NOIR CENTRAL: HEELS ARE FOR HATING!

NOIR CENTRAL: HEELS ARE FOR HATING!

FLETCHER FLORA

A TOUGH, BOXING NOVEL OF WHICH I WAS UNAWARE . . .

AVAILABLE FOR YOUR KINDLE $1.99

Jackie Brand is a small-time middleweight boxing professional just barely trying to make ends meet. The week before a fight with one of Jay Paley’s boys, he comes home to his wife Peg daydreaming again about her much-coveted motor court out on Highway 66, and guiltily he goes out to have a drink. At the bar, he is met by the competition’s manager, and the latter makes a proposal: lose the fight and get paid ten thousand dollars. The amount would actually cover the downpayment for Peg’s house, so Jackie decides to accept the offer. But what price will it cost him?

Also includes the stories: SHE ASKED FOR IT, and POINTS SOUTH.

Fletcher Flora (1914-1968) wrote various “sensational” stories during the 40’s and 50’s. Flora started writing right at the end of the pulp era, for magazines like ‘Dime Detective’. Then he moved on to do some 60 stories for the digests (Pursuit, EQMM, Suspect, etc). His mystery output includes over sixty short stories and sixteen novels. The Hot Shot and Strange Sisters are among his credits.

JOHN G. ROWE

MELLIFONT SPORTS SERIES #36
UK ~ PAPERBACK ORIGINAL ~ 1941

THE MYSTERY FILE CARRIED A COOL FORGOTTEN BOOKS POST ON A BOXING NOVEL I DON’T HAVE IN MY OWN LIBRARY . . .

Not my usual type of reading fare, but the book’s in the Revised Crime Fiction IV, by Allen J. Hubin, so when a copy came to hand, and being suspicious of its origin as part of a “sports” series, I thought I’d check it out, browsing my way through, and see exactly how “criminous” it actually was.

And before I knew it, nearly an hour had gone by, and I was well over half way through (128 pages of small print). Jim Ballard, a strapping young lad, is indeed a boxer, as you may have guessed from the title, or he would be, if his mother didn’t frown so upon his desire to become one.

NEWS FROM KATE STINE . . .

We've got a terrific Fall Issue in the works. Kathy Reichs, whose forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan stars in both print and TV, has taken multi-tasking to unprecedented levels. She's a fascinating person and a great interview. We also talk to William Kent Krueger, long known as a "writer's writer," but now a general favorite. Sherlock Holmes gets his comeuppance from a source close to home in Nancy Springer's terrific Enola Holmes YA novels and we review hundreds of the season's best books.

When Brian and I took over Mystery Scene in Fall 2002, our first issue coincided with the one-year anniversary of the September 11th attacks. In remembrance, that first issue offered essays from several crime writers. SJ Rozan's contribution, "My New York," is one of the finest pieces to ever appear in Mystery Scene and one we're proud to offer now at the MS Website.

HARDBOILED CORNER: JOE PUMA P.I.

HARDBOILED CORNER: JOE PUMA P.I.

WILLIAM CAMPBELL GAULT

A NEW e-COLLECTION FOR YOUR KINDLE ~ $3.99

In the dangerous and oftentimes cynical world of private investigations, Beverly Hills-based private eye Joseph Puma is a refreshing breath of fresh air. In his job, he often encounters the seedier side of life, and yet, he retains that idealism that justice must be served. “A man is dead,” he says. “Isn’t it important to you?”

Oftentimes broke and needing to pawn his old Chevrolet, Joe nevertheless finds time to help old friends and strangers, even without pay. He does not shy away from danger, if he thinks he is helping people.

As a licensed detective looking for missing persons, and investigating questionable characters murders, and kidnapping, Joe’s big and muscular physique certainly comes as a big help. His strong punch has gotten him out of sticky situations, and his quick thinking has helped save his life a few times.

In this collection, however, Joe finds himself in a rough spot more than a few times. He endures being knocked out and imprisoned, hides from gun-toting enemies underwater while losing blood, gets TKO’d by a heavy and unexpected punch and woken up by a bucket of water, and is a hair’s breadth away from dying when he was shot at and crashed his car.

The big Italian manages to emerge triumphant in the end. However, he doesn’t come out of his adventures unscathed. In his daily battle against murderers and people who consider a man’s death lightly, Joe feels the burden of his profession. He suffers guilt for the death of a colleague, and in the course of an investigation, he also has to choose between justice and a friend.

FORGOTTEN BOOKS: THE SWEET SUMMER!

FORGOTTEN BOOKS: THE SWEET SUMMER!

WILLIAM KELLEY

To celebrate my 100th Forgotten Books post, I wanted to feature a very special book – my favorite boxing novel, The Sweet Summer.

Author William Kelley’s main claim to fame is the screenplay for the Harrison Ford movie, Witness. He’s also done a lot of television scripts and other novels, but for me, The Sweet Summer is his highest achievement.

It’s the summer of 1947, and young Irish pugilist Cully Madden finds himself as the only grain of salt in the otherwise all-black Air Force boxing team. Through Cully, and the deep friendships he forms with his teammates, we see the barbaric world of racism in a new way. There is cruel honesty on the pages along with the viciousness of fights both in an out of the ring, so much so, I never questioned the truth of the scenes as they are presented.

