Y/A CORNER: UNCOMMON CRIMINALS!

Y/A CORNER: UNCOMMON CRIMINALS!

ALLY CARTER

HEIST SOCIETY, THE DEBUT BOOK IN THIS SERIES, WAS MY FAVORITE Y/A NOVEL OF 2010, SO I’M REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS OUTING DUE OUT IN JUNE 2011 . . .

Katarina Bishop has worn a lot of labels in her short life. Friend. Niece. Daughter. Thief. But for the last two months she’s simply been known as the girl who ran the crew that robbed the greatest museum in the world. That’s why Kat isn’t surprised when she’s asked to steal the infamous Cleopatra Emerald so it can be returned to its rightful owners.

There are only three problems. First, the gem hasn’t been seen in public in thirty years. Second, since the fall of the Egyptian empire and the suicide of Cleopatra, no one who holds the emerald keeps it for long, and in Kat’s world, history almost always repeats itself. But it’s the third problem that makes Kat’s crew the most nervous and that is simply… the emerald is cursed.

Kat might be in way over her head, but she’s not going down without a fight. After all she has her best friend—the gorgeous Hale—and the rest of her crew with her as they chase the Cleopatra around the globe, dodging curses, realizing that the same tricks and cons her family has used for centuries are useless this time.

Which means, this time, Katarina Bishop is making up her own rules.

JESSE STONE ~ INNOCENTS LOST

JESSE STONE ~ INNOCENTS LOST

PER OMNIMYSTERY NEWS:

THE 7TH JESSE STONE FILM, TO AIR ON CBS MAY 22ND

CBS has scheduled the seventh Jesse Stone film, Innocents Lost, for Sunday May 22nd, 2011, at 9 PM (ET/PT).

Based on a character created by the late Robert B. Parker, Innocents Lost is not adapted from any of Parker's novels, but is an original screenplay co-written by Tom Selleck, who plays Jesse Stone.

The plotline finds Jesse, once again on overload, looking into the death of a teenaged girl and unofficially involved in the case of a convicted murderer who he thinks may be innocent. He's also battling his familiar demons, alcohol and his ex-wife.

Kathy Baker and Kohl Sudduth reprise their roles as the Paradise Police Force. Also returning are William Devane, Stephen McHattie, Saul Rubinek and William Sadler.

Innocents Lost was filmed in Nova Scotia in late 2009. Selleck, who is now starring in the CBS crime drama Blue Bloods, has said he is eager to make an 8th movie, which he hopes to film this summer.

STUNTMAN!

STUNTMAN!

MY CAR-CRASHING, PLANE-JUMPING, BONE-BREAKING, DEATH-DEFYING HOLLYWOOD LIFE!

HAL NEEDHAM

Yep, that's me, Hal Needham, on the cover doing a fire stunt. When you're on fire you don't dare breathe because if you do, you'll suck those flames right down your throat. I was Hollywood's highest paid stuntman so I should know.

I wrecked hundreds of cars, fell from tall buildings, got blown up, was dragged by horses, and along the way broke 56 bones, my back twice, punctured a lung and knocked out a few teeth...I hung upside down by my ankles under a bi-plane in The Spirit of St. Louis, jumped between galloping horses in Little Big Man, set a world record for a boat stunt on Gator, jumped a rocket powered pick-up truck across a canal for a GM commercial, was the first human to test the car airbag-and taught John Wayne how to really throw a movie punch.

Life also got exciting outside of the movie business. I had my Ferrari stolen right from under my nose, flew in a twin-engine Cessna with a passed out pilot, rescued the cast and crew from a Russian invasion in Czechoslovakia, and once took six flight attendants on a date. I owned the Skoal-Bandit NASCAR race team, the sound-barrier breaking Budweiser Rocket Car and drove a souped-up, fake ambulance in a "little" cross-country race called The Cannonball Run, which became the movie I directed by the same name. Oh yeah, I also directed Smokey and the Bandit, Hooper and several other action/comedy movies that I liked a bunch.

I was a sharecropper's son from the hills of Arkansas who became a Hollywood stuntman. That journey was a tough row to hoe. I continually risked my life but that was the career I chose. I was never late to the set and did whatever I had to do to get the job done.

Hollywood's not all sunglasses and autographs. Let me tell you a few stories...

FORGOTTEN BOOKS: BLOOD ON FRISCO BAY!

FORGOTTEN BOOKS: BLOOD ON FRISCO BAY!

JAY FLYNN

I'm not sure why this book has been in the back of my mind for a few weeks, perhaps because of my earlier  post on Blood On Biscayne Bay (one of my favorite titles), clearly as ripped off for this book as so much else . . .

In the category of books so bad they’re good, Blood On Frisco Bay would have a chance at making the top ten. This 1976 Dirty Harry rip-off was an end of career offering from the typewriter and alcohol soaked mind of author Jay Flynn.

Blood was published by Leisure Books, whose titles – along with those from Belmont-Towers – would heavily populate the top ten of the aforementioned list. Still, there was something alluring about the titles produced by these publishers and there was always a few gems amongst the dross. Blood On Frisco Bay is not one of them – not by a long shot.

Flynn’s career as a fiction writer did have some high points including five titles featuring San Francisco bar owner and secret agent, McHugh. Flynn also wrote a couple of solid caper novels – Terror Tournament and Action Man, both of which are worth reading.

However, Flynn had more than a few missteps and by the time he got around to pounding out Blood On Frisco Bay and it’s precursor, Trouble Is My Business – another title rip-off, this time from Chandler – he was having trouble putting one word in front of another, producing books so bad they could be used as examples of how not to get published.

Blood On Frisco Bay gives us the dubious character of SFPD Sgt. Joe Riggs. Along with his ‘partner,’ an Irish wolfhound named Croc, a foot-long Bowie knife, and a Walther sidearm, Riggs patrols San Francisco in a station wagon, dealing out justice as only he sees fit. He doesn’t seem to have any leash on him at all, never answering for his tactics in any form of reality. There is an abundance of foul-mouthed posturing, salacious violence, and a complete lack of plot as Riggs searches for the killer of a San Francisco socialite.

I’ve kept the book for the pulpish cover art and because Blood On Frisco Bay can make anyone feel better about their own literary efforts.

WESTERN PULP: ADAM STEELE!

WESTERN PULP: ADAM STEELE!

GARY DOBBS HAS ANOTHER COOL WESTERN ICON POST TODAY ON HIS TAINTED ARCHIVE BLOG, THIS TIME FOCUSING ON ADAM STEELE – ANOTHER CHARACTER FROM THE TYPEWRITER OF EDGE CREATOR GEORGE G. GILMAN (TERRY HARKNETT) . . .

The character of Adam Steele was, by any standards, a resounding success - 49 books in the series proper and the character also appeared in three books alongside that other western icon, Edge. Indeed it is the character of Edge that takes the sheen off Steele. Both characters were created by British writer, Terry Harknett under his George G. Gilman name, but Edge was such a true phenomenon that Adam Steele is not exactly perceived as the success he was. Back in the day the Steele books sold well but the Edge books flew from the shelves. Still 49 books is a pretty good run by any standards.

I must admit that as a teenage reader, the Edge series was my favourite and, although I tried the odd Steele (they did come from the same pen, after all). But the books seemed to me not as good as Edge and for many years I didn't read Steele. It was only later, after reading all the Edge titles, that I went back to Steele and, although I still think the Edge series is something else, I found Steele a great series. In fact these days I'm much more appreciative of Steele than ever - the books are rightly considered classics of the western genre.

There are those who actually prefer the Steele series to Edge . . .
