BEAT TO A PULP #113: THE DEATH FANTASTIQUE!

BEAT TO A PULP #113: THE DEATH FANTASTIQUE!

JOHN HORNOR JACOBS

HERE’S A SHORT EXCERPT AND THEN THE WORD FROM BTAP EDITOR DAVID CRANMER . . .

"What's that mean?"

"What?"

"Your titty. Is that French or something?"

She smiled, weakly, and pushed a lock of hair behind her ear. Efram liked the way she looked, wary, big-eyed and delicate, like she'd spent too much time indoors when she was a girl. She had some bruising here and there, but nothing that didn't come with the business.

"Means a 'fantastic death.'"

CRANMER ~ John Hornor is one creative son-of-a-gun. He first impressed the hell out of me with his marvelous covers for Needle: A Magazine of Noir, which is why I asked him if he'd be interested in making the cover for my upcoming eBook, Adventures of Cash Laramie and Gideon Miles. His first novel, SOUTHERN GODS, will be published by Night Shade Books (August, 2011), and his other novels are on submission at various publishers.

In between designing covers and writing novels – he even found some time to come up with this week's excellent image – he submitted a first-rate, hardboiled noir, "The Death Fantastique," that begs the question, what can’t the talented Mr. Jacobs do?

VEGAS, BABY: LUCKY STIFF!

VEGAS, BABY: LUCKY STIFF!

DEBORAH COONTS

I ENJOYED THE DEBUT NOVEL IN THIS SERIES, WANNA GET LUCKY, ENOUGH TO GIVE THIS SECOND OUTING A TRY . . .

Lucky O’Toole--Head of Customer Relations at The Babylon, premier mega-resort on the Vegas Strip--thinks it’s just another night in Las Vegas. A tractor-trailer has spilled its load of a million honeybees, blocking not only the Strip but the entrance to her hotel... the District Attorney for Clark County—apparently the odd man out of a threesome on the twelfth floor—is hiding in the buff in one of the hotel’s laundry rooms... and Numbers Neidermeyer--one of Vegas’ less-than-savory oddsmakers--is arguing with Las Vegas’ ace private investigator, the Beautiful Jeremy Whitlock.

The next day, Lucky discovers Ms. Neidermeyer was tossed into the shark tank at the Mandalay Bay Resort as a snack for the Tiger Shark. When the police show up at the Babylon with a hastily prepared search warrant, applied for by the District Attorney himself, and Jeremy lands in the hot seat, Lucky realizes her previous night was far from routine.

Amid the chaos of fight weekend, the hiring of an eccentric new French chef, and her madam mother's intentions to auction off a young woman’s virginity, Lucky is drawn into a deadly game where no one is what they seem, a game that will end only when she discovers who made fish-food out of Numbers Neidermeyer.

Lucky O’Toole and Fabulous Las Vegas—life doesn’t get any better.

PETER RABE

THIS IS ANOTHER GREAT TITLE FROM STARK HOUSE, BUT I WISH THEY WOULD GET WITH THE PROGRAM AND PRODUCE E-BOOK VERSIONS FOR THOSE OF USE WHO HAVE ALMOST FULLY CONVERTED . . .

THE SILENT WALL

Matty Mathews has been to the town of Forza d Aguil before. He was stationed there with a small group of soldiers during WWII. It was here that Matty fell in love with Rosanna. It was a sweet, short-lived love because the soldiers soon got their orders to pull out before Matty could say goodbye. Now he s back in Sicily, drawn to the mountain town after all these years. But the citizens of Forza d Aguil are easy to offend, and when Matty crosses Pino, the Sicilian sabotages his leaving.

Now he's trapped in Forza d Aguil, hemmed in on all sides by the oppression of the town, its silent citizens stuck in the middle of Mafia country with no way out. He has only the help of the innkeeper Vinciguerra, and the passion of the sweet Sophia. Or could she be part of the trap?

THE RETURN OF MARVIN PALAVER

Marvin Palaver dies at the worst possible moment in life, just when he is coming out even with his nemesis, fellow scrap seller Sidney Minsk. He is so close. The contract is signed and Sydney has just bought back his own scrap, the deal of a lifetime. Marve knows happiness supreme. But as the tears of joy make his eyes swim, there comes a bump in his chest, and he is dead before he hits the floor.

But death doesn t stop Marvin. His masterful schwindel must be complete. So Marve finagles his way back to the material plane for a bit of artful ghosting. Sidney has hidden the contract away, confident that he s the only one who knows about it. All Marve needs to do is get him to reveal it he should live so long!

FORGOTTEN BOOKS: THE SINNERS

FORGOTTEN BOOKS: THE SINNERS

EDWARD S. AARONS

I’M POSTING THIS WEEK'S FORGOTTEN BOOKS POST A BIT EARLY AS I’M GOING TO BE IN A TIME CRUNCH LATER TODAY AND TOMORROW . . .

After posting up covers earlier this week from some of Edward S. Aarons’ long running Sam Durell espionage novels, I came across a copy of The Sinners, one of Aarons’ early stand-alones.

Published in 1953, The Sinners was Aarons’ fourth novel. In this outing, he dips into his knowledge of the sea – gained as a Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Coast Guard in WWII – to write an excellent if traditional Gold Medal tale of ordinary men faced with life-changing extrodinary events.