In the late ‘40s deep South settings of flop houses, make-shift boxing rings, and swamp shanties, you can feel the grit and suffer in the humidity as the team fights with a desperation to maintain their honor and dignity in a world refusing to acknowledge them.

THE SWEET SUMMER

The Sweet Summer is a powerful story of moral awakening told through the voice of Cully Madden, a young airman and aspiring priest who joins the all-black Air Force boxing team in the summer of 1947. During the team’s tour of the South, Cully’s friendships with his teammates deepen as they face their opponents in dilapidated vaudeville halls, on the rusting hulks of barges moored at backwater Mississippi River towns, and in remote Louisiana canebrakes.

As the prey of redneck mobs and despicable small-town sheriffs, the teammates often find themselves continuing their battles outside the ring – bloody lessons that teach Cully to understand the source of the ferocity that enables his friends to survive in the brutal world he couldn’t imagine before.

The Sweet Summer is a moving account of deep friendship between a white man and his black peers in a time and place where such relationships were rare and held in contempt. It portrays with brutal honesty the humiliations suffered by African Americans in the Jim Crow South.

This is a novel filled with courage, friendship, honor, compassion and heroism. It is a special book to me as it speaks loudly on so many levels. Upon finishing it again recently, I felt I’d lived through the era and was bloodied and bruised from fighting through every punch.

Great stuff. Possibly even important stuff.

THRILLER CORNER: I WAS WAITING FOR YOU!

THRILLER CORNER: I WAS WAITING FOR YOU!

MAXIM JAKUBOWSKI

The new novel by the “King of the Erotic Thriller” (The Times)

A young Italian woman flees her home in Rome and gets involved with the wrong man in Paris.

Cornelia, the fearless stripper and killer for hire, who proved such a hit in previous novels, is back and on another mission to kill.

As the two women’s paths intersect, an English crime writer down on his luck is mistaken for a private eye and goes on a quest for a missing person.

From New York to Paris, and then on a thrilling journey through Barcelona, Tangiers, Venice and then finally to a small medieval town outside Rome, the waltz with darkness of the three characters in search of love, lust and redemption becomes ever more poignant and mysterious.

Sexy, sad, breathless, a memorable tale of lost souls caught in a spider’s web of their own making.

Maxim Jakubowski is an award-winning author. He founded the Murder One bookshop in London. He has written seven crime and erotica novels and two short story collections. He has also edited over 70 anthologies including the Xcite Sex in The City series and the annual Mammoth Books of Best New Erotica and British Crime. A past columnist for Time Out and the Guardian, he regularly appears on TV and radio. He is a winner of the Anthony and Karel Awards.

ESPIONAGE CENTRAL: SPY GUYS AND GALS!

THERE IS A NEW FAN-STYLE WEBSITE UP AND RUNNING DEDICATED TO SPY FICTION, SPY GUYS & GALS . . .

Say the word SPY to most people and they will respond with James Bond, with good reason as he is the best known of all fictional spies. With 20+ blockbuster movies over the last 40+ years, along with the standard movie hype, virtually the entire world knows about 007 and his License To Kill.

Of course, James Bond is by no means the only spy in the world of fiction, just the best known. Who are the rest? Who has his or her own license to kill, thrill, or chill. How do these agents stack up against each other? Who would you want beside you in a car chase, in a knife fight, in a dark alley, or beneath the covers?

This site is dedicated to the many, many men and women who, at least in fiction, have defended our freedoms against all forms of enemies, foreign and domestic. Well, granted a few of them were just in it for the money and many were only after the excitement, and sex played a huge role in the motivation of more than a few. But still, their actions helped not only preserve our way of life (on paper) but also brought us, the readers, many hours of escapism and vicarious pleasure.

SOMETHING DIFFERENT: OUR TRAGIC UNIVERSE!

SCARLETT THOMAS

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT YET READABLE AND INTELLIGENT, YOU CAN'T GO FAR WRONG WITH A SCARLETT THOMAS NOVEL (MY FAVORITE IS POPCO), AND OUR TRAGIC UNIVERSE IS NO EXCEPTION . . .

Can a story save your life?

Meg Carpenter is broke. Her novel is years overdue. Her cell phone is out of minutes. And her moody boyfriend’s only contribution to the household is his sour attitude. So she jumps at the chance to review a pseudoscientific book that promises life everlasting.

But who wants to live forever?

Consulting cosmology and physics, tarot cards, koans (and riddles and jokes), new-age theories of everything, narrative theory, Nietzsche, Baudrillard, and knitting patterns, Meg wends her way through Our Tragic Universe, asking this and many other questions. Does she believe in fairies? In magic? Is she a superbeing? Is she living a storyless story? And what’s the connection between her off-hand suggestion to push a car into a river, a ship in a bottle, a mysterious beast loose on the moor, and the controversial author of The Science of Living Forever?

