FORGOTTEN BOOKS: AND ALL THROUGH THE HOUSE!

FORGOTTEN BOOKS: AND ALL THROUGH THE HOUSE!

ED MCBAIN

CHRISTMAS EVE AT THE 87TH PRECINT

While Ed McBain’s 87th Precint novels can hardly be deemed forgotten, this 87th Precinct novella’s (40 pages) place in the canon can be overlooked.

Originall published in Playboy and then later by Warner books in November 1994, the usual gang of detectives are all on hand to bring their special humor and shenanegans to the Christmas season, with the entire story taking place in the squadroom on Christmas Eve. The writing is conversational yet always electric and always Ed McBain – making the turning the absurd to serious and back to absurd again in turn.

AND ALL THROUGH THE HOUSE

All's quiet at the 87th Precinct on Christmas Eve . . . until Steve Carella's fellow detectives appear with a kid who's stolen a sheep, a robber with a bagful of gold, two guys fighting over a sack of frankincense, and a young couple who give birth to a baby boy at midnight behind the filing cabinets!

In essence a short story with numerous illustrations by Victor Juhasz, the first edition came packaged in an attractive slipcover. The perfect book to cozy up with by the fire on a long winter’s night!

PRIVATE EYELASHES: RADIO'S LADY DETECTIVES!

PRIVATE EYELASHES: RADIO'S LADY DETECTIVES!

JACK FRENCH

This book examines radio and mystery drama from about 1932 to the genre's final appearance in the late 1950's. While its focus is on women detectives, French provides minute and fascinating details about dozens of mystery programs and includes a comprehensive listing of source material ranging from magazine articles, to dime detective novels, to film noir. Each lady detective appearing under one of eight cleverly conceived categories gets handsome, multi-page treatment.

The author traces the chronological appearance of the subject's show, examines the program's history and origins, and details with substantial documentation the manner of the show's presentation and production. He intersperses the text with actual dialogue taken directly from the program scripts.

WHY I AM DEPRESSED!

WHY I AM DEPRESSED!

Over two thousand years ago, Moses said to the children of Israel , "Pick up your shovels, mount your asses and camels, and I will lead you to the Promised Land."

Nearly 75 years ago (when Welfare was introduced) Roosevelt said, "Lay down your shovels, sit on your asses, and light up a Camel, this is the Promised Land."

Now Obama has stolen your shovel, taxed your asses, raised the price of Camels, and mortgaged the Promised Land!

I was so depressed last night thinking about Health Care Plans, the economy, the wars, lost jobs, savings, Social Security, retirement funds, etc. . .

That I called the suicide hotline. I got a call center in Pakistan .

I told them I thought I was suicidal.

They got all excited and asked if I could drive a truck . . .

NOIR NOW: RICHIE FAHEY!

NOIR NOW: RICHIE FAHEY!

Femmes fatales and shady characters prowl through the dramatic, seductively noir recesses of Richie Fahey’s art. Resembling illustrations from pulp fiction, Fahey’s works are actually hand-colored photos.

By convincingly directing his models and utilizing vintage lighting techniques, the New York-based photographer heightens the dime-store paperback ambiance of his work.
Fahey’s influences include photos from detective magazines, cinematographers from the 1940s and ’50s, and his own collection of paperbacks dating from the 1930s to the ’60s.
His devious characters have been featured in galleries and magazines, and on the covers of a series of James Bond novels.
