HARDBOILED COLLECTIVE: THE TRUMAN SMITH PRIVATE EYE SERIES!

HARDBOILED COLLECTIVE: THE TRUMAN SMITH PRIVATE EYE SERIES!

BILL CRIDER

Bill Crider has been a friend of many years, but I’d buy his books even if I didn’t know him and he was twisting my arm. A trio of his Truman Smith private eye novels have just been released in the ever more popular e-book format, and they are as much a delight in electronic form as they were in their original paper incarnation . . . the laconic Texan, ‘Tru’ Smith, is a keeper . . . $2.99 each for your Kindle or Nook . . .

GATOR KILL

After he failed to find his missing sister, whose remains finally turned up in a bag in an overgrown field, Texas PI Truman Smith retired to become a housepainter on Galveston Island. But when an alligator is killed and its carcass left on display on a family friend's property, Tru is persuaded to search for the culprit. Soon the brooding gumshoe is stumbling over the bodies of dead humans, is shot at and run down by a souped-up four-by-four as he's embroiled in a plot complete with crooked police, a possible land-grabbing sheme and assorted "bad guys."

DEAD ON THE ISLAND

PI Truman Smith has become a loner after failing to find his sister Jan during a recent search of Galveston Island. He jogs on the Seawall, plays with his cat, and reads lots of Faulkner books. He is pulled from his self-imposed retirement when his old high school football buddy Dino asks him to find a young girl named Sharon. As Tru begins his investigation, dead bodies begin to appear and Tru himself is attacked. His search for Sharon takes him to all sorts of interesting places on and near the Island. Bill Crider spins a good mystery tale in a wonderful setting with interesting characters and enough plot twists to keep readers guessing until the last few chapters.

WHEN OLD MEN DIE

Truman "Tru" Smith is a PI who'd rather be reading Faulkner or fishing on his beloved Galveston Island than solving mysteries, so when his friend Dino asks for help, Tru at first demurs. With some not-very-subtle arm twisting, Dino finally persuades Tru to investigate the disappearance of Old Harry, a homeless vagrant whom Dino and his family have "adopted." Tru makes some half-hearted efforts to find the old geezer--who Tru figures probably disappeared because he felt like it--but only succeeds in getting shot at, doused in the Gulf, and bopped on the head. Of course, these events not only make Tru cross, they also rouse his suspicions about why somebody is so determined to keep him from finding out the real reasons for Old Harry's disappearance. It's not long before Tru discovers that some very nasty business is going on--business that isn'tin the best interests of Tru's island.

HARDBOILED CORNER: JOE HANNIBAL ~ GOSHEN HOLE!

WAYNE DUNDEE

JOE HANNIBAL IS BACK! WAYNE D. DUNDEE'S SIGNATURE PI IS OFF AND RUNNING IN HIS SEVENTH INVESTIGATION . . .
GOSHEN HOLE . . .

She’d always been a wild one—a tramp or runaround, she would've been called back in the day. But my pal, B.U. Gorcey, didn’t see it back when he married her and probably would've punched anybody if they’d tried to tell him. When you fall for a gal as hard as he did for Linda, you’re blind to a lot of things.

The marriage turned out to be a train wreck. B.U. was busting his ass to make a name for himself on the rodeo circuit. And while he was chasing around the country getting his innards pounded and his brains scrambled trying to stay on bulls and bucking broncs, Linda was doing her own share of hard riding—on every stud who passed through town.

"So why, then, after all that, do you still care anything about her?" I asked him.

He lifted his eyes and probed into mine. "I’m not saying I care for her. Those feelings are long gone. Dead. But all the same ... she’s still my daughter’s mother." That daughter, Patty, was the only decent thing to come out of the whole mess. Somehow, she managed to grow up pretty damned fine in spite of the rest of it.

"It would sadden me," he continued, "if anything bad happened to her."

"Do you think something bad has happened to her?"

"Patty’s got herself worked up to thinkin’ something might have. Reckon she’s got me feelin’ edgy about it, too. Linda’s always had this wild streak, especially when it comes to men. God knows how many different ones since the divorce." Bitterness cutting into his voice, he added, "Not to mention how many before ... but what I’m gettin' at is, some of the guys she takes up with are pretty bad actors. Rough, ornery types. In recent years, she seems to be drawn more and more to that kind. The kind who wouldn’t hesitate to drag her into the middle of some kind of nastiness or danger right along with themselves."

"Something nasty, dangerous ... and possibly illegal?"

He met my eyes again. "Anything’s possible."

"How long has she been missing?"

"About a week. Since sometime over last weekend, near as we can figure. Patty lives and works in Fort Collins, Colorado. Linda’s up in Cheyenne. They talk on the phone, get together for holidays, sometimes shoppin' or to go to a movie. Like that."

B.U. lit another cigarette. "They spent part of the past Labor Day weekend together. It was the last time Patty saw her, although they did speak on the phone a few times afterwards. But when Patty tried callin' her ma last week she got no answer or call-back and then the same thing when she tried two or three more times. By last Saturday, Patty was worried enough to drive up to Cheyenne. But she couldn't find hide nor hair of her ma. Not at home, not at any of her usual haunts. None of her friends or neighbors could remember seeing her or hearing from her since sometime in the middle of the week. At that joint where Linda works, Patty found out she'd put in her hours the previous Thursday night, had Friday and Saturday off, was scheduled again for Sunday. But when Sunday rolled around Linda was a no-show and never bothered to call in. Same thing on Monday. Linda ain't showin' up at work and ain't showin' up nowhere else either."

"Maybe she’s off on some kind of getaway with a new boyfriend."

"Wouldn’t be the first time for that. But not without leavin' some kind of word so Patty wouldn’t get worried," B.U. said. "Patty’s met you. She’s heard me talk about you, about you bein' a private eye and all."

