NOIR NOW: WELSH NOIR!

NOIR NOW: WELSH NOIR!

TAINTED ARCHIVE BLOG BUDDY GARY DOBBS, A TOP WESTERN WRITER, HAS TURNED HIS HAND TO A NASTY LITTLE NOIR STORY, THE MAN WITH THE SUN IN HIS EYES, OVER AT THE WEBZINE A TWIST OF NOIR . . .

IN GARY'S WORDS . . .

I was thinking of the image of this guy with a pupil abnormality when I sat down to write and in a couple of hours I had this darkly comic Welsh-Noir story on my hard-drive. I don't know where the image came from but one evening I just had this guy in my mind, I could see those freaky eyes and that cruel smile and after that the story more or less wrote itself.

PULP NOW: SHAMELESS ART!

20TH CENTURY GENRE AND THE ARTISTS THAT DEFINED IT

Unrepentant, unapologetic, unbridled and under-appreciated, genre art from the first half of the 20th century reflected subconscious urges of a economically deprived and sexually depressed generation. This popular art set the stage for the advertised expression of today's more liberated consumer culture.

Shameless Art explores the influential work of imaginative illustrators who helped create the visual language for everything from today's comic books, magazine and television advertising, as well as imaginative movies like Avatar and sensual films like Y Tu Mama Tambien. Featuring stunning art by such genre masters as Tom Lovell, Virgil Finlay, Hannes Bok, Margaret Brundage, and Enoch Bolles, this beautifully produced full color collection mirrors mid-20th century masculine fantasies.

FORGOTTEN BOOKS: DARKER THAN YOU THINK!

FORGOTTEN BOOKS: DARKER THAN YOU THINK!

JACK WILLIAMSON

A classic tale from the 1940’s pulp Unknown, Jack Williamson’s Darker Than You Think might not be as scary as it was back in the day, but it is filled with cool stuff to which a lot of current fantasy novels owe a debt.

In many ways a precursor to today’s derivative urban fantasy genre, Darker Than You Think established many of the tropes and conventions associated with American lycanthropy legends.

DARKER THAN YOU THINK

Unsettling dreams begin for small-town reporter Will Barbee not long after he first meets the mysterious and beautiful April Bell. The dreams are vivid, powerful, and deeply disturbing nightmares in which Barbee commits atrocious acts – as well as dreams where he becomes different animals running free through the night.

The dreams also appear connected to the violent deaths of several of Barbee’s friends and associates. Is he going insane or is he embroiled in something far beyond human understanding, something unspeakably evil – an evil intimately involving the dangerously intoxicating April, and the question, 'Who is the Child of the Night?'

Despite the warnings of a murdered professor’s widow, the seductive charms of the mysterious April Bell are too much for Barbee to resist, leading him to answers that will make him wish he’d never been born.

Williamson published his first story in 1928, at the age of 20, and went on to write trail-blazing science fiction novels, including The Humanoids and The Legion Of Time. Williamson is the winner of the Pilgrim Award and the Horror Writers' Association's Lifetime Achievement Award. He is also a Nebula Grand Master.

Despite an earnestness inherent in the writings of its time, Darker Than You Think is filled with shades of noir and the feeling of ideas being explored for the first time – a tasty slice of horror/fantasy history.

AUDIO CORNER: TEX MURPHY P.I.

AUDIO CORNER: TEX MURPHY P.I.

CRUSING AROUND THE WEB TODAY, I BUMPED INTO A SITE I’D NOT VISITED BEFORE FEATURING SIX AUDIO ‘RADIO-STYLE’ SHOWS ABOUT FUTURISTIC P.I. TEX MURPHY, A CHARACTER THAT WAS THE STAR OF A POPULAR ‘90S VIDEO GAME . . .

PER WIKIPEDIA:

Tex Murphy is a hard-boiled PI. Tex is a member of the portion of the population born without any genetic defects making him a normal human (referred by in-game characters as a “Norm”). He is an avid fan of the classic film noir films of Humphrey Bogart. As such, he does his work in the style of archetypal film noir detectives such as Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe. He has remarkable skills of observation (always punctuated with humorous internal monologues); when examining objects or features, he hardly ever misses an important or unusual detail. However, he is also occasionally a bit clumsy and naive which gets him into trouble from time to time, as does his sarcastic wit.

He is honest and generally a good-natured fellow who suffers from a bad back, a little too much alcohol (Bourbon…neat, preferred) and a few too many blows to the head. He runs his Private Investigator’s business out of his apartment at the Ritz Hotel on Chandler Avenue in Old San Francisco “among the mutants and the destitute” where several businesses and friends reside, including his love interest, the mysteriously mutated newspaper stand owner Chelsee Bando. Aside from wishing for a respectable, not to mention high-paying, client all he’d like to do is earn her love and respect if he can just refrain from placing his admittedly not too bad smelling foot in his mouth.

ACCORDING TO JENZER.COM:

. . . in 2001, the actors in this very popular game produced six radio episodes for free to the community. The episodes have a nice cheesy glow to them, but they are well made and quite fun … especially if you were a fan of the old video game.

