BLACK JACK JUSTICE #37 ~ HUSH MONEY!

NEW FROM DECODER RING THEATRE . . .

When everybody's favorite junior boy detective drops by, its usually good for a twist of a certain tail, and our Square-Jawed hero kind of enjoys that, kind of like a mean kid who pulls the wings off flies. But even a bird-dog job courtesy of the Gentleman Detective is tough to smile at when it comes wrapped in . . . Hush Money!

A TALE OF THE KIN

Death around the corner . . .

Ildrecca is a dangerous city, if you don’t know what you’re doing. It takes a canny hand and a wary eye to run these streets and survive. Fortunately, Drothe has both. He has been a member of the Kin for years, rubbing elbows with thieves and murderers from the dirtiest of alleys to the finest of neighborhoods. Working for a crime lord, he finds and takes care of trouble inside his boss’s organization—while smuggling relics on the side.

But when his boss orders Drothe to track down whoever is leaning on his organization’s people, he stumbles upon a much bigger mystery. There’s a book, a relic any number of deadly people seem to be looking for—a book that just might bring down emperors and shatter the criminal underworld.

A book now inconveniently in Drothe’s hands . . .

BURTON AND SWINBURNE ~ BOOK 2

MARK HODDER

I REALLY ENJOYED THE FIRST BOOK IN THIS SERIES, THE STRANGE AFFAIR OF SPRING HEELED JACK . . .

It is 1862, though not the 1862 it should be. Time has been altered, and Sir Richard Francis Burton, the king’s agent, is one of the few people who know that the world is now careening along a very different course from that which Destiny intended.

Burton and Swinburne’s second adventure is filled with eccentric steam-driven technology, grotesque characters, and a deepening mystery that pushes forward the three-volume story arc begun in The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack.

HOWARD CHAYKIN

THE PRETTY FAKES BLOG TAKES A LOOK AT ONE OF MY FAVORITE COMIC ARTISTS, HOWARD CHAKIN AND HIS SERIES THRILLKILLER . . .

Thrilkiller is set in 1961, a year which Chaykin characterizes as a time of transition, when the rumblings of the political upheavals to come are just beginning to unsettle the optimism of the 1950s.

The series follows the adventures of Batgirl and Robin as they tangle with corrupt cops in defense of student protestors, gays, bohemians, and pretty much any one else classified as a “best mind of my generation” in Ginbserg’s “Howl.”

With gorgeous painted art by Dan Brereton, Thrillkiller is one of the few Chaykin-written comics that does not cry out for his pencils: Every page looks like it was pieced together from a treasure trove of lost classic juvenile delinquent paperback covers . . .

STEAMPUNK CORNER: GRANDVILLE MON AMOUR!

BRYAN TALBOT

THE BADGER IS BACK!

Set three weeks after the finale of Grandville, Grandville Mon Amour pits Detective Inspector Archie LeBrockof Scotland Yard against an old adversary and ruthless urban guerrilla, Edward “Mad Dog” Mastock - a psychotic serial killer whose shocking escape from his execution by guillotine at the Tower of London begins this fast-paced, Hitchcockian steampunk thriller.

LeBrock, still racked by remorse for his failure to prevent the death of 'the Divine Sarah' and working outside the law after resigning his post following a blazing row with his superior officer, embarks on a quest to redeem himself by tracking down Mastock and bringing to an end his horrific murder spree. Aided by his adjunct and old friend, Detective Roderick Ratzi, he follows the trail of carnage to Paris.

Otherwise known as Grandville, it’s the largest city in a world dominated by France, a city used to violence following the years of terrorist bombings by the extreme fanatic wing of the British resistance during the occupation, the notorious Angry Brigade, of which Mastock was the sadistic leading light. With his customary tenacity, LeBrock stalks his prey through a world populated by anthropomorphic animals, an underclass of humans and automaton robots where advanced steam technology powers everything from hansom cabs to iron flying machines. It’s a trail that leads to the demimonde of Parisian prostitution and an atrocity perpetrated twenty-three years ago.

With a range of new and fascinating characters and a mix of Holmesian deduction, knowing humour and edge of the seat action, Grandville Mon Amour continues the vein of high-octane adventure begun in the first volume. Can even LeBrock escape the past or do heroes have feet of clay? Follow the badger!

HONOR AMONG THIEVES!

Every generation takes the Robin Hood legend and re-works it. Adding to it and building on what has been done before. This is a post-Tarantino/21st Century take on the story. Still set in the grim middle-ages, but seen through modern eyes.

STORY: In 1198 King Richard returns to Britain from his war in France to try and hunt down and kill the rebel army led by Robin of Loxley. Richard is unbalanced, his experiences in the Crusade having left him with post-traumatic stress disorder. His men manage to capture a boy who they believe is part of Loxley's gang. However, the boy, Much Miller, is in fact just a wannabe and doesn't know anything that can help Richard track the outlaws. He is tortured anyway. Lady Marian, Norman noble-woman and secretly Loxley's lover, is witness to Much's ordeal and seeks to get word to the rebels. She enlists the aid of Brother Tuck, a monk with more interest in the serving maids than in scripture. Can Loxley and his outlaws free the boy?

CREATORS: John A. Short has worked in many different areas of the comics industry, including British newspaper strips and Rip Off Comix Magazine in America. He has also self-published titles like Armageddon Patrol and Octobriana. Blake O'Farrell has worked for Marvel UK as well as Epic Comics in the States. He worked with John on the Octobriana mini-series in 1997 which won the British National Comic Award for best new British Comic that year.

PULP NOW: WILD CARDS 1!

PULP NOW: WILD CARDS 1!

GEORGE R.R. MARTIN

Back in print after a decade, expanded with new original material, this is the first volume of George R. R. Martin’s Wild cards shared-world series

There is a secret history of the world—a history in which an alien virus struck the Earth in the aftermath of World War II, endowing a handful of survivors with extraordinary powers. Some were called Aces—those with superhuman mental and physical abilities. Others were termed Jokers—cursed with bizarre mental or physical disabilities. Some turned their talents to the service of humanity. Others used their powers for evil. Wild Cards is their story.

Originally published in 1987, Wild Cards I includes powerful tales by Roger Zelazny, Walter Jon Williams, Howard Waldrop, Lewis Shiner, and George R. R. Martin himself. And this new, expanded edition contains further original tales set at the beginning of the Wild Cards universe, by eminent new writers like Hugo–winner David Levine, noted screenwriter and novelist Michael Cassutt, and New York Times bestseller Carrie Vaughn.

The subjects are too many to highlight and the contributors too prominent to single out over any other. Take a look below at the Table of Contents and if there isn't a subject, author or artist that makes you clamor to get your hands on a copy then you may not be a true Doc Savage fan.

Like last year's Big Book of Bronze, BBoB #3 features cover art by Tim Faurote.
