KNUCKLES AND GLOVES: 'LIGHTS OUT' ON FX!

KNUCKLES AND GLOVES: 'LIGHTS OUT' ON FX!

Lights Out is new dramatic boxing series set to premier on FX the coming Tuesday. The storyline focuses on Patrick ‘Lights Out’ Leary (Holt McCallany), a down and out fighter who retired from the ring at his wife’s behest after a disastrous fight against ‘Death Row’ Reynolds. Now, several years later, Leary is trying to support his wife and daughters with his failing boxing gym – all the while struggling with his desire to return to the ring for one last shot.

I'll certainly be there for the premier episode as I’m a sucker for this type of stuff no matter how clichéd it all might be . . .

THE DONOVAN CREED NOVELS

JOHN LOCKE

LETHAL PEOPLE: A DONOVAN CREED NOVEL ~ $.99

Donovan Creed, a former CIA assassin, is a very tough man with a weakness for very easy women. Meet him in LETHAL PEOPLE a relentlessly entertaining crime novel that's often LOL - bizarre funny! The action is fast and furious, the dialogue smart, savvy and sexy. The story is filled with quirky characters and clever surprises.

LETHAL EXPERIMENT: A DONOVAN CREED NOVEL ~ $.99

What if someone offered you $100,000 with the only stipulation being that a murderer would be killed if you accept the money? Would you take it? The people who choose to take it are about to find out the ramifications of their decisions to be part of this Lethal Experiment!

Donovan Creed, former CIA assassin, is a smart-aleck tough guy who can't resist a noble cause. Despite a ton of baggage and a penchant for call girls, he always finds a way to beat the bad guys. In this sequel to Lethal People, Creed is forced to choose between his thriving contract-killer business, his part in the Lethal Experiment, and his desire to live a normal life with the beautiful Kathleen Gray and her newly-adopted daughter, Addie. Before that can happen, he has to take care of some lethal business involving a former lover.

Lethal Experiment is a breezy and fun page-turner, featuring grisly humor, outrageous characters, and sexy dialogue.

NOW AND THEN: A DONOVAN CREED NOVEL ~ $.99

When we last encountered Donovan Creed, former CIA assassin and freelance killer, he had successfully stolen billions of dollars from the world's most lethal criminals. Now all he wants is a romantic Florida vacation with the very sexy Rachel -- no fire ants, bi-polar girlfriends, rabid squirrels, accident prone homicidal maniacs, hailstorms, hairless cats, gangs, faith healers, or pirates.

FORGOTTEN BOOKS: DREAMSICLE!

FORGOTTEN BOOKS: DREAMSICLE!

W. L. RIPLEY

W. L. Ripley’s Wyatt Storme is a character who appears to have fallen into the abyss between Robert B. Parker’s Spenser and Robert Crais’ Elvis Cole after rebounding off John D. MacDonald’s Travis McGee. Falling into the same abyss is Storme’s psychotic sidekick, Chick Easton – who could just as easily be named Hawk or Joe Pike.

All of this is to say this series from the early ‘90s is very derivative, but that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily second rate. In fact, I enjoyed all three books featuring tough guy Wyatt Storme, who divides his time between Colorado and Paradise, Missouri, because it features many of the same wise-cracking, mucho-thumping satisfactions found in the series author Ripley emulates.

DREAMSICLE

Wyatt Storme quit the NFL at the peak of his game, because the continuous attention of the fans left him no private life. Wyatt, a fugitive from society's fast lane, is vacationing in Paradise County, Missouri, amid the beautiful Ozark Mountains, when he stumbles into a drug ring - one in which powerful local residents are implicated. It becomes clear that plans are under way to make a new extremely addictive narcotic, "dreamsicle," and somebody in Paradise County is hatching the plans.

Storme, when curiosity gets the best of him, finds himself in the center of the action along with an ad-hoc partner, the puzzling former Vietnam hero Chick Easton. More perceptive than the local police, courageous (and foolhardy) enough to stand up to an assortment of hardened underworld criminals, Wyatt and Chick strike into dangerous territory searching for the heart of the trouble.

Copies of the Strome novels can still be easily found and picked up inexpensively. If this sounds like your kind of thing, then they are worth checking out.