Smart, entrancing, and boiling over with Thomas’s trademark big ideas, Our Tragic Universe is a book about how relationships are created and destroyed, how we can rewrite our futures (if not our histories), and how stories just might save our lives.

STEPHEN MARLOWE

PER THE KITSCH BLOG:

Chester Drum, international private eye, is one of my favorites.

Stephen Marlowe (born Milton S. Lesser) not only plotted a series of lively (if improbable) jet-setting adventures, but also there was an overarching story to the entire series. Drum actually has a beginning and an ending - the character grows, the supporting cast changes and things happen for a purpose.

Also, the covers are fantastic.

With only TAMMY – a slightly tearful computer with self-esteem issues – a software boss called Phil – Microsoft Middle Manager 3.0 – and an imaginary dog called Ed for company, fixing time machines is a lonely business and Charles Yu is stuck in a rut. He’s spent the better part of a decade navel-gazing, spying on 39 different versions of himself in alternate universes (and discovered that 35 of them are total jerks).

And he’s kind of fallen in love with TAMMY, which is bad because she doesn’t have a module for that. With all that’s on his mind, perhaps it’s no surprise that when he meets his future self, he shoots him in the stomach.

And that’s a beginner’s mistake for a time machine repairman. Now he’s stuck in a time loop, going in circles forever. All he has, wrapped in brown paper, is the book his future self was trying to press into his hands.

It’s called How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe. And he’s the author. And somewhere inside it is the information that could save him.

THE MARHAT FILES ~ FRANK TUTTLE

DEAD MAN’S RAIN!

Can a haunted man help the dead find peace?

Markhat is a Finder, charged with the post-war task of tracking down sons and fathers gone suddenly missing when an outbreak of peace left the army abandoned where they stood. But now it-s ten years on after the war, and about all he-s finding is trouble.
This time, trouble comes in the form of a rich widow with a problem. Her dearly departed husband, Ebed Merlat, keeps ambling back from the grave for nocturnal visits. Markhat saw a lot of during the war, but he-s never seen anyone, rich or poor, rise from the grave and go tromping around the landscape. But for the right price, he-s willing to look into it.

As a storm gathers and night falls, Markhat finds darker things than even murder lurk amid the shadows of House Merlat.

Warning, this title is rife with the walking dead, sarcastic butlers, barking dogs and ghostly dances.
THE BANSHEE’S WALK!
No secret stays buried forever.

When patron of the arts Lady Erlorne Werewilk hires Markhat to identify the parties who are stealthily mapping out the Lady-s estate by moonlight, Markhat anticipates the usual-greedy relatives or rapacious neighbors plotting a land grab. After all, muses Rannit-s most feckless Finder, the Lady runs a colony filled with young artists. Aside from snits over color and perspective, how dangerous could a squabble over a backwoods house possibly be?

With new partner Gertriss in tow, Markhat takes the Lady-s case. Before the first night is done, the house is visited by murder, mayhem, and the haunting wail of what may be a genuine banshee, come to herald not just one death, but the deaths of all within. Trapped in a house under siege, Markhat must make a desperate gamble with an old enemy to win the race to unlock the secret that lies beneath the Lady-s lands. And find a way to turn that secret against the powerful forces converging on House Werewilk.

Warning: This Markhat adventure involves suggestions of impending matrimony, full-scale gluttony, and misuse of fermented beverages. Persons with weak constitutions or persons currently at the halfway mark of a thousand-meter tightrope walk above a crocodile-infested river should refrain from reading this work of fiction in dimly-lit drawing rooms, which should never be constructed above crocodile-infested rivers in the first place.
HOLD THE DARK

Demons in a feeding frenzy drive the world-weary Markhat to the brink-

Quiet, hard-working seamstresses aren't the kind that normally go missing, even in a tough town like Rannit. Martha Hoobin's disappearance, though, quickly draws Markhat into a deadly struggle between a halfdead blood cult and the infamous sorcerer known only as the Corpsemaster.

A powerful magical artifact may be both his only hope of survival-and the source of his own inescapable damnation.

Markat-s search leads him to the one thing that's been missing in his life. But even love's awesome power may not save him from the darkness that's been unleashed inside his own soul.

Warning: This gritty, hard-boiled fantasy detective novel contains mild romance and interludes of suggestive hand-holding.
THE CADAVER CLIENT
Markhat-s new client is already dead and buried-or is he? The Markhat Files, Book 4 Humans, Trolls and even the halfdead have all passed through Markhat-s door-more than once-seeking his services as a finder of missing persons and lost loves. This is a first, though. This time, his client is a dead man. At least that-s what Granny Knot claims. But as long as the coin is real, Markhat has no trouble working for a guilt-ridden ghost.

Trouble is exactly what he finds, and soon he suspects his client, ghost or not, has darker motives for finding his estranged wife than the reconciliation he claims. Left with a cadaver for a client, a spook doctor for a partner, and Mama Hog as advisor on all things spiritual, Markhat must unravel a dark mystery ten years old, and do it before another grave is filled.

Maybe his own.

Warning: This work of fiction involves the occult, several rather questionable uses of stuffed birds, the release of sarcasm inside a cemetery and numerous disparaging portrayals of wood elves.