"Used to be a private eye," I said.

"You still got a license, don't you? So. Whatya think, hoss?" he said.

It really wasn’t something that required a lot of contemplation. "I think," I said, "that I’ll need a few more details out of you and then a little while to button up some things around here. Once those are taken care of, I figure I can probably make Cheyenne yet this evening...."

ESPIONAGE CENTRAL: THE EQUALIZER!

ESPIONAGE CENTRAL: THE EQUALIZER!

The return of the '80s Equalizer will have to go a long way to live up to the original series with Edward Woodward as the unflappable Robert McCall who elevated the show simply by the gravitas of his presence . . . The Equalizer was the man everyone wanted on their side . . .

PER VARIETY . . .

Sony Pictures Entertainment and Escape Artists are developing a bigscreen adaptation of 1980s television series "The Equalizer" with Denzel Washington attached to star.

Move comes as Escape Artists renewed its first-look pact with Sony for an additional three years, keeping the independent television and film shingle on the studio lot through 2015.

"Equalizer," to be penned by Richard Wenk, revolves around a former secret agent who offers his investigative services in order to atone for his past sins. Series originally ran on CBS from 1985-89.

FIGHT FICTION: REVIEW ~ SUCKERPUNCH!

FIGHT FICTION: REVIEW ~ SUCKERPUNCH!

JEREMY BROWN

The White Knuckle Action Novel Of The Year!

Suckerpunch, Jeremy Brown’s outstanding debut novel, is a visceral thrill-ride through the world of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). His character, Aaron ‘Woodshed’ Wallace, is as tough as they come – an MMA fighter with more heart than sense, but a man you would always choose to cover your back. He’s trying to change, trying to overcome the harsh life and mistakes in his past, and is well aware he is often his own worst enemy. But he also knows two other things; he can fight, and he can win...

In Suckerpunch, Brown provides a no-holds-barred, straight-ahead action tale. His prose is as stripped down and powerful as the fighters and situations he writes about. Things go from bad to worse, and then much worse, for Woodshed as Brown tells his tale, before he provides the much anticipated fight and follow-up for the readers’ satisfaction.

There were times I found myself wondering how Brown, the writer, was going to get Woodshed, the fighter, out of the incredibly dangerous corners into which he’d been painted. With as many action novels as I’ve read, this was an unusual occurrence – and I enjoyed every agonizing second of it. But the best part was Brown didn’t falter or crush my ‘suspension of disbelief’ as his plot unfolded toward its resolution.

Suckerpunch is not just an excellent debut novel, it’s an excellent novel period. I’m certainly going to be rooting for both Brown and Woodshed when round two is published in 2012.

INTERVIEW: KINDLE AUTHOR BLOG!

I'M SPOUTING OFF AND FLAPPING MY GUMS ABOUT FIGHT CARD AGAIN. . . THIS TIME OVER AT DAVID WISEHART'S POPULAR KINDLE AUTHOR BLOG . . .

Paul Bishop, author of Felony Fists, discusses his book, his journey as a writer, and self-publishing on Kindle.

DAVID WISEHART: What can you tell us about Felony Fists?

PAUL BISHOP: Felony Fists is set in 1954 Los Angeles. Cop/boxer ‘Felony’ Flynn finds himself facing heavyweight contender Solomon King, a fighter owned by mobster Mickey Cohen. Flynn’s orders from legendary LAPD Chief William Parker—knockout King and stop Cohen from taking over the west coast fight rackets.

Felony Fists is the one of two debut books in the Fight Card series created by myself and prolific writer Mel Odom. The Cutman, written by Mel, debuted on Kindle alongside Felony Fists. The books are being published under the unifying pseudonym Jack Tunney.

Fight Card books are 25,000 word novelettes, designed to be read in one or two sittings, inspired by the fight pulps of the '30s and '40s—such as Fight Stories Magazine—and Robert E. Howard’s two-fisted boxing tales featuring Sailor Steve Costigan.

In December, Fight Card will feature a terrific noir tale, Split Decision, by Eric Beetner. 2012 will see books from Gary Phillips (Bare Knuckles), Bob Randisi (The Knockout), Wayne Dundee, and others—along with more from Mel and myself.

DAVID WISEHART: How do you develop and differentiate your characters?

PAUL BISHOP: I live with characters in my head all day every day. Inevitably, one of them will become fully formed and begin putting me under pressure to tell their story. I then start putting words on paper and see where the character takes me . . .

THE TWO-FISTED BLOGGER REVIEWS FELONY FISTS!

THANKS TO HANK BROWN, THE TWO-FISTED BLOGGER, FOR HIS INSIGHTFUL REVIEW OF FELONY FISTS . . .

So far as I know, it's been quite a while since fiction like this has been available, and I'm pretty stoked that it's making a comeback.

Felony Fists is an installment in the new pulp Fight Card series by "Jack Tunney." For you armchair fight historians out there, that nome de plume is exactly what you suspect it is--a fusion between Jack Dempsey and Gene Tunney, though the series takes place in the '50s, not the '20s.

Patrick "Felony" Flynn is an LA beat cop who is also possibly the world's most seasoned amateur middleweight. He's offered a spot on the detective squad if he'll help knock gangster Mickey Cohen out of boxing. That means he has to move up in weight to light-heavy, turn pro, and check Cohen's fighter Solomon King's ascent toward a title shot against Archie Moore (who really was light-heavyweight champ at that time, and quite an extraordinary man). A middleweight moving up to fight a badass light-heavyweight is a monumental chore all by itself, but in case the reader doesn't appreciate that, the pressure is heaped upon Felony Flynn increasingly right up until the last chapter.
