FORGOTTEN BOOKS: ATLANTA DEATHWATCH!

FORGOTTEN BOOKS: ATLANTA DEATHWATCH!

RALPH DENNIS

I’m not sure if any other Friday Forgotten Books posters have mentioned this series before, but even so, it rates high enough to be mentioned again . . .

The late Ralph Dennis’ paperback original Hardman series from the ‘70s remains one of the most overlooked and underestimated entries in the hardboiled field. Jim Hardman, is a middle-aged, overweight, out of shape, ex-Atlanta cop turned unlicensed private eye. Despite his physical attributes, Hardman remains one tough bastard. When coupled with his partner, former Cleveland Browns pro-football player Hump Evans (yes, Hardman and Hump – get over it) the duo form a formidable team – Spenser and Hawk before there was a Spenser and Hawk. Despite the groundbreaking done by the television series I Spy, having an Afro-American sidekick who worked as an equal partner was fairly progressive for the time period when Dennis produced the Hardman novels.

Their beat is Atlanta, a great city for kick ass action and , through Dennis’ prose becomes as much of a character in the series as Hardman and Hump. Dennis sprinkled real nightclubs, restaurants, bars, hotels, and street corner descriptions throughout the series. Atlanta was Dennis’ adopted home, and his affection for the city is obvious.

The publisher, Popular Library, did the whole series a disservice slapping on crappy covers (which are retro-collectibles now) and packaging the series as a low-rent Executioner rip-off.

You can still find some of the series entries for affordable prices through the usual Internet sources, but trying to put together the whole series from scratch today could be a challenge. But the books hold up well. Dennis’ tells a good violent series of tales making Hardman, Hump, and Atlanta well worth hardboiled fans efforts to find.

THE HARDMAN SERIES

HARDMAN 1: ATLANTA DEATHWATCH (1974)
HARDMAN 2: THE CHARLESTON KNIFE'S BACK IN TOWN (1974)
HARDMAN 3: THE GOLDEN GIRL & ALL (1974)
HARDMAN 4: PIMP FOR THE DEAD (1974)
HARDMAN 5: DOWN AMONG THE JOCKS (1974)
HARDMAN 6: MURDER'S NOT AN ODD JOB (1974)
HARDMAN 7: WORKING FOR THE MAN (1974)
HARDMAN 8: THE DEADLY COTTON HEART (1976)
HARDMAN 9: THE ONE-DOLLAR RIP-OFF (1977)
HARDMAN 10: HUMP'S FIRST CASE (1977)
HARDMAN 11: THE LAST OF THE ARMAGEDDON WARS (1977)
HARDMAN 12: THE BUY BACK BLUES (1977)

Y/A CORNER: ALIEN INVASION AND OTHER INCONVENIENCES!

Y/A CORNER: ALIEN INVASION AND OTHER INCONVENIENCES!

BRIAN YANSKEY

A polite race of telepathic killer aliens, a ten-second world conquest, and one teenage boy collide in this wry, gutsy adventure.

Jesse is in history class when a formidable, efficient race of aliens quietly takes over the earth in less time than it takes him to brush his teeth. Most humans simply fall asleep and never wake up. In moments, everyone Jesse knows and loves is gone, and he finds that he is now a slave to an inept alien leader. On the bright side, Jesse discovers he’s developing telepathic powers, and he’s not the only one.

Soon he’s forging new friendships and feeling unexpectedly hopeful. When a mysterious girl appears in his dreams, talking about escaping, Jesse begins to think the aliens may not be invincible after all. But if Jesse and his friends succeed, is there anywhere left to go?

Brian Yansky offers a funny, grim novel packed with everything boys and sci-fi fans love: aliens, humor, action, and a healthy dose of triumph.

PULP NOW: CRIMSON SKIES!

PULP NOW: CRIMSON SKIES!

ALL PULPS RECENTLY FEATURED A POST DISCUSSING THE PULPILICIOUS VIEDO GAME CRIMSON SKIES – A TALE WHICH COULD HAVE BEEN RIPPED RIGHT OUT OF THE 1930’S HERO PULPS . . .

Throughout the years, pulp has trickled down and filtered out through all corners of pop culture, so it’s only natural that it would make it to the realms of video games as well. There have been some great pulpy games throughout the years but not a lot of them had a purely-pulp “feel” to them beyond a few noticeable influences. The Crimson Skies franchise, however, gets my nomination for “THE Pulp Video Game”, and although there hasn’t been a game released since 2003, pulp fans (especially fans of the air-combat sub-genre) should be interested in checking into the games or their affiliated fiction.

I’VE NEVER PLAYED THE GAME, BUT I’VE ENJOYED THE CONNECTED FICTION. DEFINITELY WORTH A TRY, ESPECIALLY IF YOU LOVE THE AERIAL PULPS SUCH AS G-8 OR BILL BARNES . . .

MYSTERY CORNER: FIRST FROST!

MYSTERY CORNER: FIRST FROST!

I’VE LONG ENJOYED BOTH THE LATE R.D. WINGFIELD’S INSPECTOR JACK FROST NOVELS AND THE BRITISH TELEVISION SERIES STARRING THE INIMITABLE DAVID JASON AS THE TITLE CHARACTER. NOW, A PREQUEL, FIRST FROST, WRITTEN BY JAMES HENRY (WHO?) IS SET FOR PUBLICATION IN JANUARY. THE JURY WILL REMAIN OUT UNTIL I GET A CHANCE TO READ THE NOVEL, BUT I’M NOT GETTING MY HOPES UP . . .

R.D. Wingfield's unforgettable Jack Frost returns in this gripping prequel to the bestselling series

This is brilliant! A must for all fans of Frost, but also so much more. Gripping, finely written, it stands as a classic, period crime thriller in its own right. – PETER JAMES

I was delighted to read FIRST FROST. Not only a gripping mystery, but an exclusive look at Jack Frost's early years! – DAVID JASON

This is great stuff. Just when you thought you'd seen the last of him, Jack Frost returns in a prequel to the series, which finds Frost in his best paisley tie tracking down a missing girl – PETER ROBINSON

Frost is back - this is a brilliant read, I can't recommend it highly enough – MARTINA COLE

BURTON AND SWINBURNE ~ BOOK 2

MARK HODDER

I REALLY ENJOYED THE FIRST BOOK IN THIS SERIES, THE STRANGE AFFAIR OF SPRING HEELED JACK . . .

It is 1862, though not the 1862 it should be. Time has been altered, and Sir Richard Francis Burton, the king’s agent, is one of the few people who know that the world is now careening along a very different course from that which Destiny intended.

Burton and Swinburne’s second adventure is filled with eccentric steam-driven technology, grotesque characters, and a deepening mystery that pushes forward the three-volume story arc begun in The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack.
