TODAY’S FIND . . . SHERLOCK HOLMES!

DEAR, MR. HOLMES ~ $2.99

SEVEN HOLMES ON THE RANGE MYSTERIES

STEVE HOCKENSMITH

Big Red and Old Red Amlingmeyer have starred in five "Holmes on the Range" novels, rustling up award nominations and fans aplenty as they cracked mysteries using the methods of their hero, Sherlock Holmes. How did these Old West drifters first discover Holmes, though? What were they doing before their novel adventures began? And how did their early, awkward stabs at "deducifying" turn out? These seven short stories provide the answers.

In "Dear Mr. Holmes," Old Red first gets the itch to turn detective -- and just in time, too, because a killer's stalking him and his brother along a Kansas cattle trail. In "Gustav Amlingmeyer, Holmes of the Range," Old Red's attempt to settle down and open his own "cafay" goes haywire when one of the customers gets a side order of arsenic with his steak and potatoes. In "Wolves in Winter," Big Red and Old Red go up against deadly predators of both the two- and four-legged variety. And the adventure continues in four more stories (most of them originally published in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine).

Critics have called Steve Hockensmith's "Holmes on the Range" tales "hilarious" (Entertainment Weekly), "quirky and original" (The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette), "clever" (The New York Times), "wonderfully entertaining" (Booklist) and "a hoot" (The Washington Post). There's only one way to find out if you agree. Order your copy today!

Y/A CORNER: ROTTERS!

Y/A CORNER: ROTTERS!

DANIEL KRAUS

Grave-robbing. What kind of monster would do such a thing? It's true that Leonardo da Vinci did it, Shakespeare wrote about it, and the resurrection men of nineteenth-century Scotland practically made it an art. But none of this matters to Joey Crouch, a sixteen-year-old straight-A student living in Chicago with his single mom. For the most part, Joey's life is about playing the trumpet and avoiding the daily humiliations of high school.

Everything changes when Joey's mother dies in a tragic accident and he is sent to rural Iowa to live with the father he has never known, a strange, solitary man with unimaginable secrets. At first, Joey's father wants nothing to do with him, but once father and son come to terms with each other, Joey's life takes a turn both macabre and exhilarating.

Daniel Kraus's masterful plotting and unforgettable characters make Rotters a moving, terrifying, and unconventional epic about fathers and sons, complex family ties, taboos, and the ever-present specter of mortality.

PULP NOW: TARZAN ~ THE GREYSTOKE LEGACY

COMING IN JUNE!

2012 sees the centennial anniversary of the publication of Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs. As part of the run-up to this milestone, Andy Briggs has been writing a new series of Tarzan books, the first of which, Tarzan: the Legacy of Greystoke, is due to be published in June 2011 by Faber / Faber.

Set in modern Africa, Tarzan: The Greystoke Legacy follows a re-imagined Tarzan who is edgier, untamed and feral while remaining the iconic hero, raised by apes and protector of the wild. Among the 21st-century difficulties the new Tarzan will face: warring guerrillas, poaching of endangered animals, illegal logging and the decline of the environment. The story's original characters will appear in slightly different form: Jane is a 14-year-old girl accustomed to technology, Robert Canler is a runaway with a mysterious past, and cannibal tribes are replaced by rebel guerrillas.

What lies in the depths of the jungle? Escaping a dark secret, Robbie Canler joins an illegal logging team in the Congo jungle. Now they"re under siege from a sinister force. When the daughter of the camp's boss, Jane Porter, goes missing they assume bloodthirsty rebel soldiers have kidnapped her. Robbie sets out on a rescue mission - unaware he is being watched...Are the rumours of a feral man raised by wild apes true? If so, can the mysterious untamed savage be trusted to help them?

AUDIO DRAMA CORNER: THE UNEXPECTED VOLUME 1!

NOW AVAILABLE FROM RADIO ARCHIVES!

Fifty years from now, should some intrepid archaeologist happen to come across a stack of radio and movie scripts from the postwar years, he or she is bound to end up with an interesting take on our culture. It's likely, in fact, that American society circa 1947 will be interpreted as paranoid, suspicious, and steeped in fear and dread.

It won't be a true assessment, of course, but if you were to see our culture strictly through the eyes of popular entertainment of the time, it would be easy to understand why someone might believe it. Many of the more popular movies were certainly dark - film noir classics that stressed fear and an ever-present undercurrent of dread and uncertainty. Radio, too, gave us its share of paranoia, with the Shadow clouding men's minds and the Whistler "knowing the nameless terrors of which they dare not speak". And if, in that pile of crumbling paper, that archaeologist happens upon scripts for a little-known radio series titled "The Unexpected", his or her impression of a society in psychological crisis would be even more certain.

