ANYONE WHO HAS EVER HAD THEIR BREATH TAKEN AWAY BY ONE OF DUANE SWIERCZYNSKI’S SCREAMINGLY FAST PACED NOVELS NEEDS TO CHECK OUT HIS PROSE NOVELLA SPEED TRAP, WHICH IS BACKING UP THE LEAD STORY IN G. I. JOE SPECIAL #2, AVAILABLE NOW, AND WILL ALSO APPEAR IN THE UPCOMING G. I. JOE: COBRA WARS ANTHOLOGY NEXT SPRING . . .

CRB GIVES IT A FLAT OUT RAVE . . .

What's remarkable - what's transcendent, honestly - is a prose story by Duane Swierczynski about Joe member Skid-Mark on a recovery mission against a very determined and well-equipped Cobra operative. It's fantastic, with stunning characterization and wonderful detail. The lead story - about a captured Cobra operative who gets turned - is okay but kind of just plods along, the crafty plot twist buried in the backside of the narrative. You don't normally turn to comics for really well written action prose, but wow, here it is. Well worth the five bucks all by itself.

RAT PACK CENTRAL: CELEBRATING THE GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY OF THE RAT PACK!

REPRISE AND CAPITOL/EMI COMMEMORATE THE RAT PACK’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY WITH THE VERY BEST OF THE RAT PACK (AVAILABLE NOV 9) AND CHRISTMAS WITH THE RAT PACK (AVAILABLE OCT 5)

COMPILATIONS SPOTLIGHT VEGAS-ERA HITS AND FESTIVE HOLIDAY CLASSICS BY FRANK SINATRA, DEAN MARTIN, AND SAMMY DAVIS JR.

Iconic entertainers Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr.—the Rat Pack, a sheer force of nature on stage and film that defined suave masculine brio in the early 1960s.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of this legendary act, Reprise Records and Capitol/EMI will release two essential collections: THE VERY BEST OF THE RAT PACK (Reprise) on November 9, and CHRISTMAS WITH THE RAT PACK (EMI/Capitol) on October 5, available at all retail outlets (CD and digital), including www.sinatra.com

Featuring 18 Vegas-era favorites that spotlight each singer, THE VERY BEST OF THE RAT PACK captures the upbeat entertainment style synonymous with the trio. Showcasing swinging classics from each member solo along with two duets that feature Sinatra and Davis (“Me And My Shadow”) and Davis and Martin (“Sam’s Song”). The collection also includes a previously unreleased alternate version of Sinatra’s “I’m Gonna Live Until I Die.”

Ol’ Blues Eyes opens the album with the signature track “Come Fly With Me” and also contributes his irresistible hits “I Get A Kick Out Of You” and “Witchcraft.” The collection also includes “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” ranked among Sinatra aficionados as one of his finest collaborations with Nelson Riddle, and “Luck Be A Lady,” a song featured in the musical “Guys And Dolls.”

Dino’s velvety croon takes the spotlight on six unforgettable performances that include “Volare (Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu),” the dramatic Italian ballad that Martin took to #12 in 1958, “Who’s Got The Action?” from the 1962 film of the same name starring Martin and Lana Turner, and “Ain’t That A Kick In The Head,” a tune he sang in the Rat Pack’s classic 1960 heist film Ocean’s 11.

Davis’ ebullient delivery and vocal power shine on standout tracks such as “Eee-O Eleven” from the Ocean’s 11 soundtrack, “A Lot Of Livin’ To Do,” a song originally written for the 1960 musical Bye Bye Birdie, and “Too Close For Comfort,” from the 1956 Broadway play Mr. Wonderful in which Davis played the starring role.

CHRISTMAS WITH THE RAT PACK, a 16-track collection of festive holiday classics begins with Dean Martin’s “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!,” followed by Frank Sinatra’s take on “Mistletoe And Holly,” and Sammy Davis Jr.’s “Christmas Time All Over The World.” Other songs featured in the collection include Martin’s “Silver Bells,” “White Christmas,” “Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer,” and “Winter Wonderland,” Sinatra’s “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” “It Came Upon A Midnight Clear,” and “The First Noel,” and Davis’ “Jingle Bells” and “The Christmas Song,” among others.

In the 1940′s an admirer of Raymond Chandler’s fiction wrote a letter asking Chandler if it was possible to obtain back issues of the magazines containing his stories. Chandler responded that it was just about impossible to find such back issues and he doubted if the correspondent would have any luck.

Jump ahead more than 20 years to 1968 and that was my attitude also. I had been a SF fan for over 10 years collecting the pulps and digests, attending the SF conventions and reading the fanzines.

FORGOTTEN BOOKS: THIS GIRL FOR HIRE!

FORGOTTEN BOOKS: THIS GIRL FOR HIRE!

A friend recently told me how much of a positive impact the Honey West television series had on her while she was growing up. Clearly the television series with Anne Francis’ sultry performance as Honey West has had a much more lasting impression than the books on which the series is based. That said, despite the claims of fans about Sharon McCone, Kinsey Millhone, and V. I. Warshawski, Honey West beat them all to the punch as the first significant female private eye in on the mystery genre’s literary landscape.

As creators Forrest E. “Skip” Fickling and his wife Gloria (Gautraud) Fickling have stated, their idea was to put Mike Hammer in Marilyn Monroe’s body. And while the books have not worn as well as some of their contemporaries – sometimes it seemed the whole point of the stories was for Honey to continually lose her clothes – there is still a certain charm and readability to the tales.

