understand what stands in the way of their love if they are ever to spend a lifetime together.

A magical, suspenseful, heartbreaking story of true love, My Name is Memory proves the power and endurance of a union that was meant to be.

PARANORMAL CORNER: MOZART'S BLOOD!!

PARANORMAL CORNER: MOZART'S BLOOD!

LOUISE MARLEY

Marley, a musician and writer, has produced a stunning drama inspired by the life of Teresa Saporiti, the first Donna Anna. Teresa, an aspiring singer, was turned into a vampire by a Czech aristocrat. As bad as the need for blood are the memories of the victims, which remain with the taker.

Teresa has learned to deal with them, but Mozart, whom the baroness bit at the same time, never did and died painfully because he could not bring himself to satisfy the unnatural thirst. In San Francisco in 1906, Teresa meets Ugo, a Silician werewolf with a very curious past of his own. They become partners, guarding each other’s backs.

In twenty-first-century Milan, an egoistic baritone thinks he has figured out Teresa’s secret and abducts Ugo to obtain the blood that holds Mozart’s memories. The story covers four centuries, but the shifts between the past and the present are seamlessly handled, and the development of Teresa and Ugo over those centuries is impressive. An engrossing piece, from overture to final chord.

NOIR CENTRAL: VERONICA LAKE!

NOIR CENTRAL: VERONICA LAKE!

JOE ACKERMAN HAS POSTED A COOL PIECE OVER AT HIS TWO-FISTED TALES OF TRUE-LIFE WEIRD ROMANCE BLOG ON ONE OF MY FAVORITE VAVAVAVOOM NOIR FEMME FATALES – VERONICA LAKE . . .

A stray lock of her shoulder-length blonde hair during a publicity photo shoot led to her iconic "peekaboo" hairstyle, which was widely imitated. During World War II, she changed her trademark image to encourage women working in war industry factories to adopt more practical, safer hairstyles.

Although popular with the public, Lake had a complex personality and acquired a reputation for being difficult to work with. Eddie Bracken, her co-star in Star Spangled Rhythm was quoted as saying, "She was known as 'The Bitch' and she deserved the title." In that movie, Lake took part in a song lampooning her hair style, "A Sweater, A Sarong and a Peekaboo Bang", performed with Paulette Goddard and Dorothy Lamour.

Lake's career stumbled with her unsympathetic role as Nazi spy Dora Bruckman in 1944's The Hour Before the Dawn. During filming, she tripped on a lighting cable while pregnant and began hemorrhaging. She recovered, but her second child, William, was born prematurely on July 8, 1943, dying a week later from uremic poisoning. By the end of 1943, her first marriage ended in divorce. Meanwhile, scathing reviews of The Hour Before Dawn included criticism of her unconvincing German accent.

Nonetheless, Lake was earning $4,500 per week under her contract with Paramount. She had begun drinking more heavily during this period and people began refusing to work with her. Paramount cast Lake in a string of mostly forgotten films. A notable exception was The Blue Dahlia (1946), in which she again co-starred with Ladd. During filming, screenplay writer Raymond Chandler referred to her as "Moronica Lake". Paramount decided not to renew her contract in 1948.
