FORGOTTEN BOOKS: GOODEY’S LAST STAND!

FORGOTTEN BOOKS: GOODEY’S LAST STAND!

CHARLES ALVERSON

"I was right, wasn't I, Joe? You should have been a private dick all the time. You're a natural. Here you've had a private op's license a full six hours or so, and you're working overtime finding dead bodies, disappearing potential murderers and witnesses, bumping heads with detective sergeants all over the place. You've got the knack, boy." – Goodey's Last Stand

Joe Goodey is a star San Francisco homicide detective working until he mistakes the mayor’s cousin for a gunman and shoots him. In short order, Goodey is forced to resign and run out of town. It’s indicated that once things cools down, he might be able to return as a private ticket.

However, no sooner than you can say plot twist, a North Beach stripper with the mayor’s name in her little black book is murdered, and Goodey finds his private eye license expedited – he’s back in town with fall guy written all over him.

Goodey survives his last stand in order to work a second case in Not Sleeping, Just Dead, when he is hired to investigate the mysterious death of a young woman at a Big Sur commune/rehab clinic called The Institute.

Author Alverson’s screen writing involvement with Terry Gilliam’s stylized films Brazil and Jabberwocky should give you some idea of the anachronistic time displacement displayed by the down on his luck Goodey. Goodey’s Last Stand was published in the mid-seventies and set in the then modern era. However, Goodey is less enlightened toward women and minorities than Mike Hammer in his heyday, making his exploits a homage to the genre’s worst attributes.

Still, despite his throwback attitudes, Goodey is an entertaining wise-cracker who goes through his knight in tarnished armor routine in serviceable tradition. Set in Chinatown and San Francisco’s red light district, Goodey’s Last Stand is strong with mood and ambience, but never rises above mediocre storytelling.

PEG HERRING

Young secretary Tori Van Camp wakes one morning on a luxurious ocean liner where she is offered whatever a person might desire: food, clothes, recreation, and the companionship of congenial people. But Tori has no memory of booking a cruise. What she does have is a vivid recollection of being shot point blank in the chest.

With the help of the stunningly handsome Mike and the unnervingly serene Nancy, Tori soon learns the purpose of her voyage. Still, she is haunted by the image of the gun, the crack of the shot, and the malevolent face of the shooter. Who wanted her dead, and why?

Determined to find out, Tori enlists the help of Seamus, an eccentric but shrewd detective. Together they embark on an investigation unlike anything Tori ever thought possible. Death is all around, the future is uncertain, and if Tori does not act quickly, two people she cares about are prime candidates for murder.

RAT PACK CENTRAL: FRANK SINATRA MONTEGRAPPA PENS!

RAT PACK CENTRAL: FRANK SINATRA MONTEGRAPPA PENS!

MONTEGRAPPA PAYS TRIBUTE TO THE LEGENDARY FRANK SINATRA

LOS ANGELES (MARCH 22, 2011) - Montegrappa, Italy’s most revered manufacturer of fine writing instruments, today announced the debut of several new commemorative pens honoring Frank Sinatra during Baselworld, the world's largest and most important event in the watch and jewelry sector held annually in Basel, Switzerland, this year from March 24 to March 31. The pens will be part of Montegrappa’s popular “Icons” series of writing instruments, which pays tribute to global cultural icons, who have achieved greatness in a variety of fields, including music, movies and sports. Previously released pens in the “Icons” series have honored Muhammad Ali and Bruce Lee.

To pay tribute to Frank Sinatra, Montegrappa has fashioned pens that, from cap to tip, are imbued with several distinctive elements that signify Sinatra’s remarkable life and career. At the working end, the tip of each pen bears a musical staff and a G-clef. The barrels and caps of each pen are finished to resemble the fabric of a sharp pin-striped suit, while the ends of each cap are engraved with the fedora logo used today by Frank Sinatra Enterprises to identify authorized Sinatra items and suggestive of the signature style of hat that Sinatra wore and made famous. The fountain pen models in the series have blue accents in a nod to “Ol’ Blue Eyes,” while the roller ball models bear orange accents reflective of Sinatra’s favorite color. The pocket clips for each pen are carved in the shape of a classic microphone.

Montegrappa will issue the following models of Frank Sinatra-themed pens: 1,915 fountain pens and 1,915 roller balls, each in resin with silver trim, to honor the year Frank Sinatra was born (1915); an additional 12 fountain pens and 12 roller balls, each in resin with solid 18K gold trim, to denote Sinatra’s birthday on December 12th; and finally, 5 roller balls and 13 fountain pens, each with solid 18K gold trim and overlaid barrel, to recognize the date that the United States Congress designated “Frank Sinatra Day” in honor of his significant contributions to American culture. The Sinatra writing instruments collection will be sold to boutiques and approved Montegrappa dealers.