THE SINNERS

The hurricane was a dead calm compared to the violence that followed . . . the sinners

The schooner Pan had been a proud forty-foot creature of hardwood and brass and clean, white canvas. Now, torn and wounded, her foremast gone, her mahogany decks encrusted with salt and littered with debris, she limped into the quiet cove.

Her crew had suffered a sea change, too. Two men, friends since college, had set off with their wives for a basking, leisurely year's cruise of the Caribbean. But the storm had ended all of that – as if the wind itself had ripped away their masks of convention and courtesy to show them the primitive terrors and passions that only haunt the edges of our dreams.

If you enjoy Aarons’ Sam Durell novels then The Sinners is worth seeking out. From the pulps to Gold Medal Aarons cut his teeth at the typewriter pounding out taunt, tight, teriffic stories.

PULP NOW: UNIT 13!

CALVIN DANIELS / TYRELL TINNIN

FROM GRANTON CITY PRESS

While a World War rages in the trenches of Northern France, Sergeant T.S. Crake leads Unit 13, a secret elite military force, deep behind enemy lines. The diverse force follows the rumors and vague reports of diabolical medical experiments back to a small occupied village where the Germans have created something monstrous an unexpected weapon that will fundamentally change the very nature of modern warfare.

When one of their own is captured during their escape, Sgt. Crake must decide whether to risk the rest of the Unit in a daring rescue. Reuniting with the Unit's support team, they are joined by two new powerful allies and the question becomes that much more pressing. Do they return to their temporary base in England or do they follow their friend's trail into the very heart of darkness?

Crake ultimately decides he cannot leave a comrade to suffer at the hands of madmen and will risk everything to save his friend. Half the German Army and a host of other dangers stand between them and success, but they have their own secrets that may just give them the edge.

Their journey takes them halfway across Europe to the German's main medical facility hidden in the ancient Altenschatten Castle. Will they survive the treacherous road into the lion's den? And what will they find when they get there? What horrors are lurking in the shadows of Altenschatten?

PULP NOW: THE WRAITH ~ A SUPERHERO NOVEL!

PULP NOW: THE WRAITH ~ A SUPERHERO NOVEL!

THE WRAITH SERIES, BOOK 1

FRANK DIRSCHERL

In a world not far removed from our own, a city lies ravaged. Crime overruns its streets; its citizens are helpless. Crimelord Robert Latham, to the world-at-large a legitimate businessman, holds the city in his sway. Fear and intimidation rule throughout. One man stands above the rest, willing to fight for freedom.

That man is The Wraith.

The Wraith, the city’s bogeyman, is known to exist only by a very few, and seen by even fewer. Those that do know of him, especially Latham, know to fear him, for his fury at those who commit evil has no bounds. By day, the Wraith is the reclusive billionaire Paul Sanderson, a man more mysterious and less seen than his night-time counterpart. Sensing the desperation of Latham and that his own time may be limited, Sanderson readies a replacement, a man deemed worthy to continue in his stead, whether that man likes it or not. That man is Michael Reeve, an honest cop, someone similarly fighting for justice in a city where very little justice remains. It’s a struggle for Reeve to come to terms with his new identity and the destiny handed to him by someone he has only heard of but never seen.

Those around him are pulled, unwittingly and seeringly, into his nightmare. In desperation, Latham calls in someone to finish the job, to ensure Metro City finally becomes his, completely and utterly. Enter the Cobra, a creature whose origins have been lost in the mists of time. A creature whose sole purpose in life is to destroy—and conquer.

Can the new Wraith save his city even while he struggles to save his own soul?

THE ADVENTURES OF NED THE SEAL

JOE. R. LANSDALE

LANSDALE IS A TERRIFIC STORY TELLER WITH THE WILDEST IMAGINATION CAPABLE OF STILL MAKING SENSE (SOMEWHAT) AND GETTING PUBLISHED. I FIND LANSDALE AN AQUIRRED TASE, BUT ONCE YOU GET IT THERE IS NO TURNING BACK . . .

Cross-pollinating famous 19th-century fictional characters and historical figures from disparate sources, this wild, steampunk fantasy presents two consecutive tales of madcap adventure. Hilarious and unpredictable, the first section follows Wild Bill Hickock, Annie Oakley, George Custer, Sitting Bull, and Buffalo Bill Cody’s head—which is affixed to the top of a mechanical body — as they take the Wild West Show to Japan by zeppelin.

Further exploits involve Frankenstein as an aphrodisiac for a local shogun, encounters with Captain “Bemo” and his submersible, and a trip to the “island of Dr. Momo.”

The second phase of this nonstop romp—partly inscribed by a courageous young seal on his trusty notepad—accompanies Mark Twain and Jules Verne against the backdrop of a Martian invasion. Escaping the carnage on a speedboat converted into a touring balloon, the boisterous group encounters more perilous experiences in the form of an island of pirates, a steam-powered robot, a Kong-sized ape, and multiple tears in the space-time continuum.

Raucous and inventive, this dime-store pulp parody is rife with absurdist comedy while maintaining a literary scope.