Ripley started a new series a couple of years ago featuring similarly themed character Cole Springer, who brings the additional trappings of Vegas gambling and con games to the table. Both books in this new series, Springer’s Gambit and Pressing The Bet are also worth tracking down.

HARDBOILED CORNER: BLACKSAD!

JUAN DÍAZ CANALES AND JUANJO GUARNIDO

BRUCE GROSSMAN’S LATEST BULLETS, BROADS, BLACKMAIL AND BOMBS COLUMN FOR BOOKGASM GIVES RAVES TO THIS FELINE DETECTIVE CAPER . . .

If you are any sort of fan of mystery/crime reading, this 2010 book is a must. Don’t let the fact that all the characters are animals dissuade you; they are fully developed characters just in the shape of walking and talking animals.

Its three stories inside will make you feel as though you stepped into a time machine, since all harken back to Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler in their prime. And if an introduction by Jim Steranko and praise from the likes of Neal Adams and Stan Lee aren’t enough, then keep reading. The book reprints three Blacksad stories, with the first two re-lettered to the author’s precise notes, and the third never been translated to English until now.

BLACKSAD

Private investigator John Blacksad is up to his feline ears in mystery, digging into the backstories behind murders, child abductions, and nuclear secrets. Guarnido's sumptuously painted pages and rich cinematic style bring the world of 1950s America to vibrant life, with Canales weaving in fascinating tales of conspiracy, racial tension, and the "red scare" Communist witch hunts of the time. Guarnido reinvents anthropomorphism in these pages, and industry colleagues no less than Will Eisner, Jim Steranko, and Tim Sale are fans! Whether John Blacksad is falling for dangerous women or getting beaten to within an inch of his life, his stories are, simply put, unforgettable.

FANTASY CORNER: THE DEATH WORKS SERIES!

TRENT JAMIESON

DEATH MOST DEFINITE

Steven de Selby has a hangover. Bright lights, loud noise, and lots of exercise are the last thing he wants. But that's exactly what he gets when someone starts shooting at him.

Steven is no stranger to death – Mr. D's his boss after all – but when a dead girl saves him from sharing her fate, he finds himself on the wrong end of the barrel. His job is to guide the restless dead to the underworld but now his clients are his own colleagues, friends, and family.

Mr. D's gone missing and with no one in charge, the dead start to rise, the living are hunted, and the whole city teeters on the brink of a regional apocalypse-unless Steven can shake his hangover, not fall for the dead girl, and find out what happened to his boss – that is, Death himself.

MANAGING DEATH

It's not easy being Death. For starters, people keep dying. And then, they keep getting up again.

Steven de Selby got promoted. This makes the increasing number of stirrers (and the disturbing rumors of a zombie god rising sometime soon) his problem. That time management seminar he keeps meaning to take would also remind him that he's got a Death Moot to plan, a Christmas party to organize, and an end-of-the-world thing to avert.

Steven must start managing Death, before Death starts managing him, or this time the Apocalypse will be more than Regional.

ESPIONAGE CENTRAL: ARCHER SEASON ONE!

PER C.O.B.R.A.S. AGENT TANNER OVER AT THE DOUBLE O SECTION BLOG . . .

[Archer is a] workplace comedy about a Bond-like (or, more accurately, Eurospy-like) superspy who's also a huge jerk and his dysfunctional family (some of them literally, some only figuratively) who all work at the spy agency, Archer is a show that lends itself to rewatching. It's not for all tastes, though. While the amazing Bond-inspired retro look of the FX series will appeal to Sixties spy fans, the sense of humor is more appropriate for fans of South Park or people not easily offended by the ribald.

LIKE AGENT TANNER, I THINK ARCHER IS HILARIOUS AND IN VERY, VERY BAD TASTE . . .

DEAD DWARVES DON’T DANCE

The year is 2134. The nations of previous centuries are gone, consumed by the United Globe government. Citizens are confined to vast metroplexes while the rest of Earth is restored to wilderness.

Across the squalid underbelly of the Regional Atlanta Metroplex, through the desert wasteland of the not-so-pristine wilderness, and to the peerless towers of elite society, Noose’s brutal quest for vengeance leaves a wake of destruction and death.