"The Unexpected" was a quarter-hour radio series produced by Hamilton-Whitney Productions. Like many syndicated shows of the time, the series chose its stars from the rank and file of both radio and motion pictures. Unlike big-time network dramatic shows, of course, Hamilton-Whitney couldn't afford the price tags attached to "A" list celebrities - but this actually proved beneficial, since busy character actors like Barry Sullivan, Jack Holt, and Marsha Hunt were used to playing a multitude of parts with little preparation and performers like Lurene Tuttle, who specialized in radio, could credibly play most any part after one or two read-thrus. The budgets may have been small but, thanks to experienced hands both before and behind the microphone, the results were impressive.

Then as now, every show that wished to be successful had to have some sort of a hook - a gimmick, if you will - that differentiated it from the rest of the pack. In the case of "The Unexpected", the series specialized in tense stories of mystery and suspense, usually centering on the thoughts or actions of a single person. A husband loses patience with his nattering wife and decides to do away with her; an ex-con finds himself blackmailed by a fellow inmate; a self-centered debutante carefully plans her break-up with her fiancé - all were simple but engaging plots for this enterprising series. But the fascinating thing about the shows, the "hook" which was designed to attract and retain the interest of listeners, was the twist ending that came with each program. You'd be listening along to the story and then, just about the time the plot was being resolved, the program's announcer would say "You think the story is over, don't you? But wait! Fate takes a hand. Wait...for the unexpected!" Well, after that, what could a poor listener do but sit thru the commercial that followed to find out the REAL ending to the tale?

For mystery fans, "The Unexpected" is a real discovery - and it's a show that that even the most avid of radio buffs has never even heard of, let alone heard. Radio Archives is excited to bring this series back for the enjoyment of a whole new generation of listeners. Transferred directly from original transcription recordings and fully restored for sparkling audio fidelity, "The Unexpected" is a series we know you'll find as fascinating and entertaining as we do. This 5-CD collection, now available for just $14.95 from RadioArchives.com, offers you the first twenty shows in the series, with such additional guest stars as Tom Neal, Lyle Talbot, Binnie Barnes, and Jackie Cooper.

RADIO ARCHIVES ANNOUNCES PULP AUDIOBOOK SERIES

NEW AUDIO PRODUCTION DIVISION WILL DO DOC SAVAGE, THE SPIDER, AND SECRET AGENT "X"

Radio Archives today announced a new series of audiobooks, based on favorite pulp novels of the 1930s and 1940s. The audiobooks will begin Radio Archives' new line of original audio productions based on classic pulp fiction.

The first series of audiobooks will be the seven Doc Savage novels penned by pulp author and Doc Savage authority Will Murray, featuring cover art by Joe DeVito. Future series will include the exploits of pulp heroes The Spider and Secret Agent "X", as well as other pulp fiction properties. The new audio productions will utilize the talents of some of the top voice actors and recording talents in the United States. The first audiobook release is scheduled for June 2011.

"We're thrilled to have Will Murray's excellent Doc Savage novels as the lead-off offerings in this exciting new series," said Harlan Zinck, president of Radio Archives. "The audiobooks and other new audio productions will nicely complement our classic radio and pulp reprint offerings."

Murray's Doc Savage stories were published in the 1990's and were the first new Doc Savage stories in more than 40 years. "Creating audiobooks of these extensions of the Doc Savage canon brings a new dimension to this classic pulp character," Murray said.

The new audiobook line, which will be recorded and released in digital stereo, will be produced and directed by audio producer Roger Rittner, who created The Adventures of Doc Savage full-cast radio series, available in a deluxe CD set from Radio Archives. "I'm delighted to be able to bring the superb quality of Radio Archives productions to these exciting stories," said Rittner, who has a 30-year history of both recorded and live classic radio and audio productions.

FORGOTTEN BOOKS: NIGHT JUDGEMENT AT SINOS!

FORGOTTEN BOOKS: NIGHT JUDGEMENT AT SINOS!

JACK HIGGINS

This 1970 outing from high adventure master Jack Higgins is a gem, filled with all the action, world weary heroes, impossible odds, and ratcheting suspense that make Higgins a delight.

NIGHT JUDGEMENT AT SINOS

The island of Sinos. Strategically positioned between Greece and Turkey, this small Mediterranean isle is a relic of the past – an old Turkish stronghold fortified by the Nazis during World War II. Now it has become a prison for political offenders from the Greek mainland.

A fortress of grim solitude and secrets, Sinos is the last place anyone would voluntarily enter, but deep sea diver Jack Savage has little choice. After losing his boat in a suspicious explosion, Savage is approached by shipping magnate Dimitri Aleko. The multi-millionaire has taken an extreme interest in Savage's background as a Royal Marine Commando and his expertise in underwater sabotage.

Aleko also has a job for Savage: masterminding the ultimate breakout – for on the prison island of Sinos, one man holds the fate of thousands in his hands.

And Jack Savage is the key to unlocking that fate.

Night Judgement At Sinos is middle career Higgins, when his storytelling powers were approaching their zenith while still maintaining the stylistic starkness of a hungry writer knowing he’s headed for the top of the heap.

If you’ve never read Higgins before, Night Judgement At Sinos (despite the clunky title) is a good place to start . . .