Y/A CORNER: THE INVISIBLE ORDER!

Y/A CORNER: THE INVISIBLE ORDER!

BOOK ONE: RISE OF THE DARKLINGS

PAUL CRILLEY

Emily Snow is twelve years old, supporting herself and her younger brother on the streets of Victorian England by selling watercress. One early winter morning on her way to buy supplies, she encounters a piskie–a small but very sarcastic fey creature that has been cornered by a group of the Black Sidhe, piskies from an opposing clan. She rescues him and unknowingly becomes involved in a war between the Seelie and the Unseelie, two opposing factions of fairies that have been battling each other throughout the long centuries of human history, with London–and England itself–as the ultimate prize.

When the Invisible Order–a centuries-old secret society of humans that has protected mankind from the fey’s interference–gets involved, things really start to get complicated.

Now she is the central figure in this ancient war that could permanently change Earth. With no one to trust, Emily must rely on her own instincts and guile to make the right choices that could save her family and all of mankind.

FROM THE BOOK SMUGGLERS' REVIEW:

Well, what a pleasant surprise this book was! I can honestly say that I was not expecting a book about-fairies- in- Victorian- London- with- a-Orphaned-Yet-Special heroine to be such a breath of fresh air. Although the premise is not exactly original, there are enough elements in here to make it a gripping adventure. This is due to: quirky details of the world building in which historical characters and institutions such as Christopher Wren and The Royal Society are important to the plot but also known fictional characters as well – like Merlin; the lovely writing which adds an authentic old-fashioned feel to the proceedings and above all, the heroine . . .

JAZZ CENTRAL: THIS IS GOING TO BE A GAS!

JAZZ CENTRAL: THIS IS GOING TO BE A GAS!

START SPREADING THE NEWS!

HOSTED BY THE LA JAZZ INSTITUTE

Frank Sinatra's impact on American Popular Music knows no equal but his impact on jazz and jazz musicians is just as profound. His creativity and phrasing, along with his impeccable sense of time has been studied and admired by jazz musicians since he first came on the scene in the early 1940s.

Come Swing with Me celebrates the many facets of Sinatra's career with film showings, panel discussions, special presentations and a number of "concept" concerts showcasing the composers, arrangers, lyricists and sidemen who were intregal parts of the Sinatra legacy. Many Sinatra alumni are being featured in the various ensembles as well as leading their own groups.

In addition to the concerts that feature jazz interpretations of music associated with Sinatra, we're also presenting several concerts featuring a variety of outstanding vocalists singing the classic arrangements.

The vocalists we've chosen are not Sinatra imitators in any way shape or form. They are among the finest interpreters of the Great American Songbook on the scene today; all with their own unique style and approach.

We've also added several special events that take place throughout the festival including an after hours "Jilly's" venue and a bus tour of Frank Sinatra's Hollywood.

FEATURED ARTISTS INCLUDE:

The Nelson Riddle Orchestra
Patrick Williams Orchestra
Ray Anthony Big Band Mike Melvoin Trio
The Johnny Mandel Orchestra Michael Dees
The Pied Pipers Gary Williams
Frank Capp Juggernaut Dennis Rowland
Steve Lippia Kurt Reichenbach
Deana Martin Gene Cipriano
Sue Raney Chuck Berghofer
Rat Pack Celebration Ron Anthony
Michael Andrew Gregg Field
Frankie Randall Charles Granata
Ron Jones Jazz Influence Ed Walters
Plas Johnson AND MORE.

IN ADDITION, YOU ARE INVITED TO SIGN UP FOR A VERY SPECIAL VIP BONUS EVENT . . .

We've rented Frank Sinatra's Twin Palms for the day and will take the first 100 who sign up to Palm Springs for a very exclusive party and concert at Sinatra's home.

This house is not a museum and not open to the public which makes this a once in a lifetime event that we're proud to be able to make happen. This is the famous house he lived in between 1947 and 1954 where he played host to the Hollywood elite at his legendary parties. Frequent visitors included the likes of Jimmy Van Heusen, Bob Hope, Joan Crawford, Phil Silvers, Lana Turner, Bogart and Bacall, Jack Benny, Sammy Cahn and many more. It's also the site of his well publicized romance, marriage and heartbreak with Ava Gardner.

CONCERT AND PARTY

The concert will feature A Frank Sinatra Alumni Band and will take place around the famous piano shaped pool. Our guests will have full access to the house and grounds.

TOUR OF SINATRA'S PALM SPRINGS

We will also take you on a bus tour of Sinatra's Palm Springs which will include several of his haunts and hangouts including The Riviera Hotel, Jilly's West, and the late night rat pack "summit meetings" at Riccio's and Melvyn's.

We will also see his Rancho Mirage estate known as "The Compound", and stop at his final resting place at Desert Memorial Park. We will also spend some time at the shopping/dining area on Palm Canyon Drive
which includes his star in the walk of fame.

This will be a very special event and I encourage you not to miss it. Unfortunately space is very limited and there are only a few tickets remaining.