I have a notion there is a reason Honey West is not given the respect she is due in the pantheon of female private eyes. While the husband and wife Ficklings are both credited with Honey’s creation, the accepted perception is Skip Fickling did all the writing while Gloria was less involved. I have no idea if this perception is true, but the fact remains that the Honey West books have received the rap of being nothing more than male fantasies by the female readers who drive the mystery genre. Clearly, this readership much prefers the female empowerment fantasies presented by the holy trinity of Millhone, McCone, and Warshawski (and their strictly female creators) to Honey’s harsher, Mike Hammer in drag, appearance.

This Girl For Hire, the first book in the series, gets Honey involved in the protection of Herb Nelson, a faded Hollywood star trying for a TV comeback. Unfortunately for Honey, Nelson ends up beaten to death. Despite this, Honey is hired by producer Sam Acres who fears the same fate may befall him. Accompanying Acres and the cast of his show on a boat to Catalina, Honey finds herself in the middle of a wild party and an even wilder storm, leaving her with suspects galore.

All of this is fairly mundane and has had critics pulling their hair out regarding the first person female narrative – which is pretty standard today – the rambling plots, confessions for no reason, and the fulfillment of male juvenile fantasies, as if these are bad things and not just the trappings of the genre during the period the books were written.

In actuality, it might have been best when the television show premiered to write new novels, encompassing all of the show’s coolness and differences from the original books, instead of simply reprinting the original – already dated – stories with TV tie-in covers.

Moonstone Books appears to have bought into this idea all these years later with their new line of Honey West comic books – a far superior product in art and content from the original Dell tie-in comics.

The character of Honey West continues to evolve. From her roots in ‘50s paperback originals, to her cameo appearance on Burke’s Law, through the 30 episodes of her own television show, to her current incarnation in today’s comics and graphic novels, Honey is still kicking butt and taking names.

Honey West is an iconic character who deserves respect, whether for her television status or for her (at the time) hardboiled literary innovation. After all, what’s so bad about Honey continually losing her clothes?

PULP NOW: THE CHEYNEY PAPERS!

HERE’S AMAZING NEWS FROM THE LATE PULPSMITH PETER CHEYNEY’S WEBSITE ADMINISTRATOR ADRIAN SENSICLE . . .

Peter Cheyney married Lauretta Singer (née Groves, from Westchester County in NY State) in 1948. After a protracted illness Peter Cheyney died on 26 June 1951. He had no children from any of his three marriages, so his estate went to Lauretta who married again, to the Honourable Henry Charles Hiley Bathurst. On her death in 1957 the estate stayed with the Bathurst family.

Early in 2010 Otto Bathurst contacted the Peter Cheyney website and asked me if I would like to become custodian of a wardrobe-full of papers and books. The papers contain a wide range of correspondence from 1952 onwards, numerous newspaper clippings, boxfiles, and a variety of manuscripts and book proofs; the books are mainly foreign editions, again from the early 1950s on.

I have used the material contained in ‘The Cheyney Papers’ to add detail to most of the original pages on this site. I have also added some new pages, such as the book proofs’ page and this page, which are works-in-progress as I make my way through the papers.

MARILYN BRANT

I MUST ADMIT TO A NOT-SO-SECRET LOVE AFFAIR WITH JANE AUSTEN. AS A RESULT, I’M USUALLY WILLING TO GIVE EACH OF THE MANY JANE AUSTEN RELATED NOVELS THAT FLOOD THE MARKET PLACE A TRY. I TOSS MOST OF THEM AFTER A FEW CHAPTERS, BUT THERE ARE ALSO SOME REAL GEMS AMONGST THE DROSS (MOST NOTABLE RECENTLY: JANE AUSTEN RUINED MY LIFE).

I HAVEN’T YET READ THIS ENTRY, ACCORDING TO JANE, BUT IT’S NOW ON MY KINDLE AND I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO CRACKING IT OPEN (ELECTRONICALLY SPEAKING, OF COURSE) . . .

In Marilyn Brant's smart, wildly inventive debut, one woman in search of herself receives advice from the ultimate expert in matters of the heart. . .
It begins one day in sophomore English class, just as Ellie Barnett's teacher is assigning Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. From nowhere comes a quiet "tsk" of displeasure. The target: Sam Blaine, the cute bad boy who's teasing Ellie mercilessly, just as he has since kindergarten. Entirely unbidden, as Jane might say, the author's ghost has taken up residence in Ellie's mind, and seems determined to stay there.

Jane's wise and witty advice guides Ellie through the hell of adolescence and beyond, serving as the voice she trusts, usually far more than her own. Years and boyfriends come and go--sometimes a little too quickly, sometimes not nearly fast enough. But Jane's counsel is constant, and on the subject of Sam, quite insistent. Stay away, Jane demands. He is your Mr. Wickham.

Still, everyone has something to learn about love--perhaps even Jane herself. And lately, the voice in Ellie's head is being drowned out by another, urging her to look beyond everything she thought she knew and seek out her very own, very unexpected, happy ending. . .

CAPTAIN ALATRISTE, BOOK 6

ARTURO PEREZ-REVERTE

This was a time when Spain was revered, feared, and hated in the easterly seas; when the devil had no color, no name, and no flag; and when the only thing needed to summon hell on earth (or sea) was a Spaniard and his sword.

Accompanied by his faithful foster son, Íñigo, Captain Alatriste accepts a job as a mercenary aboard a Spanish galleon. The ship sets sail from Naples on a journey that will take them to some of the most remote-and wretched-outposts of the empire: Morocco, Algeria, and finally to Malta for a stunning and bloody battle on the high seas that will challenge even the battle-hardened Alatriste's resolve.

Now seventeen, Íñigo is almost ready to leave Alatriste, his foster father and fellow soldier. But will age and experience bring wisdom, or is he likely to repeat many of his mentor's mistakes?
